I have been able to since I was a child due to piano lessons starting at age 6. But What I really want to find out is if there is anyone on newgrounds who makes well recieved audio tracks who cant. If you can't read music, please, speak up.
Personally I got my money on Hania, chances are she just uses loops. Voice..err... Loops...

I think the majority of us can't. I can't read music very well myself. I know a few basics, but I don't really need to be able to read it right now.

I can read music. It takes me a while if you want me to play it back on piano, but, yeah, I can read music. Been learning piano since I was 10/11. Sight reading was worst for me, I learned my pieces by memory, but I still know the notation etc.

I can sight read just fine but I can thank high school band for that. In percussion we do a lot of sight reading kinda stuff with the top band at our high school to practicefor contest when we actually DO sight read and perform a piece. It's kinda fun.

I can't really read "music". I know the basics as well but theory isn't all. I can read tabs though (which isn't very hard of course). I'm with B0unc3 about the rest, it just comes when listening. Music isn't all about theory.

Oh yeah, I play da guitarzzz.

I cant read music at all, i know note's name's and stuff, but i learn my piano pieces by ear.
For my FLstudio stuff, i just improvise something, or use an idea ive made up on the piano earlier on.

This is really blowing my mind. I don't know how you guys can write good music, and I've listened to alot of your stuff, it's in much good taste :P, without being able to count beats and stuff. I understand the whole play by ear philisophy( I play timpani, it's all about the ear on those suckers), but I'm still suprised you can write beats like that. I constantly find my self counting and taping rythmns on my desk, "a-4-e-and-a-1." Do you ever write anything other than 4/4? I wrote a 7/8 piece a while back and I don't see how someone without a background in music could hack that.

Personally the only other thing I've tried is 4/3. I've always been trying to make dance oriented music so I haven't really experimented that much.

I think like this, who cares if someone knows theory? If his shit sounds good it's all legit XD

Technically I can't read music. I know the notes, modes, inversions, a good deal of theory, notation symbols for instruments and a good deal of other stuff. Started fixing that, I swear i'm on it, self learning piano. I'll consider myself music literate when I can sight read music at a speed at least 60bpm.

Right now if you showed me a score and asked me to play it i'd break down and insult your mother.

On a unrelated note I was fortunate enough to see a score by Charles Irves... that man was on CRACK. I swear on CRACK!

Aww...what a cutsey smiley.
There's a guy in the dorms here that plays the piano like a MADMAN. You know that scene near the end in "The Pianist" when he's playing the piano for that German officer in an abandoned house? He can play that.
I was like "woahhh...I've gotta record you" and he was like "lol k"

I can read it but takes me a while.. But I find I don't read much music anymore because I spend more time making up new things than playing current music.

I took piano lessons a decade ago, but after that I've forgotten everything I learned, so yeah, ATM I can't read music, all my creations are "randomly made", based upon whatever sounds best.

I can read music, but only guitar scores, cause for some reason the dudes who make guitar scores do it like an octave down or something. Like, the first line in the staff (the E) is an octave lower or higher than the same note on a piano.

Rig, go to youtube and search for Jordan Rudess. That man can play a piano like a madman....

But yeah, I can read music, having a background in the technical aspects of composition has definatly contributed to my digital stuff.

I mean, how often do you hear orchestral bass drum rolls on NG, much less that people knew such existed. I'm sure trilling a wind instrument is equally un noticed, horn rips - I thank band for a lot of my mildly usefull knowledge.

I'm sure that it took a while for people that didnt have a grasp of the way it works to get comfrotable changing time signatures and whatnot. I spent a lot of time in FL trying to figure out how the hell to slur notes.

I can read music. Still in music theory class, though. We just finished Modes, so I'm happy! I still have a long way to go.

I can't really read music very well... Well I play the drums so i can read drum related music, all the way up to timpani... But when you start getting all the notes of different lines... You start to lose me. I can find notes on a piano or something, and I am learning how because i've been playing xylaphone, marimba, and vibraphone in band but yeah... I can read rythms, but not notes.

I read music quite well and on saxophone and bass guitar I can sight read, generally. Too many sharps or flats kills me.

On the other hand, I play guitar, and can sometimes sight read on that, but it has too many strings. But yes I read music quite well, and some of my music is accepted.

I too, learned piano at age 6... my mother forced me to learn a new instrument each year up until the age of 12 and when I hit middle school she told me to choose 3 of the instruments I learned and to pursue them.

I can read any sheet music but I am not good at sight reading (assuming it is a fairly complicated piece). I can pretty much learn to play anything on piano though within a day i'd say (assuming it isn't extremely long).

I used to be able to sight read music pretty well, I played the trumpet, french horn and piano.. but recently I've gotten out of practice. If you asked me to play something, it would take me a bit.. but in time I would remember how. Just because someone doesn't know how to read music, doesn't mean they can't make music. Its all in the mind, not on the page.

You will lol, and you will like it.

I can read music, but it takes me about 5 minutes for like 2 bars if i have to play it by sight only, in the right tempo, note lengths and notes.
if i hear a song on the radio however, i am able to play it back in about the same time on my guitar, and i am able to write the notes down, and in a few hours convert the 'E A E F E..' notes ive written down to a partiture or Tab.
all i know was learned by myself, the only thing i ever learned at school was how to draw the Sol thingy in the beginning of a partiture (the one that is diffrent for bass then guitar).

sorry if all the namings are incorrect, i don't know all the right terms in english.

There's a method to the madness, I promise!!! (...aside from the hardcore drugs)

Sightreading is practically my hobby, it's really fun. I find it easier to read in flat keys for some reason, but all double accidentals are deadly.

I'm still working through the Riemenschneider edition of Bach chorales, though. One obscure clef after the other...
