I just finished reading Stephen Kings's book Misery and I was totally blown away. He is an amazing author, and I can't wait to read more of his books. So, Newgrounds, do any of you actually read? Particularly King's books? What are your favorites?

I usually tend to not read mainstream authors. (J.K. , Steven King, Tolkien)

Dean Koontz, Alan Troop, and Bob Eggleton is what I enjoy.

Salem's Lot. It's actually the only SK book I've ever finished.

I immediately thought "just kidding" for J.K., lol. Non-mainstream authors tend to have good stuff. Still, mainstream can be really good. Same goes for music.

This is the second time I've been asked if I read.

YES!

That is a great book by the way, stay away from Dreamcatcher.

I suggest you read The dark materials trilogy, by Philip Pullman

Misery's awesome, did an essay on it.

Good stuff to work on, most of the other folks did shitty £2 books from the library.

I've read The Tommyknockers, Firestarter and Four Past Midnight.

If I were to compare King's writing style to another other it would be Tolkein, as in there's an exciting bit here and there, but most of it seems drawn out, like WAY drawn out. I mean like 'cut out 400 pages and still get the same story' drawn out.

Still good reads, mind.

He has some really good stuff, but I can't get through "Wizzard and Glass", it's too slow in the part I'm at.

"Through the Eyes of the Dragon" is probably my fave so far.

While I'm at it, what do you think of Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, LotR, and other mainstream series?

Who hasn't read or seen Misery? I mean, come on. It's become a cult classic.

I'd rather die a Wolf fighting against the Herder, than die a Sheep heading for the slaughter.

I'm reading the gunslinger by Stephen King right now. It's book 1 of the dark tower series. I haven't continued it in a couple weeks, im at the end of the first volume. It's very strange but also captivating. Lost cretors Damon Lindelof and JJ Abrams are said to be making a film version of the 7 dark tower books.

personally I think the most impressive thing about steven king books is that they are all installments in the Dark Tower series. Even the ones that are in no way related to the main storyline and are not billed as having any connection constantly allude to the Dark Tower and its characters. Like in the book Insomnia that was a story outside of the dark tower story arc that didnt mention anything to do with the dark tower until right at the end, when it is revealed that everything that happened in Insomnia was a small piece of the Dark Tower puzzle. The man's got literary skills.

King is amongst one of my favorite authors. Though I've never read misery, I of course really want to at some point. So far I've read his Dark Tower series, which is amazing. Salem's lot, which I enjoyed a lot and Thinner, which wasn't bad.

I have dreamcatcher and Different seasons by him that I'm going to read sometime in the future, I have to take frequent breaks from reading his stuff though, something about his writing style and voice just seem so heavily prententious.

It's called Cell everywhere, but it's a bit too much like The Stand without the optimism.

I read a book everyonce and a while. Mostly when I have to for school, but I did read it From a Buick 8 on my own time. It's a fantastic book by Stephen King.

Misery is probably my favourite King novel. Although people ask me about the more violent sections, it's the psychological terror that gts me in Misery, especially when the main character finally gets to exploring the house while Annie is away. I actually enjoyed the ending too, which is sometimes a rarity for me.

I've also read The Shining, Carrie and It. The Shining is good, though it might not provide thrills anymore. A lot of the time, you can see everything coming, though some bits are pretty eye-opening, particularly the bath lady. Carrie is good for a shorter read, and a different approach. A lot of it is told in the past tense, through fictional newspapers, and so you learn different parts of the story as you move along.

The only problem with It is it's sometimes excessive length. Otherwise, I thought it was a great horror story. It's driven by character development, which happens to be excellent. I should buy another of King's at some point. I want to buy Rage, but it's harder to buy nowadays due to Columbine and other shootings in schools.
