The producers, including J.J. himself, have said that a lot of their reasoning for keeping the monster, the plot, and even the title secret was to bring some of the mystery back to seeing a movie. Today, people know everything about a movie when they go in to see it, but this wasn't so not too long ago. They want to bring some of that back by keeping everything secret until you actually go into the movie. If there was a viral marketing campaign that revealed the monster, the film would have no point.

We've all just been trained to think that big, splashy genre release must = Internet viral campaign.
