Please, never use the words "musicians" and "rappers" in the same sentence again.

Rap IS music. Rappers ARE musicians.

Really now?

Granted, it's a poetic/ lyrical art. If you can call something like "Shoot 'Em Up" to be poetry, anyway.

Music has harmony, melody, motifs, developments upon that motif.

Rap has word, drum machines, premade synths, and a 2 note maximum melody.

I totally agree with you, words are far more significant to rap than music. But it is still MUSIC,so they are musician. But hey, that's your opinion...

we're getting off topic here...

I don't mean to troll, but it's offensive to me when I have to endure a world where anyone can throw a few samples, a voice track recorded in ten minutes, and some other crap without the least bit of musical knowhow and make a billion dollars off of it. It's a touchy subject, and even if it looks like I'm trolling, it's not for the attention, it's just the honest truth. Ask any music P.H.D or even any Master of Music, and they'll say it. Chances are, they won't even admit it's a poetic art, or that it takes skill.

I think it takes skill to rap, yes. But it is in no way, shape, or form music.

The actual genre of hip-hop IS music, but the actual act of rapping alone is not.

Can we leave it at that? No arguing possible there.

TOMB, you're an idiot, shut up, so, The Roots are not musicians because they're hip-hop? You don't know nothing about hip hop. Secondly, you talk about rap not being poetry because it talks about shooting people, what's death metal about?

Ah... mjttomb... You're so very mistaken. Rap songs, without the lyrics, is music in itself. No matter how many beats there are. And then you add lyrics to it, and it still doesn't change. It's still music.

And it takes a lot longer then "Ten minutes" to record a single track. And not all Rap is about "Shootin' People Up". Look at Weird Al, for example.

Let me rephrase my statement. There's a good deal of good rap in the world, and mostly, the good rap comes from places like ng. I'm referring to mainstream rap like soulja boy when I refer to it being not music. Early rap was very musical, but it seems that as gangsta rap became more prominent, musical elements became more scarce.

Sorry if I came off as a dick, I was just stating what I believe to be true.

So, sorry.

Look underground, my friend.

But I'm sorry as well for wasting space in this thread and coming off as a dick as well, I got caught up in the moment and yada yada yad. And yes, Soulja Boy does suck.

Death metal is about so much more than shooting people... In fact, I think you won't even find a song about shooting people within that genre. It's too mainstream for death metal, there's got to be something more gruel involved. ;-)

Tomb, don't be a prick. I don't LIKE the new, mainstream rap ("gangsta"... sure... whatever floats yer boat), and often I feel it's not really music, yes, but that doesn't mean I'll go bashing every rapper in town, saying "zomg, u dont maek muzik! U = t3h suXX0rz." Everyone's entitled to their opinion. If you dislike hip-hop that much because it's "not music", go ahead and try to help this guy; turn it into music. (Old school and underground hip-hop are cool though. More of a metal kind of guy, but I can listen to it and even enjoy it ;-))

By the way, I am interested in helping. I've only made one hip-hop-ish song, ever, though. Is there any way I could contribute anyway? (I actually kind of cheated with that song as well, took an FL demo of "Try Again" and mixed it with Hyrule Temple, so...)

... No, but I did see a blue Prius!

Conian -> Welcome to the chaos that is my mind, would you like to take the detour?

Sounds like fun. Reminds me of hte old days with Run DMC and Aerosmith. But combining the two is a really artsy type of thing, albeit on a small scale.

Now to the subtopic which tomb brought up and got called out on. ANYBODY with a high degree in music will be quick to point out the faults in your arguments. Most notably, Bobby Mcferrin, who just so happens to be one of the most prolific music instructors right here in San Francisco. A good piece of hip-hop, he said, will take about a week to compose and partially master. The rest is up to the individual artist as to the direction he/she wants to take with the base song. I'd go further in my notes to add to what I've got pertaining to that day (10-24-1998, that's when I got to use my first synthesizer ^_^), but I know I'll run out of room due to the character limit.

Back on topic. As I said, it's a fun project to undertake. Keep us up to date through your news posts ^_^.

You know what I mean, I meant gangsta rap (when it's done wrong btw) is all about murder and drugs and stuff, and death metal and stuff like that, is all about murder and suicide and stuff, not saying I dislike rock and metal, just saying...

If something takes about a week to come up with and produce, that's actually quite intense, especially if you're looking at a genre like hip-hop, which has fairly minimalistic music as a background for the rapping, otherwise it distracts the listener from the lyrics. So... I guess he's actually saying it's music and that you actually need talent for it. It's not a case of being against or praising, IMHO.

The point of that lecture was to establish the need for real talent as far as the instrumentals are concerned. Mr. McFerrin is neither for or against hip-hop, but he recognizes the need for talent. Timbaland sees him as inspiration for his tracks, which is why his material takes so long to produce. So don't look at it as a "for/against" thing, but rather... how should I put this... ah, the proverbial needle in the haystack. Wading through tons of crap to find that one golden piece ^_^

This topic is swanky. The argument attracted me, but the offer piques my interest.

Give me a beat, and I will give you a stanky bass line that WILL make you dance.
