I know it definitely isn't the game (whoever said Bayonetta was probably right), but that face seriously reminds me of a non-SNES version of the the rock faces floating around as you walk across the Gaia stone in Terranigma, just before the final boss battle. It also looks a tiny bit like the face on Dark Gaia himself in his first form, although seeing as that's tiny you can't really see.

I got it! It's definitely not the first one (it was on the NES). This game was on the SNES and by looking at the interface, I deduce that it is "Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest". (Please someone else post a picture if I don't post one in my next post.)

Well, it's the sequel - you're 90% of the way there. The visuals (and combat system) are pretty different in the two games, though. I much prefer number two, actually, it's one of the few sequels to any game that you can truly say is a massive improvement on the first.
