He didn't win simply because he had fun and created what he wanted. With very few exceptions, the only way you can get monthly (aside from having an enormously popular name) is if you give the audience exactly what they want, even if it means compromising your previous standards and/or producing crap.
He didn't win because not many people watched it. If more people had watched it, more people would have loved it. I tried leaving it up on the front page for extra long, but should have really pushed it harder in some other form. I consider it a failure of our system to MAKE more people watch it, because I can guarantee there are thousands of people on NG who would have loved it if they had clicked the link.
Well, that was kind of my point. People aren't really interested in watching original content. "The Ultimate Showdown", the Halo parodies, the "Awesome" movies, they'll always dominate.
The dress-up games (more accurately "the strip-down games"), the date sims, the hentai, they'll always dominate.
It's either got to have boobs, video games, or something else to entice them to click.
If someone sees original content that doesn't strike them as "sexy" or a parody of some sort, they're not going to click it.
It's not your fault, it's not the system's fault, it's not the author's fault.
It's the fickle viewing audience. Now and then something original will take flight and become popular (Brackenwood, Xombie, etc), but it doesn't happen often.
Even the word of mouth for original content doesn't do well. Someone may have been more inclined to forward an "I am Legend" parody to a friend who had just seen the movie and would get the humor, than an original cartoon with humor that the friend might not get or enjoy.
It's just disappointing, really. There's no way to correct the problem though. So I should probably stop complaining about it...
