Anyone have anything to add to this list? Its a list of different mediums of art, if you catch my drift. I feel like i've missed some stuff.

Painting/drawing
Music
Filming/animation
Writing
Dance
Sculpting

Ah, photography is a good one, thanks!

The thing is, im doing this animation, and its gonna revolve around art in general, like a homage. And i have a lot of space to fill up in this song (Detektivbyrån - Lyckans Undulat), that is 2:50 long. Im still in the story boarding-stage, and i want to get as many kinds of mediums in there.

Here is how far i've gotten so far, feel free to critisize btw, but thats not the reason im posting here. I think this is a better place to ask this question than the flash forum, where i already have a thread about this animation, but i don't get much feedback over there.

I could have gone to a proper art school if I was more capable of talking about my art rather than just making it. I still don't understand why it's so important to tell people what the art means, I think the art should speak for itself. Oh well, that admissions guy was a douchebag.

Its kind of shitty, the schools i have applied to have been without interviews or "write about your art"-shit. I paint because i can't explain such things in words, so its a paradox to make me explain myself.

The reason you have to explain your work is if you make a mistake or people don't get wtf it is that you did, you would have the skill to back up your arguments. So basically, you're being tested on how well you can BS your way around something so people buy your crap

Thats half of the truth. Explaining your stuff can also make them much more intresting, and add a greater understanding for the viewer. I've seen stuff that really makes no sense at all and i just thought it was rubbish until i read an explination (or excuse, as i like to call it) by the artist, and i got a whole new understanding for it. Im not very fond of this way of working though. In my opinion each art should be able to stand on its own feet, ready to be viewed without an explination.

Well, there's performance art, which includes installation art and things like that as well as other interactive art experiences that don't necessarily fit neatly into other categories.

Here is how far i've gotten so far

That's about 10 times more epic than I imagined a flash on this subject would be. It looks great so far, even the parts that are just roughed out right now.

At 5/7/09 10:43 AM, BlackmarketKraig wrote: I could have gone to a proper art school if I was more capable of talking about my art rather than just making it. I still don't understand why it's so important to tell people what the art means

That's pretty much the entire reason I chose not to go to art school, because I realized I don't like the attitude of a large portion of the art community (well, the fine art community anyway). I think it's something very specific to visual arts though because lots of writers absolutely refuse to talk about the meaning behind stuff they write (J.D. Salinger being a good example) and nobody attacks their work as having less artistic merit because of it.
Subject Change!

Somebody brought up the fabled Art Portal recently and I wanted to bring that up here and see what the word on the street about that was, particularly since Camp North seems to be down indefinitely now and I am not especially interested in posting stuff to DeviantArt. Anybody have any thoughts or news updates on that?

I'm in more of a tech school.. art program. So we've never talked about our art like that.

So I wanted to get my tablet fixed right? The usb cable is busted, and it costs $100 fuckin dollars to send it in for repair! what a ripoff. I tried to ask them for just the cable, seeing how it looks pretty simple to replace it on my own, but no, they want you to pay that extra 98 bucks. Forget that, I'm just going to buy an intuos4 instead of having it break 3 more times, ending up costing more than how much I paid for it to start with.

When I got my Cintiq I noticed it had 3 dead pixels so I called Wacom to talk to them about it. After a ridiculously long diagnotics test where they had me change the background of my screen and tell them what color the bloody pixel looked like he told me that because I only had 3 I didn't meet their minimum amount of dead pixels for a replacement. It turns out their like acceptable threshold is something ridiculous like 16 or 30. Don't get me wrong, I love my Cintiq, but Wacom's quality control standards are somewhat questionable haha.

Pen and paper is still technology though. Sooner or later, we'll have technology which lets us draw with our minds

OUR MINDS MAN! our minds

but yeah...I ordered my intous4. Can't wait for it since I haven't drawn on my computer for months now

All of the stuff that I've posted on the forum began as a pencil sketch on paper. I like using my tablet to color stuff, but I've never gottne the hang of drawing with it and I don't think I would want to anyway because it doesn't feel as intuitive as just drawing on paper and I miss being able to easily rotate my page aroudn to make it easier to draw certain lines.

Sounds cool, you have to let me know when we have that sort of stuff avaible to the general public... :3

i always thought it would be cool if i could wear some sort of head machine that would create pictures of what you where thinking... that way.. it WOULD come out actly how you planned it :3.

athough i love pen and paper the most, im starting to get a tad rusty due to the fact im painting models nearly every night and a tad stuffed for time... >.<...

i find tables quite hard (depending on how big they are) beacuse i want to make big lines some times but then it goes of the side, but i love the ctrl/z feature the best... i wish i could delet my last line on paper sometimes :3...

ok so

im holdin off on getting a wacom tablet for a while cause i cant draw worth crap.

ive been looking at tutorials on how to draw anime allllll day, and its helping a lot but i dont feel like im getting anywhere.

my next step is to get some art supplies and just pretty much draw all day listening to music. possibly asian kung fu generation cause it would totally fit the anime drawing lol

so the point of this thread is to ask two questions.. what kinda paper//pencils should i get cause i dont know anything about drawing detailed sketches

and #2.. anyone know like some good tutorials on drawing? or like books i can buy on drawing and shading and like... character proportion balance (i cant remember what its called, basically make all parts of the body the right sizes)

is this the best step for me right now? cause id love to learn to draw anime, and possibly learn to animate it with a wacom tablet. but i decided, screw the tablet til i learn shading and learn to draw with it lol

Well there's your problem right there. If you want to draw, than learn to actually draw. Start doing observational studies and figure drawings, and learn the basics of value and shading Then if for some incredibly stupid fucking reason you still want to draw anime, you can pull from the skills you've already taught yourself (or better yet have taken a few classes on) and use them to draw in that style.

wow i fucking knew this would happen. i PM'ed egoraptor about my idea for this anime and wanted him to make it with me, then he said no and came out with girlchan in paradise. i fucking knew when i wanted to make mine everyone would say i stole it from egoraptor. this is fucked up.

and NO mine will actually be well written, not just countless stereotype after stereotype.. and will actually have a plot
