*sigh*

Dis Game. It's been up there for what... 4 months now? It's fucking ridiculous.
I wouldn't mind so much if it at least used original characters.

It's pretty successful, spawned several online communities and forums. So I can understand that the staff decided to leave it there, even though I don't like it that much either.

Its success depends mainly on not using original characters actually. It would be just another defense game otherwise.

I actually enjoy that game.
Also, it's been up there for so long because it's continually updating.

Wow... brutal. I personally don't think sprite movies should be allowed on Newgrounds. Stolen art isn't allowed in the art portal, why allow it in the flash portal? Just because you add a few tweens doesn't make it your own...

it's really an insult to animators everywhere who put hard work and effort into what they love. Especially when they get credit for it.
It'd be like someone submitting a filter to the art portal and it wins awards and gets front paged.
people are annoying xD

I don't get what's with the sprite bashing.
Sure, there's a lot of shit put through, but there are some decent sprite flashes done, that people put a lot of hard work into.

I find that funny. The guy who made that sent me a PM, requesting a couple of people who gave it negative criticism to be blocked from viewing it. Since he thought they were zero bombing it ...

I think you should blame the voting demographic who vote 5 if your Flash uses recognisable characters ...

I just don't like sprite flashes because they are basically plagiarizing the video game the sprites were stolen from. And I don't think any of them are really good. Those sprites are not meant to make decent movies out of. They are very limiting. You have only one perspective in which to 'shoot' your entire movie. Sprite movies are pretty much all tweened, no frame by frame, even when it would be appropriate. I think it is possible to make a decent sprite movie. But the only reason you would want to make one is if you were too lazy to draw your own characters, in which case you're probably too lazy to write a decent script ,and dialogue, and find appropriate music, and do a good job animating it.

Bottom line: using sprites from video games is stealing and is way for lazy 14 yr olds to submit something to the portal without having to actually make anything themselves.

Except for, you know, people who customize sprites and create their own custom sprites to add new perspectives to the piece.
And maybe they use sprites because they can't draw?
But if the community is in such an uproar about sprites...... maybe I'll just take my sprite work and leave......

Four Swords MisAdventure is pretty good. It has excellent use of sprites, pretty good script, decent animation, good voice actors and a pretty good flow over all.

I know that there are a lot of sprite movies that are crap. The ones that are just typically fanyboy dream mashups tend to be the flag ship of those. But because those suck so bad isn't a reason to condemn the entire genre.

I do see where you are coming from with the distaste of the ripped art and sprites. Its understandable when we have such strict standards on the art portal, and not the flash portal. Tom has even made mention about cracking down on the ripped sprites. But some times, that is all people have to start with.
As jonny mentioned, maybe these kids don't have any art skills. Which is usually the case. But if they have good everything else, why not let them make them with the equivalent of paper dolls and cut outs. It'll at least "look" better than what they can draw.

If you create your own sprites of an original character, I don't consider it a sprite animation. I would consider it pixel art animation. I would define sprite as a character ripped directly from a video game.

Also, drawing is kind of a necessary part of animation. Animation is moving visual art. If you can't draw, you'll be hard pressed to make a decent animation.

Art forum, what's the best way to fight procrastination?

I just can't get anything done. I tell myself "Today I'm working on this". But I never do. I get to my tablet, and don't do anything. I know this will have an obvious answer, but whatever.

When I do get past the procrastination, it's usually because I'm genuinely excited for what I'm doing.

So... get enthusiastic about what you're doing?

Rebuttal of the claim that lazyness is the reason people use sprites in animation.

Depends on how clever the sprite artist is. Some stuff out there is amazing. Really pushing the boundries of the sprites. Others ... Not so much.
