Like it or not, the long-fought next-generation DVD format "wars" that were fought between the HD-DVD format and Blu-Ray have come to a strangely conclusive end. This is unexpected, especially considering that in the 80s, Sony's betamax format took years to peter off into the abyss.
I hope, for your sakes, that none of you people plunked down the money for an HD-DVD player.

It was sure to win anyway. Now comes the wait for Blu-Ray to become as standard as a regular CD.
Could take a while..

I thought the same, I watched a HD movie and wasn't impressed. Overtime I watched more HD movies (blu-ray) and I went to watch a DVD.
I saw the difference. Same thing happened with this generation of games, hadn't played on any of my PS2 games for a while. I put in Metal Gear Solid 3 and noticed a huge difference.

Funny thing is, things that don't sell don't stay on the market for long. Besides, if you go by quality alone, Blu-Ray still has a slight advantage with larger storage capacity.

There is no winner in the High-Def DVD war. The average consumer continues to buy normal DVDs at a lower price and the companies backing both formats are losing out.
As an informed consumer, I am perfectly happy with the quality of my DVDs and download rentals (iTunes, Xbox Marketplace) and I see no reason to buy an HD player in the next few years.
Especially with the US economy taking a slight downturn, it will be hard for the average customer to justify buying a fancy DVD player when the mass media keeps screaming "Don't buy" regarding both machines.

I don't really care, I mean they'll probably come out with something much bigger and better in a couple of years anyway. I'm sticking with DVDs because I don't want to spend $60 for one DVD. Thats just outrageous.
Yea, I farm Anal Penguins. Do something about it.

Except for Blu-Ray's larger storage capacity.
I still use DVD's
Also, expect DVDs to be gradually phased out of the mainstream view over the next five years.
Remember back in 1996 when they said DVDs could never displace VHS? These days, 98% of all movie sales come from DVDs.

Is it really nessasary that we buy a new player, an HD-TV and new DVD's just to see a very tiny difference in picture? I think that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD should both fuck off, DVD's are still fairly new, I don't want to be obsolete this quickly!

this is a good thing for alot of people
A. even if you got an hd-dvd player the hd movies will all be $5 - $10 soon so you can enjoy cheap hd movies
B. ps3 now has a bankable feature
C. current blu-ray owners will get the movies the missed (transformers)
D. now the hd technology can progress faster and become cheaper
Using grammar in a forum is like having 22 inch rims. sure its nice and pretty, but its more for showing off than anything else.

We really see the difference with HD and regular when you watch cartoons. In HD you don't see the video compression.
My signature was old so I changed it.

Yeah, but you still need to buy an HD-DVD player, so what's the point of buying one if there are only a few movies you can buy?
B. ps3 now has a bankable feature
I don't even know what that is, explain yourself further.
C. current blu-ray owners will get the movies the missed (transformers)
Wait, why the fuck would anybody want to watch that piece of shit?
D. now the hd technology can progress faster and become cheaper
Better yet, we can just stick with DVD's since they're identical to Blu-Ray. With Blu-Ray you're forced to buy and HD-TV just to see the small difference in them. Plus Blu-Ray has a lot of stupid features, when all I want to do is watch the fucking movie!

Just a side note; If you live in the US, you actually have to get an HDTV before either before or during 2009 if you want to continue watching TV at all, because analog television is being phased out, and replaced with digital, high-definition signals. This, of course, assumes that you don't already have an HDTV.

It's worth mentioning that I still use VHS for home taping. I have many DVDs, but I still have my old video player to record shit on.

You don't have to get an HD-TV, you can also get digital cable or satelite instead of getting a new TV. I have American satelite, so I'll still be able to watch all of the channels on my TV. The only ones I wont be able to watch are the American channels on my TV, which has basio cable.

Wait, I just relised that this sounds really confusing. I ment to say that I can still watch any channel I want on the TV that has American satelite.
But my other TV, which only has basic cable, wont show any of the American channles, but will still show the Canadian ones.

I really don't care to much for HD, mostly because (in my opinion) it's a huge waste of money. Sure, you want to feel like you're there, but why shell out $900 bucks for a 90 inch TV when you can get a regular TV with just a tad less satisfaction? As long as my TV has more then one speaker, and isn't black and white, I'm happy with it.

WOOHOO!!
Seems like that PS3 was a good choice after all, even though I used it mainly for games.
For I am and forever shall be... a master ruseman.
