Cell Phones and Driving 2008-03-04 18:45:14 Reply

Ok, I'm guess most of you know that there are restrictions on cell phone use while driving in some states and countries. What do you guys think about it. I could care less really since i barely use a cell phone as it is and bad drivers are bad drivers with or without a cell phone(although if they ban it for teens they might as well ban it for the whole lot since whoever talks on a cell phone while driving probably isn't any better than a teenager driving anyhow). I do think they should allow those hands-free headset things or things of that nature, though.

This might help you check to see if it is legal where you live.

Good drivers also become bad... when they're talking on a cell.
I fucking HATE talk-drivers because I a pedestrian and there had been a few moments when I've seen them almost hit people.

Last week while I was walking out of the mall, a guy was backing out of his parking space. He was talking on his cell phone and he came out very fast... Had I reacted on time and jump out of the way while yelling, smacking on his trunk, surely he would have slowly plaster me down.

He was more angry that I smacked his trunk very hard than I was mad when he almost ran me over...

I could shoot every single one of those mother fuckers, especially those bitchy teenagers who just got their license and are pretending to be god behind the wheel while talking to their friend in the car ahead of them. Makes me sick.

Not really. Since driving skill exists in a continuum, there will be drivers in the transition phase where a cell phone is enough to turn them from a proper driver into a shit driver.

It's all about the Bluetooth.

If you don't have a Bluetooth headset yet, you're not snazzy like me and David Beckham.

You're still not concentrating fully on what you are doing, regardless if you have to use your hands or not.

That's what I thought, but the government and stuff think that this is ok and cars are being manufactured with this in mind.

Surely it's what you're thinking about rather than what you're doing with your hands.

I read somewhere that cell phone use does not impair driving skills, provided that a headset is used to allow both hands to work the car and that the conversation is a casual one.

When you use a headset, it's much like talking to your passenger. When the conversation requires deep thought (ex. math problems), that will distract you.

In short, don't let phone use limit you to one hand, and keep any conversation casual.

I wonder then why you can get a ticket for driving with a cellphone to your ear, yet hands-free car phones and so forth are ok. Apparently the risk isn't increased, or the risk is not increased nearly as much as it is when you use a conventional cell phone. I'm sure that using a headset or hands-free set isn't more distracting than say... talking to a passenger or listening to and changing radio stations/music tracks etc...

Plus, as I said, it's Bluetooth headsets are ultra-snazzy.

I prefer evolution based policies.

There are no restrictions of what you can do while you are driving. But... if you do cause an accident out of being distracted, You get the death penalty, and your assets go straight to the victim. [Atleast enough to cover their medical procedures, or their funeral if you killed them]

And then after 10-25 years of executions and car crashes people will smarten up about it.

They are, but I don't like keeping mine in 24/7... Did you know that the major designers are getting into bluetooth now? Citizen and... Prada. Such strange business for Prada.

I saw the biggest, ugliest olive-green SUV ever. It was like a box on wheels. It had, among others, a bumper sticker that said "Guns don't kill people. Drivers with cell phones kill people."

And then, the SUV swerved around in front of our car, turned a corner without any warning, and almost caused a multi-vehicle crash.

That's life.

yea cell phones can be dangerous when driving, but so can just about everything else. one day i was driving 45 in the summer, was paying attention, and a fucking deer came out and hit me. It doesn't matter wat u do, if you're gonna get in an accident than you're gonna get in an accident.

Just sounds like further proof that law enforcement personnel and lawmakers are idiots.

Driving is something that should be taken very seriously, as there are severe risks involved, not only for yourself but others around you. ANY sort of potentially-distracting activity should be highly avoided.

Plus, as I said, it's Bluetooth headsets are ultra-snazzy.

I can't argue with you on this one. =D

I believe in the headset rule, also. People who hold their hand to their head often block a big part of their vision, or they're too fucking stupid to multi task like that. I'm competent talking on the phone when I drive, but I always use a headset because I have respect for other people, and I know that you can get distracted by the stupid "hold to head" thing.
