...can we see the whole image?
It's supposed to look like the dragon is coming to life out of the kimono fabric ...or something like that.
What size do you guys work at? Are your files like 599 x 700px at 72dpi? or do you have them larger to get the detail? 'cuz on mine, her face is all smooth and 'young' looking until I zoom out... then she looks like some crazy deformed old hag. boo.
Damn, you're really upping the ante, I think that's one of the best submissions so far.
As for working digitally, I tend to start small resolution (500 x 500) and do rough work, so it's easy to see the whole picture. I always use 300dpi (because they may be prints later on). As I develop my lines and work out all my proportions, poses, and general backgrounds (adding more canvas size if necessary) and double-check them, I go to image > image size and then double, triple the dimensions so I can accommodate all the necessary detail. I go over my rough work and add detail, then color, then color adjustments.
On a finished piece, I generally end up in about 3000 for width/height. For online / forum / DA viewing, I resize them so the entire thing can be seen without scrolling.
I had to join NG just to enter this contest. I've been lurking and most been viewing flash / audio submissions for the past year or so...so this is my first post. XD
Anyhow, obligatory WIP since I've posted. So far 480 x 600 in keeping with the spirit of 8" x 10" ratio, so this piece will definitely be resized and resized again. I'm just about done with the figure, and checking her proportions, pose, etc for distortions. No tracing whatsoever, but used my hand as a reference when drawing. About three hours in, because I draw slow.
My usual style is anime/manga, but I do draw realism...it just takes four times as much work, more if it's lineless. I haven't decided whether I'll leave the lines in for the final product yet. Critiques / comments welcomed.
