INTRODUCTION
Are you ready for this?
This is the ultimate in collaborations, and yes, despite my lack of a batting average, I am allowed to do this, for I am made of lulz and win. (jmtb liked the idea.)
So, this is it. The Flash TimeWarp.
HOW TO
If you have any questions, please post in the thread first, and someone'll help you out - or, if it's important, PM me.
Okay. First up, allow me to explain how this is going to work.
The TimeWarp Collab is a collaboration, where everything is made in Flash 1. Ouch. I did some research, and found a trial of Flash 1, which will last 30 days, and which encourages people to share with their friends. There's no link to the trial here, I'll PM it to those who say they want to animate. There are also rules, the main one being 'no advanced methods'. (See Rules)
The collaboration opens this Sunday the 10th, and I'll send out links to a free Flash 1 trial via PM then. The deadline is March 31st, OR 30 days after I've sent you the Flash 1 trial link. No abusing this trial, AT ALL. I hate program pirates.
The reason I'm making this thread beforehand is I'm just finalizing music, testing out the bugs (For example: how to get music on a program that doesn't support music) and this gives administrators a chance to reply and say 'NO WAI!' (Personally, I think it's been too long since Newgrounds has been sued...)
SETTINGS
To change these, once you have received Flash 1, open it, and go Format - Document - you should find these settings there.
Frame Rate: 25 FPS
Document Size: Width: 6.5 ", Height 4.5 "
Background Color: For convenience, 'White'.
Length: Around 10-20 seconds. (Check the PM when you ask for the trial.)
RULES
No 'advanced methods'
This is the biggest rule, as without it, the challenge isn't really there. There are absolutely, under no circumstances, any 'tricks'. No photoshop graphics, no using frame by frame to create something that wasn't around in 1991, no drawing graphics outside of Flash 1, etc. There's a bit of leeway on these rules - and if you have any questions, post of PM, and I'll make a call, on a case-by-case basis.
Allowed/Disallowed
Pretty much everything is allowed, but I'll explain this briefly - if you can animate it, do it. The only things that aren't allowed are overly crappy animations, glocks, and porn (PG-13, please!).
Transparency Rule
I warn you, I'll be incredibly anal about making sure people don't cheat. When you email me your files, I will inspect them very carefully, to make sure you didn't import images. If you did, I'll tell you to fix it. But so help me, if you tried to hide the fact that you cheated, I will be very pissed off. So, make it possible for me to check how you animated it, or just say why not, but what happened.
FAQ
Q. I BE COAUTHOR PLZ?
A. Let's not open this barrel of worms... *sigh* I'll explain, towards the end of the collab, how I'm deciding who gets co-authorship, but different things will decide it, not just the amount of contributions.
Q. You mentioned 'Music'. What is the song?
A. The answer's just a jump to the left... And a step to the right...
Q. What if there's a HUGE amount of interest?
A. If more people are interested, I might make it two songs, extend the time, or see if I can't make it a bigger flash.
Q. What length should I make the animation?
A. That'll be revealed when it's time, but probably around 10-20 seconds. For now, muck around, and the proper length will be revealed in true time.
Q. Can anyone contribute?
A. Anyone with either good grammar, or one flash that's already in the portal.
Q. What are you doing?
A. Finding out ways to get around Flash 1's incapabilities, plus giving help, and a bit of animation if I have the time. And doing a preloader - and that most certainly won't be easy.
Q. Flash 1 won't <SOMETHING>!
A. It's over 15 years old. It won't be perfect. Post in the thread if you need a workaround.
Q. Flash 1 won't doesn't accept audio!
A. I'm formulating a very complicated workaround for that, but one that should make it easy for you to animate in.
Flash 1 is a real challenge to animate in, but it's possible. I urge everyone who has any animation experience to do this, because this is a real, once in a lifetime experience. And I can get it to work - hell, if all goes wrong, I'll just chuck your animations together in Flash 8 and export it that way!
So, get retro!
