He answered this a few pages back:
Anyways, you don't have to put all the details, but it gives extra points :P Also it's an extra challenge to place your figure properly so it doesn't hide too much of the title.
By the way, is anyone trying black and white so far? My Alice is done (though I won't post it just now) and I think I'll try a different approach. I always end up spend way more time one this contests than I what I actually can...
enough for tonight, any comments? Her hands and legs are gonna be dragon-like
about 50% done. still a lot of shading and details to go.

I like the dog's mechanic leg. I guess a red LED would go nice on it though! :)
Sorry for double posting, but here's my WNLIPBIWOSC ( Work No Longer In Process But In Want Of Some Criticism)

probably has to do with the fact that the shading and rendering on the dog is dead on, but the shading on the dogs gauntlet, and woman is flawed , which makes no sense.
I mean then it again referencing a photo isnt that hard, but if you want to set this straight then post the actual dog reference. that would settle this as, even a goo reference wouldnt be picture perfect.

I agree that the shading on the dog is much nicer, this is because I had a reference to draw from, whereas the rest of the elements are without reference (and still in progress). While I find it extremely irritating to have to prove myself, I'm posting details of the original dog and the painted dog just because I'm so pissed off to have been called a liar. The original reference I drew from was less than 1/10th the resolution of the painted dog, so yes- seeing brushstrokes is difficult when you shrink it down and place it in a smaller canvas... but isn't not seeing prushstrokes supposed to be GOOD?
Decided to scrap the colored pencil thing, downloaded a trail of photoshop and im going to focus on the pirate and draw just her, heres what i got so far

thats terrible tracework.
you guys should REALLY REALLY be referencing your photos not tracing over them.

Excellent suggestion.

Good idea. So far so good. Downloaded a trial of photoshop? Well, if you're new at photoshop, don't forget the blurred brushes which help to hide the brush strokes. Also, blurring and coloring the linework helps to hide the lines. I love your music btw!
Did the line work for the body, anyone know any good online tutorials for coloring skintones im having trouble making it look real, heres WIP Gonna do an apocalyptic beach sunset in background

you should probably think about taking some detail off of the dog or putting way more detail on the girl because it looks like the dog is the focus of the cover instead of the girl. you might want to focus on drawing a hot girl instead of a hot dog. tee hee. get it? hot dog.

whoa, you should really reference, that tracejob looks painful

ehh... nevermind.. fine
forget I said anything.
Hey, not to sound like I know anything or anything, but since most likely people are using reference images, is it legal under fair use to compete for a prize without crediting the images' creators?

the photo has to be really obvious copy and paste job for that to be an issue.

I know I already kind of mentioned this earlier in the thread, but check out this youtube vid by Vortex00. It shows him coloring skin and hair. I think it would really help you out in that area:

Some techniques to take from this vid: filter:Gaussian Blur for highlights and things, Image:Adjust Hue and Saturation to fine-tune the overall color of the skin, the use of three skin tones: dark for shadows, base color for most of the area, and highlights for the lighter parts. Also good to know is to put your base color on a separate layer so you can Select:Load Selection, which will select everything on that layer so you don't have to worry about coloring within the lines.

Yeah, I re-did the dog with less shading detail (and a few other changes) to make him fit in a bit better, the work on the girl has BARELY begun, she needs a lot more work. I just did the dog first.

Personally, I take my own source photos. I've only done two pictures that didn't use my own stock, but they were completely non-profit... Meh.
Getting back to your point though; I think, for the most part, these pictures are going to be radically different from their source images. Hopefully to the point where they look nothing like the original reference materials - at least for the figures. So it shouldn't be an issue, as MindChamber said.
