Here's a site that might help if you're looking for nice, high rez reference pics. I would use porn, but sometimes its better to use these. See what you think.

And here's a great one for fantasy, dynamic poses. Hope this helps!

It's getting really hard to tell what's created and what's basically a tracing of a photograph :p

You could just make a post saying that contestants are required to give reference pictures (if applicable). I'm sure everyone who used them has their pictures saved. It's not a drastic change or anything, so I think most people wouldn't mind. In most art contests I join, rules usually state that you have to give credit to all reference and traced pictures in their submission description (as the idea is not your own).

Although from my experience, tracing is almost considered to be "stealing" or "cheating", because it's not so much an artist's skill and creativity/originality as his copying skills (especially if the image traced is not his/her own picture). There's a very noticeable difference between coloring over an existing picture and drawing from scratch.

Just a few cents.

Also, an update. Mostly work done on the gun and converting her clothes into lineless style. The model/make I'm using is a Beretta 92F with a threaded barrel. Rough coloring with basic detail, haven't really refined the reflections and such.

And a high resolution to fully appreciate the detail :D (2400 x 3000, 845kb - large)

I first thought I'd try an old looking style, but I fell like there's something missing.
Shoul I just stick with this style or would it be beter to do it full color??
Please respond!

I'll post my refs

I asked my brother to pretend he was a hot girl and pose for me with some old guns! :D
He was not very successful about the hot girl part, so I used a few more refs.

I was in a hurry this morning, so I didn't post it here, but here is my 3rd and final? entry. I didn't use a reference picture on any of them but my second, and only for the bird's head. The rest, for better or worse, is all me

Man, your brother sure does take is role seriously. I think it's his expression that sells "hot chick". Or maybe the phantom crotch lurking to his left.. That said, thanks for sharing the reference pic...that's hilarious.

About your colour question, I'd say if the final product is actually sci-fi fantasy-like, then I'd say don't change. I'm not exactly sure what the final pic will be, but really you have to decide whether the fantasy aspect of this is "topless stripper sheriff" or "Western in Hell/Alien World/Alternate Dimensions". One of those denotes you stay with the sepia, the other implies you twisted the colour scheme somewhat. It's your call...I don't know where you were heading with it. Fun stuff though. That's what, our first cowgirl?

Haha, thanks for the comments man! I'm experimenting with colour right now, still not sure if it's better than sepia but I like it... Also I'm thinking about making her a thief instead of a sheriff....but for that I'd have to cover the lower part of her face... Many many doubts..
I'll probably end up doing both, if I have time,...

Anyway, came across this guy this morning on DA. If he was a member here we'd all be doomed!!!

hey i made this one also but it looks very awkward,
she looks bored or dazed, and shes got one foot on some platform thing with some kind of staff(?)
anyways I came up with this by just making a doodle on photoshop so everything was retty much made up. She is in some place with dim lighting and a painting behind her. I just thought of putting in a zombie or some creature but not sure how the hell... it makes sense.

thanks

So this will be my last example before I post the final pic. Don't bother commenting on the axe as I'm going to make a new one.

All other critiques are more then welcome.

Greetings all.
I plan on entering this competition but have some questions. Perhaps they're already posted in a rules section already? Anyways, my main concern is what will entries be judged upon?

I'm only asking because I'd like to use a more dynamic pose, but Heavy Metal Cover Art has always been predominantly straight-forward "pin-up" art. So is the goal to be as similar to the traditional styles and color schemes? Or character design?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions and apologies if they've been answered elsewhere. :)

Only the pose, courtesy of posemaniacs, I had to do the rest of the stuff (knife, clothing, hair..).

I work today which means I wasn't supposed to touch this. Unfortunately I couldn't sleep. So then I got into getting this done, and didn't go to sleep even though I was tired hours ago. Had to force myself to quit mid brush stroke.

Not much time now, I´ll be brief.
First of all, I FAILED. It was too much for me learninig to paint digitally at the level I needed for my idea to come out successfully. I´m deepfully sorry. But I won´t abandon my hopes of mastering it, so I´ll keep working on it.

Curiously enough, An article about "Metal Hurlant" fell in my hands last weekend. After reading it and some of the comics it mentioned, I decided to make a picture fast (HAAAH HA, haaa... Fool of me, I´ve just finished it NOW.) just for the sake of it.

My apologies for my failure, but comments will be appreciated.
Hope you enjoy it anyway.

its awesome art.. Probably not what pox wanted for this contest. but its still a cool piece.
I think all the thick lines muck up the details. probably thinner outlines inside the work and a thick bold outline around each character would make it easier to see all the work better. not sure tho.
