It looks like crap because NG compresses when an image isnt a gif or jpg, bigger than 150kb and exceeds 559 by 700 pixels. Cool up close in real life but a pic hardly qualifys as a representation of the real thing.

I'm not sure exactly what they are though, i heard they were something like light reflecting off polar ice caps or something, but i don't see how that would make a green light in the sky looking like a trippy plain trail :P
