Bottom line: using sprites from video games is stealing and is way for lazy 14 yr olds to submit something to the portal without having to actually make anything themselves.
Four Swords MisAdventure is pretty good. It has excellent use of sprites, pretty good script, decent animation, good voice actors and a pretty good flow over all.
I know that there are a lot of sprite movies that are crap. The ones that are just typically fanyboy dream mashups tend to be the flag ship of those. But because those suck so bad isn't a reason to condemn the entire genre.
I do see where you are coming from with the distaste of the ripped art and sprites. Its understandable when we have such strict standards on the art portal, and not the flash portal. Tom has even made mention about cracking down on the ripped sprites. But some times, that is all people have to start with.
As jonny mentioned, maybe these kids don't have any art skills. Which is usually the case. But if they have good everything else, why not let them make them with the equivalent of paper dolls and cut outs. It'll at least "look" better than what they can draw.
