the kubrick collab 2008-03-03 21:02:43

Hey y'all I had an Idea for a collaboration project celebrating one of the greatest directors of all time, Stanley Kubrick.

The Down lo,
-Each part will be 40-45 seconds
-there will be one part per movie
-24fps
-white background
-NO SPRITES (we're here to do kubrik justice not nintendo)
-don't just reanimate a scene from the movie, try to encapsulate the movie
-Violence okay (nothing as bad as a decapitations, but limb severing and punching are okay)
-Nudity not okay (that's a big one for all you eyes wide shut people)
-no porn (goes without saying)
-quality!!!!! (work hard on this, have at least 2 years good flash experience before tackling this)

Here are the movies that will be featured
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
The Shining (1980)
Barry Lyndon (1975)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Lolita (1962)
Spartacus (1960)

Deadline TBA probably may25th ish

Please try to join this collab! It will be a really interesting project and there are plenty of parts open!

1. I don't know who Stanley Kubrick is, but i just hope it's not you.
2. To start a collab you need a BA of 3.00. You don't even have a BA.
3. If you do get a BA, make a collab about a more memorable person.

He's only the best director of all time!!

2. To start a collab you need a BA of 3.00. You don't even have a BA.

True. But he's submitted two excellent flashes.

3. If you do get a BA, make a collab about a more memorable person.

Trust me, Kubrick is an amazing dude and deserves a collab.

And saying that, I believe this is a fantastic collaboration idea.

Response to the kubrick collab 2008-03-03 21:15:06

a couple of noteby the time its done I'll have the batting avr, indeed I had the batting avr but I got rid of the submission so I'm back at two. Second stanley Kubrick is a very famous film director I mean EVRONE HAS SEEN THE SHINNING OR 2001 a space odessy. don't you know the classic moment when jack nicholson burts through a door with an axe saying, here's johnny! or when fanfare for the modern man starts playing as the monkeys praise the monolith. OR even the end of Dr. Strangelove when the pilot rides the nuke as it falls down while he's waving his cowboy hat!

If you haven't heard of Stanley Kubrik, Than I am not mad at you. I'm sorry for you.

Also, I'd like to mention at this point The Monolith (TMA-01, Zagadka, Big Brother, if you will) that I made recently. I can build a menu over this. I think it would be pretty neat!

wow.

Wait! Maybe this collab could be about Mario instead, everyone knows that guy...

sigh

I hope this collab gets off the ground, it could be good. Kubrick is awesome.

Aw man. If I wasn't so busy, this sounds like a great idea for a collab! I would have been totally up for A Clockwork Orange, but I'm just too darn busy at the moment :(

Response to the kubrick collab 2008-03-03 22:27:30

OKAY! I made a quick 3D setup for the menu. The images used can be changed, and so can the 3D. Will I get co-author, even if I don't submit anything except the main menu?

This is it so far. I just noticed the lag. I'll either up the framerate or lower the segments per sphere.

Response to the kubrick collab 2008-03-03 22:33:27

What's "A Clockwork Orange" without porn and lolita complexes? (That's what it was like in the book and the movie, both of which were good.) Also, if doing "A Clockwork Orange," is creating an animation of the 21st chapter of the book okay? The movie only had twenty chapters of the book, as that's how it was released in America. Everywhere else had twenty one until it was re-released. Anthony Burgess had a little fit about that.

Response to the kubrick collab 2008-03-03 23:10:26

(I noticed Eyes Wide Shut isn't on here, lol)

I hardly know Flash, and I certainly don't have a BA.

HOWEVER, I know those films backwards and forwards. I've also been through three years of film school and know how to compose a shot and make it look good. I also know how to emulate the look and feel of his movies.

I want in, and I want 2001. Worse case scenario, you can use my part as an extra.

Some previous animations I've done.
Test Animation #1: Dragon
NOTE: Art by someone else, but sound design and animation by me.
Test Animation #2: Paint
NOTE: Everything by me except the music.

Dude...

Stanley Kubrick is considered to be in the top five most influential filmakers of the twentieth century...

2. To start a collab you need a BA of 3.00. You don't even have a BA.

The two flashes he does have have been featured on the front page and have a good score...

3. If you do get a BA, make a collab about a more memorable person.

Here's a joke for you (it's an old one, and no it's not mine):

Steven Speilberg dies and finds himself standing in front of St. Peter. St. Peter looks at him and says "I'm sorry, but we don't let director's into heaven.". Steven points to a guy in a t-shirt and shorts beyond the heavenly gate "But isn't that Stanley Kubrick?". "No, that's God. He just thinks he's Stanley Kubrick".

Response to the kubrick collab 2008-03-03 23:13:21

I have the highest enthusiasm for this collaboration, Dave.

Response to the kubrick collab 2008-03-04 01:18:40

Forgot to ask, what's the tone you're aiming for? Are you intending to affectionately parody these films, or to pay homage to these films?

Also, if I can't have 2001 (because, you know, that's hallowed ground and I'd imagine you'd want someone proven in the animation field), my second choice would be Dr. Strangelove. I'd love to do something with the fabled deleted pie fight.

Response to the kubrick collab 2008-03-04 06:19:19

HMMMM.... The pie fight would be a good easter egg. Anyway its an either or kind of thing. Whether or not you want to pardoy or to homage is up to you!

i would really like to do doctor strangelove, if thats alright

Response to the kubrick collab 2008-03-07 20:07:09

Sure you can try strangelove! Just let me know what you will try to do for it and if Clockwork Kubrick is alright with it. Clockwork Kubrick, is it okay if you take on 2001 rather than stangelove? Also the shinning is still up there. Great movie to do a flash for.
either way, welcome to the collab.

BTW I'm trying to getr lenkiobiscuit to join the collab for clockwork orange, He's showing a lot of interest so keep your fingers crossed. We can do this.

Cool.

Now, of course, comes the challenge of actually coming up with an idea. I've got one, but it's not really original.

Response to the kubrick collab 2008-03-09 00:16:57

In light of joining this collab, I've recently seen Dr. Strangelove. It's a fantastic film. If only I had the time, I might do something with it.

got a basic version of a scene set up going to do the part where jack nicholson is breaking down the door with the axe. Some issues I was thinking about. How could I rip the sound from that particular scene? Might also have some issues with the face since Im trying to aim for a fairly realistic feel.

Axe Test

hahaha hey that's fine PPP sounds great too. yes i have seen it, i have my copy of the entire Kubrick collection. and about the sounds, should be better to use any sounds? the actual sound in the scene? or a muted musical scene? cuz i was thinking on doig the sniper shot scene... and that has no music, and the sounds in that part are great!!! tzziiuuuuuuckpppahh!!!! arghhh!!!

Don't worry I know my way around coding pretty well, except when it comes to variables. I'll need it for the bio menu I'tll be kind of a film strip thing wehre you press a button and the reel moves down one showing the next guy.

Important rule! Doctor Strangelove hase to be in grayscale! Black, white, gray, no other colors. Just so it fits the movie is all. Yet again keep up the work

so i was developing my story board menu and I came up with this:

stop();
var frame:Number = 1;
/*sets inital visiblity*/
if (frame == 1) {
	backBtn._visible = false;
}

/*next button function*/
nextBtn.onRelease = function() {
	frame += 1;
	if (frame == 1) {
		backBtn._visible = false;
	} else {
		backBtn._visible = true;
	}
	gotoAndStop(frame);
};

/*back button function*/
backBtn.onRelease = function() {
	frame -= 1;
	if (frame == 1) {
		backBtn._visible = false;
	} else {
		backBtn._visible = true;
	}
	gotoAndStop(frame);
};

it's pretty useful since it only bases it on how many keyframes you have. This might also be useful for the main menu since we're not sure at this point how many contributors we're going to have.
