Well CNN is reporting that there has been another campus shooting at Northern Il University's DeKalb campus in/near Chicago. 18 students have been hurt with reports of two dead...one of whom I think is the gunman.

NIU was able to text/call/email its students quickly and effectively so the carnage is contained.

While a CNN reporterette speculated that "...it had to be a powerful gun..." because 18 ppl are wounded, there is no word yet on what type of gun/ammo was used.

"It has to be a powerful gun..."

You could easily wound someone and possibly kill them with your basic handgun.

Well, luckily there is the Presidential race so we're not seeing the same looping of the same scant information.

Number of people now being treated is down to 15 although they are reporting that the gunman shot 13 ppl mostly in the head. So I'm wondering if there were not two gunmen.

I'm also wondering if it wasn't a .410 the guy was using because they are talking about many head shots but only talking about one or two deaths.

In a new update, they are reporting the gunman used a shotgun Link to the hospital treating the victims...

I had heard about it when I walked home on my local news. I heard the shooter fragged himself too. A true shame, it seems our schools are no longer safe.

I wasn't belittling the power of guns, but pointing out that any gun can kill two and wound many. They figured out that it was a shotgun though, so that's a little deadlier than a handgun, depending on the shot.

Luckily it appears that this was not that bad of a shooting. 30 shots fired with a shotgun and pistol. So far we're looking at 3 in critical condition, 8 stable and 6 in good condition.

From a Yahoo report I read it said the gunman had a handgun and a shotgun, and he wasn't a student at the school. Four people included the gunman are dead.

Terrorists are people who use fear and killings to achieve a political goal. Thus he is not a terrorist as far as we can tell.

Ok..I realize that this guy is not a "terrorist," but this guy targeted civilians and killed them, and I could venture a guess and say that his victims were afraid.

Is this a joke to you!? Listen, I know a lot of people are having social issues and life like a break up and stuff, and that is no reason to shoot up a school. Nor is it a reason to be laghing at them. Like you said, 2 people died and so far you dont think thats much of a deal!! "Only 2 deaths" isnt nececarly the phrase I would say in this situation. What if that was you in that shooting? What would you think about doing and the aftermath of the massecure? Think about it, seriously.

I'm still shocked at how US citizens support guns. Guns that are used in murder, even when the majority of times they are used in legal ways.

These guns are then illegally smuggled into Mexico, which furthers the crisis in there because guns are illegal in Mexico. With those guns, criminals and drug dealers control immigration and drug flows into the United States.

Some of us were raised partially on hunted food. Have you ever tried to kill a wild animal with a knife?

Plus, gun deaths are really not that common. Here are the statistics from 2004 (the most recent ones):
* 16,750 suicides (56% of all U.S gun deaths),
* 11,624 homicides (40% of all U.S gun deaths),
* 649 unintentional shootings, 311 from legal intervention and 235 from undetermined intent (4% of all U.S gun deaths combined).

You can count out the suicides, because they would kill themselves even if they had no guns. This leaves us with roughly 12,000 shooting deaths a year. In other words, not enough to justify taking everyone elses' guns away.

If we got fully invaded, many people could just grab their gun from their house and go fight. In England, they'd run around like chickens with their heads cut off until they either got shot or given a gun by the military. Which is better?

Furthermore, a ban now is near impossible. There are so many guns in the US, so it would be an extreme hassle to collect and destroy/store all of them. It would waste a lot of money, leave some people without food, and just piss some people off. I, for one, would not give up my gun. I wouldn't fire at them, but I will not give it to them.

They only seem very common because of media coverage but they are actually quite rare.

All we can do is enforce the law and encourage parents to raise their kids properly... I don't like shootings, but they come with the greater benefit of civilian firearms.

Bear in mind that most of the guns that are used in crimes were obtained illegaly. Guns allow us to defend ourselves from other persons using firearms. If you cancel out the 2nd amendment than you would be giving criminals the upperhand, and you would be able to defend yourself because it would be illegal for you to do so with a gun.
