I actually met someone from the hacker group. He talked a bit about it, said they were able to get the DOS and crash the site...three times I think.

So, yeah, Hubbard actually stated during his lifetime that it should be one of Scientology's top priorities to recruit Celebrities through whatever means neccessary.
Anonymous better damn well not forget to kick some e-ass.

The channers sure do a lovely job of pretending to be bad ass.
Although the idea of "anonymous" is intimidating, it simply comes across as... well.. cheesy. Considering the threats that have been issued, making silly prank phone calls and trying to slow down the Scientology website is about the gayest, least non-threatening thing they could do. I do understand the need to actually rid Scientology from the mainstream, but honestly, a few thousand twenty-some year-old basement dwellers aren't going to save the internets, lulz or not.

That's why they're recruiting a lot of non-anons to help out. There's not a lot of regular active anonymous, but they can get quite a few people together when they need to. This seems like an issue that they can get a united front with too.

This whole thing is fail if you ask me.
We are here trying to battle Scientology, but not truly doing it for the lulz.
Anon seems to have forgotten about WHY we do this, and is actually trying to do something good in the world.
Now, I will say that Scientology is more ridiculous then most religions, but that doesen't mean that we should try to attack them.
People are trying to make this official with B.S like "Write to a congressman", and trying to tell us how to fight these faggots, and it seems that most of us are listening.
Look people, this thing can STILL be salvaged and made funny, but if you newfags are looking for something bigger and better and want to have a real effect on the world in a way that isn't really funny at all, then your in the wrong place.
I'd rather anon fail then win here, because the win will also be fail with the addition of even more people hearing about us (which has already happened, I guess you fags don't know rules 1 or 2).
Try to google anonymous, the 2nd result is an ED article that will tell potential newfags ALL they need to get on 4chan and fail it up.

I feel that Anonymous has taken the first step in the right direction.
There is no shortage of information regarding Scientology as an evil, malevolent, and absolutely corrupting force in America. There is also no shortage of personal claims from former Scientologists of the depraved and sociopathic actions of the group. L. Ron Hubbard was a very sad excuse for a human being. A pederast through and through, he stole most of what would later become the infrastructure of Scientology (OT levels and such) from the Ordo Templi Orientis by means of the rather poor judgment of American rocket scientist, Jack Parsons. Parsons, a personal student of Aleister Crowley, thought Hubble to be the perfect partner and embraced him entirely, sharing innumerable secrets of the OTO. No sooner had Parsons done this did Hubble rob Parsons with ludicrous cash schemes, the secret rites of the OTO, and even Parsons' own woman.
In a letter to Parsons, Aleister Crowley himself made sure to mention that he "sensed an enemy" in Hubble and that Jack was behaving foolishly by keeping him around.
Read more about the Crowley/Parsons/Hubble story in the book Sex & Rockets.
---
"One controversial aspect of Hubbard's early life revolves around his association with Jack Parsons, an aeronautics professor at Caltech and an associate of the British occultist Aleister Crowley. Hubbard and Parsons were allegedly engaged in the practice of ritual magick in 1946, including an extended set of sex magick rituals called the Babalon Working, intended to summon a goddess or "moonchild." (Among occultists today, it is widely accepted that Hubbard derived a large part of 'Dianetics' from Golden Dawn occult ideas such as the Holy Guardian Angel.) The Church insists Hubbard was a US government intelligence agent on a mission to end Parsons' magickal activities and to "rescue" a girl Parsons was "using" for magickal purposes. Critics dismiss these claims as after-the-fact rationalizations. Crowley recorded in his notes that he considered Hubbard a "stupid lout" who made off with Parsons' money and girlfriend in an "ordinary confidence trick". Discussions of these events can be found in the critical biographies Bare-Faced Messiah, A Piece of Blue Sky and in The Marburg Journal of Religion."

Ok, I'm know I'm going to get flamed to hell, and probably have my account hacked by one of these individuals, but here I go. I am against Scientology, but I am also against Anonymous. Anonymous is a most likely a group of script kiddies.
The types of attacks they utilized lead me to believe that very few people involved are either skilled or involved in this for anything more than attention. From what I gather, the two type of technical attacks were the DDOS to take down the scientology site and the flooding of the fax lines. The DDOS attack (Distributed Denial of Service attack) involves getting a bunch of computers to flood an internet connection. This is usually done by putting viruses onto various systems and then controlling them remotely. Nothing new or creative about it, and probably more than enough programs on the net to perform it. The second attack, the flooding of the fax lines, was simply a variation on war dialing, flooding phone lines with autodialers.
A hacker worth his/her salt that was really interested in talking down scientology would break into their network and gain as much information as they could. Perhaps this stunt was merely to raise attention to recruit more members, members who would have the technical prowess to perform such an attack. This could also be a publicity stunt to make more people aware of their cause, but I still have my doubts about this.
Let's analyze their behavior a bit further. Another one of their techniques was prank calls. This is childish nonsense. Also, when watching their videos, I can't help but be reminded of one thing: Death Note. Death Note is an anime, and in it, and one of its distinctive features is that the main characters early in the show send messages to one another over the television that display their symbol on the screen with the content of the message being read from a digitized voice. Just look for the second episode to see what I'm talking about. Last but not least, 4chan seems to be their main "base," which I think more than speaks for itself.
Let's now assume for the moment that I am wrong. Then in this case, I am even more strongly against Anonymous. If I am wrong, then the groups is most likely constituted both of members who do really want to see the end of Scientology and those who are in it simply for the thrill of participating in such an campaign. If this is the case, then I support the cause of the first group, and I will reserve judgment on their methods until I see how they proceed with what they have done (though I do take issue with the DDOS because they did most likely infect the computers of innocent people). The second group, though, scares me a bit.
This second group of people are thrill seekers, if they are successful and aren't caught, this will only encourage their behavior. Right now they are going after scientology, but who will they go after once they are done? Currently, they are getting practice and getting a rush, and they will escalate. These thrill seekers will most likely move on to other targets once they are done with scientology. While I doubt they will retain unity, they could form skilled teams to go after other targets, some which will lilkey have more legitimacy to the mainstream public the scientology does. In the end, they will be caught, but what kind of damage will they do in the interim .
At 1/26/08 04:09 PM, FatherTime89 wrote: If Anonymous wins, then they'll have a huge power trip we'll never hear the end of, but we'll be rid of scientology.
And then they will continue on to other targets.
But what happens if they lose?
Most likely, they will be arrested. What they have done is illegal. Even if a DDOS attack in and of itself isn't illegal, the act of hacking other people's computers to accomplish it is. War dialing is also a crime, and the prank calls are a form a harassment.
Right now, I'm willing to bet that someone in the government is monitoring for more of this type of activity. They have already broken the law, and by posting that video on the internet they have declared themselves to be a group of cyber vigilantes, which at this point is only a hop skip and a jump away from cyber terrorists. They are a rogue group of hackers outside of government control, and don't think that those who are paid to be paranoid haven't had the same thoughts that I've posted here on the subject. They are probably already under investigation for what they have already done.
At 1/25/08 09:11 PM, SolInvictus wrote:
but now they're not just speaking out against it, they're attacking scientology's freedom of speech. well at least they're hacking activities are.
Exactly. If this stunt was really to raise awareness, then I'm willing to let this slide, except for their involvement of by standers.
The Internet is like a screwdriver. You can use it to take an engine apart and understand it, or you can see how far you can stick it in your ear until you hit resistance.

That may be, but there really is no comparing the two. It's like comparing Hitler to the bored policeman who threatens you with a J-walking ticket. Scientology is an absolutely vile cult the likes of which in regards to size and influence has never been seen. Anonymous may be annoying, but Scientology is terrifyingly dangerous. Even though the "IRL Raids" will likely not amount to anything more than childish antics and ineffective protests, it is still a perfectly good cause no matter how misguided it may appear.

Flyers were all over my campus at the college I go to for the protests at Santa Barbara and LA; I wish I could go to either protest, but considering I have a cold, that may be a bad idea.
However, I still support Anon in this.....
Far away, across the field, the tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees, to hear the softly spoken magic spells.......
