The problem is, I have no Idea what I'm getting into. I can't just walk into my local "Violin Center" and receive the help I got when purchasing a guitar. Many questions are eating at me.
1) How many strings?
Electric violins are typically made with 5,6, or 7 strings. I'm leaning towards 6. It seems like it has good range without being cluttered.
2) Frets?
This is a biggie. Most violins don't have frets, but they might be an advantage.
I'll post more questions later as I can think of them.
SEXINESS
3) Affordability?
Most I see on the internet are $1,000+ and I don't want to pay over $300.
4) Any stores that sell them near Gallup, NM or Phoenix, AZ?

See if you get help and follow the rules, then you will NOT bring the Avant-Garde into your music.

Help! I'm trapped in my own sig! Is anyone reading this?!? HELLO?!?
Get a pick-up placed in an atypical violin. It is cheaper and will do the job just as well.
I'M AN ATHEIST LOL.
So many unanswered questions...
That looks fucking awesome! Now I want one....but I would prefer an electric cello more than a violin though
Turn left
4 strings is normal for a violin and you can do all you'd want on those. Maybe to get the range of a viola you'd go up to 5, but with positions you don't need more than that. I've never played electric, but I played "accustical" violin for a majority of my schooling.
Also frets are completely unnecessary and will hinder your fingers on a violin, and your ability to make the effects you can get out of a violin.

Finally some assistance. I have a clearer idea of what I should get now.
err.. i play a classical violin.. don't they have 4 strings? i've only seen electrics with four strings. and i don't think theres any such thing as a fretted violin, the strings are too tight for frets

I absolutely love a nice violin in my rock music to harmonize it all up. I don't care what anyone says, but Yellowcard does a great job throwing the electric violin into the mix. I saw them live at Warped Tour once, greatly enjoyed watching the violinist play. Very unique sound in a rock band. Go for gold.
A standard violin or electric violin has 4 strings moron. And before getting yourself caught up in an electric violin, get a regular one. Learn how to play the original before playing the electric.
can you do like a heavy metal solo on that thing? strumming the bow back and forth like a million seconds per inch
wait what?
XDeeZeroZero4Two-thousand six.

4 strings on an acoustic doesn't change that fact the makers go up to seven.

Saying that is like telling me to play an acoustic guitar before an electric.
Imagine what solos I can do with that

IF you don't want to pay over three hundred, you might not get what you want.
Other then that, I've got no advice.

Hey
A. There is a 99.9% chance you'll be unable to find someone who are willing to let you incorporate it into their music.
B. Electric violins aren't cheap. Specially for a good one.
This too will pass.
