Mics and recording Feb. 26th, 2008 @ 02:05 AM Reply

well first i would just like to say i looked this up in the forums and i never found any real good answers.
i also googled it but all i can find is people trying to sell me there stuff.

so i use FL studio and i have acid pro 5.
now i would like to record vocals. actually i want to record myself raping. but i need advice as to what type of hardware equipment i should buy and how to connect it to my computer. I'm also running windows xp.
and on top of that i need advice as to what FREE software there is out there that will work with a mic/ other equipment that i may need to record vocals.

thank you for your help

haha they're saying that because you said raping, not rapping...rape being a severe crime (your rapping may or may not be a crime).

As far as recording to a hard drive. You need an interface....either a USB or Firewire connection with at least one pre-amp with phantom power, that is compatible with whatever recording software you're using.
To get a good sound you need - good musician+good rooom+good mic+ good mic placement.
Most recording interfaces you buy come with at least an LE version of a recording application you can use to record with.
As far as mic choice, I'm sure an sm58 would do just fine for your purposes.

(i hope your talking about rapping not raping)

anyways, to get a good recording I whould suggest getting a single channle pre amp ( usualy range from $40 - $100, I suggest this one) and a good condencer mic (a good one cost $100 and up, I like this one, this one is a really good deal) Also some people like Dynamics mics for vocals like this one or if your short on cash this one.

Also you might want to get a mic stand (here a good deal on one) but it's not nessasary.

Well, you put raping instead of rapping, so that was sorta on you there. =P

But yeh, the programs you have are good. As far as mic goes, I would suggest anything USB. I use a Line 6 TonePort UX1, that shit works wonders. Then I also got a Sennheiser e835 dynamic mic. Just these two alone will run you about $300. Good investments though. I must've dropped this mic about like 40 times, and it's over 2 years old, and it still works perfectly.

sound recorder works well for me, even though i never sing/rap/whatever and if i did i would probably kill someone. try sound recorder, if it doesn't work out for you then im not sure what else to use

o my god, lol sorry for the spelling error i didn't even notice that, now what they said makes sense. no i want to record me rapping. my budget over all for everything i might need to buy is around $300 right now, but i may be willing to pay more depends on how my job goes and how much i think i need the equipment.

$300 might get you an MBOX and a mic.
That'd do just fine.

I just recently discovered that a popping filter is a good investment, or they're also easy to make. Those are those circular things that you sometimes see placed in front of mics. This will help reduce those horrible spikes you hear when you pronounce consonants like "s", "p", "b", etc. You can get a good one for 20 or 30 dollars, or make your own by stretching some nylon pantyhose fabric over an embroidery loop for, like, 5 dollars. Or you can be really ghetto like me and just use a paper towel...
