Black metal is way different than death. Black metal, in my opinion is awful. It's mostly boring tremolo-style picking with organs, and a guy that shrieks into a mic. They all wear those spiky black suits. Death metal is aggressive, technical guitars with a growling singer.

And just because something is different that society's norms does not make it shit. I mean, I actually prefer the growling over "real" singing. I am just so tired of hearing every band sound alike, and none of them are good anyway. It adds an aggression to the music that typical vocals cannot do. For the genre, they fit, but wouldn't for anything else.

But then doesn't all the growling sound alike? Thats what it seemed like to me when I gave it all a try. It didn't seem aggressive at all.
I know the music I prefer slightly sounds the same, Off beat guitar, and walking basslines. and very few people in the norm likes it, whatever the norm may be.
Most people on newgrounds over the years always has put down 70s/80s/90s metal bands and the people who like it, and cram death metal or whatever type of metal into everything like its cool. It's the same thing over and over on this site.

While the vocals don't sound sound the same throughout death metal. Some have more screamish sounds, some with deeper, more compulsive sounding growls. They do range, just as normal vocals can.

The typical norm of today is pretty much that shit punk/ska/indie/emo sound. That and hip-hop/rap. I will admit between 70's/80's music and the aforementioned genres, no doubt whatsoever the old music is superior in every way.

Yes, but NG is mostly anti-establishment and like things simply because it's different. That's not the case with me. I used to make fun of death metal too. Then I actually listened to it, and liked it. I genuinely like it, not because NG does, or because society does not.

Typo, I meant convulsive, not compulsive. And I don't know why "While" is in the first sentence.

It still sounds the same, like every death band, no matter how differently you growl, its still growling.

Im sure the norm would be something mainstream, like fall out boy, marroon 5, and all those.
punk and ska are anti establishment, ska isnt even on the same page as these other genres. Indie is an other term for alternative rock. Emo isnt even real music. Its a fashion for places like hot topic to make money. And I dont even follow pop-rap/hip hop.

No, no, you stop right there.

If seriously can't name any good contemporary bands and artists, you're just obviously not looking hard enough. The worst problem with the current music scene is that people cling too much on their old favourites, and don't support new acts.

The punk you hear on the radio are poser pop punk bands that play for fame and money, not real punk like you would say Nu metal isnt real metal. The 70's/early 80s punk you hear on the radio are on classic rock stations, because the people who grew up listening to them still do. Even though I don't listen to the radio, im sure classic rock stations are the best. And if you can show me one Ska punk band beside No Doubt/Sublime/Rancid that are on the radio all the time. I will buy a CC album.

You're confusing the mainstream of a genre for the whole genre.

Or do you really think Metal is the only genre that has a scene that doesn't get major radioplay?

Of course not, and I never said that.

At 2/17/08 03:04 PM, BareNakedMike wrote: You said before you were tired of every band sounding alike. You're saying that the growling is an exception to sounding alike?

Right, because modern bands choose to sing the same exact way, and play guitar the exact same way. I'm not saying death metal is the only genre with differences. I'm just saying most mainstream bands sound alike. Honestly, if you were to play stuff like Fallout Boy, Motion City Soundtrack or Panic At the Disco, I would not be able to tell the difference.
