I couldn't join the festivities due to an awesome presentation by Simon Ashby, Ubisoft's first sound guy. Man, it was really really cool...it was all about the video game audio industry.
Did you know that the PS1 alloted only 512K to sound for its games? The PS2 quadrupled the space, though - now they have 2MB. Two megabytes. That's like less than ten seconds of CD-quality music. And they have to construct entire soundscapes and environments with it.
They have 20 megs to work with for the 360 and PS3, so that's a little over a minute of CD-quality. And they have to keep it sounding interesting over the many days you play the game.
THESE GUYS ARE MAGICIANS.
