It's not like all other countries are repressive regimes compared to the U.S.There are many countries that still can be great cenetrs for human advancement.

It's just that the U.s. has advanced and progressed to a stage where people can truly express themselves. It is a true liberating society.

Well, I think it needs a lot of work.

The government likes to butt into other people's business and help to fule wars by providing countries with weapons and money.

And the majority of the people don't want to do anything if they see that the government is doing something wrong.

I live in america

Well.....I've only spent a short time in the US and it was (obviously) a tourist trap so I can't really give an accurate depiction on the whole country itself but I'll give it a shot.

The locals are nice, there's plenty of places for people to enjoy themselves ESPECIALLY when your hotel is 150 feet from an indoor shooting range lol

Nice weather, wouldn't want to live there but would love to go there on another vacation. And this time NOT GET SCREWED OVER BY THE FUCKING AIRPORT!!

But the only thing I hate is the alcohol drinking laws. Bunch of communists lol

I give it a 8/10

The united states has one of the most varried climates in the world compared to some other countries, where exactly did you go? because the united states has Deserts, Canyons, Tundras, forests, plains, mountains, beaches, tropical islands [owned by the united states, hawaii mostly] and swamps... In reality the only thing it doesn't have is a rain forest which isn't typically a great tourist attraction.

Yeh well the problem about that is that the US; unlike the UK and many other countries somehow developed into a culture which drinking became an act of recklessness and not of dignity and grace; So you get alot of people turning themselfs into homocidal maniacs under the wheel of a car, and wa-la, you have drinking laws.

I think your confusing the UK with Continental Europe. Americas drinking Culture has it's origins mostly with the Irish and English, who unlike Continental Europe who drink with meals and drink slowly. The British isles countries drink fast and alot. Allthough Americas Drinking Culture has been dumbed down alot by i'ts Continental Ancestory. So it's no way near at the level of Ireland, England or many countries in Northern Europe.

USA I believe it is a good country for the freedom of speech and the economy is in decent shape. The president is alright, has downsides, but alright. And the education is decent also.

One concern is that the US is dependent on fossil fuels. We use more energy than any other country. We need to start focusing on alternate fuels before we run out of them. Once we do, we're fucked.

Thats all.

I don't have anything against America. There seems to be an increase in anti-Americanism though, all across the world. I think a lot of it is due to the war in Iraq, amongst other things. I think it was a mistake for Britain to get involved, but that's not something that I blame America for. I blame the British government. What America does in other countries is of no concern to me. As long as it doesn't have any ill effects in my back yard, I don't really care. Of course, we can still keep trading peacefully with America, which suits us just fine. I don't personally see any reason to be anti-American.

Yet they don't have to make cars into Armored Tanks in ireland or the UK just to compensate for the fact that people INSIST upon getting in the wheel of a car and crashing into every other object.

New York and Florida. And not the bible bashing part of Florida either, the happy roller coaster place filled with foreigners.

I don't care, America's drinking laws are too high and Britains getting that way too which automatically makes them facist and communist.

We have the best colleges, the most productive workers, one of the highest educational attainment rates in the world, we have the most generous population in terms of donations to charity.

Are you serious? America having a good education system? Then why do schools have to sell out to commercial companies to even be able to buy books for their children? Why do we (netherlands) learn SIX different languages at school, and most americans are barely able to write their own language ("OM fukkin Gawd! I c4n pwn u with my english sooo much!")? Believe me, I've met enough Americans, and though their all normal people like the rest of the world, their educational system sucks.

We've been responsible for basically every modern breakthrough in science and medicine in modern history. We're the world's most ethnically diverse major nation, we have the worlds most popular culture in terms of music, movies, and other media. We're the world's oldest democracy, the only country in history to do things like rebuild countries we defeated in war free of charge, allowed them to have democracies, and ask for nothing but plots of land to bury our dead soldiers in return.

Yeah ehm... dude.... You just kinda proved my point.
1) You really haven't made so much scientific progress. Germans, Brittish, Canadian, French and Russian scholars actually did, you just happened to be allied to four out of five of them, so you were quick enough to nick their technologie.

2)The oldest democracy!? Don't make me laugh. I could point back to the french republic in between Louis and Napolean. Or, 200+ years earlier (start independance war: 1584, finished 1648) , the United Dutch Republics, or about 1900 years ealier the Athenian Democracy, or what about the tribal councils?

3) Yeah.... Fucking Britney Spears, you should be proud of pop-culture.....

4)And you are really pushing it with the last bit. You "allow people to have a democracy"!? May I ask if you know how many dictatorships you have installed in order to 'spread democracy'? How about post WWII greece, where the USA supported the Generals' Rule, a brutal dictatorship in wich thousands of people where killed, wich you supported because the elections where won by the communist party, who didn't want an American military base in their country? Or what about the catholic Diem in Vietnam, who apperantly was such a bastard that even the Buddhist Monks and the Commies worked together to get rid of him. And how about South America? And do you really think that what you are doing in Iraq and Afgahnistan is a rebuilding mission? Seriously?

Now, what does America say to me:

a) A propaganda based education system
b) A distorted democracy, in wich people without the majority of votes can still win elections
c) A sense of patriotism bordering almost Nationalism. (As displayed in this thread)
d) A country ruled by money: Coorperations have all power, politicians are there to defend these coorporations.
e) A country 'great' thanks to oppressing others and thanks to war. As a former victim of Brittish colonisation, it's soldiers all over the world are surpringly much like colonists.
f) Enviromental killers. SUV's and McDonalds.
g) Quite a bunch of great rock musicians :D

Oh just another note, along with Russia, America was the last western country to ban slavery.

Oh, and while American presidents have allways been white men, many Islamic Regimes for example have had female presidents.

Probably because the Netherlands is in a very diverse part of the world. Its near languages like English, Deutsch, French, Spanish, and so. The only main languages in the US is English and in the southwest Spanish.
But it is required (at least in my area) to learn two languages.

Yeah ehm... dude.... You just kinda proved my point.

a) A propaganda based education system

Please, I've seen more bias in European news television shows then in a 6th grade essay.
Especially when it comes to America, they love bashing on them Americans.

b) A distorted democracy, in wich people without the majority of votes can still win elections

Thats why its called a democratic republic. Where we vote for the people who are going to put the leader in charge.

And before you bring out that card again, realize that has only happened twice in the history of the US. The first one being with Abraham Lincoln.

c) A sense of patriotism bordering almost Nationalism. (As displayed in this thread)

So being proud is a bad thing?
Maybe thats the big difference with us and other countries, Americans are proud and other countries try to act humble and shamed.

d) A country ruled by money: Coorperations have all power, politicians are there to defend these coorporations.

Thats what capitalism is, and its also the major reason why poor poverty stricken immigrants come running to our country. They get a shit job, their kids go to college and get well payed jobs, and then they move into middle class.

Boom, in two generations a family can do what the previous 10 couldn't because thats why people come to the US.

I don't think you realize what a colonist is.

f) Enviromental killers. SUV's and McDonalds.

Which have spread like wild fire across the world.

Oh just another note, along with Russia, America was the last western country to ban slavery.

Three things, at that time our country was a major agricultural producer. Britain had been throwing slaves at us for a long time, and we they were a large part of our economy. Large plantations were the only place to have slaves.

Besides, its the 21st century, stop looking at the past and try looking into the present. Maybe then other countries will actually realize it isn't 18th century Europe and try to catch up.

many Islamic Regimes for example have had female presidents.

No they haven't.
In fact the first ever women president was appointed a short while ago in a South American country, not sure which though.

Oooh, somebody hasn't studied women leaders.

These are all out of office by now (there are also many others, some in office at the moment):
Sühbaataryn Yanjmaa: prez of Mongolia
Song Qingling (Sung Ch'ing-ling): of China
Dalia Itzik: of Israel (though the Israeli system has the PM above the prez, so they also had Golda Meir as the female PM)

As for Islamic nations:
Megawati Sukarnoptri: Current prez of Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population
Benazir Bhutto: First leader of a Muslim country in 1988 in Pakistan, just died while trying to get reelected.
Khaleda Zia: of Bangladesh (about 90% muslim)
Tansu Çiller: PM of Turkey
Mame Madior Boye: of Senegal (92% Muslim)

I don't think any are "Islamic Regimes" but these are countries that are predominately Muslim.

Except that you didn't look at my post. Switzerland is the oldest according to the source listed, by four times the Americans. They also have Direct Democracy and Representation, not only Representation so it is also MORE democratic.

Yeah indeed, the wealthier the area the better the school, so the poor kids can just fuck off, 'cause they won't get into college, no matter how smart they are?

No, what I am suggesting is this: Because the USA has a high level of technological development, (I admit that) people think they must have a lot of scienctific breackthroughs. The thing is, they don't.

you should be proud of pop-culture.....
Really, can you tell me what major music style that came from the Netherlands? Or any other country that has had the effect of US music styles?

Yeah well, actually that was kinda a joke, partly though. America has had great influence on (rock) music. Credits for that. Though I just meant that modern age popcharts usually feature quite crappy music, like for example Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake types. But that's an unimportant discussion right now

a) A propaganda based education system
Please, I've seen more bias in European news television shows then in a 6th grade essay.
Especially when it comes to America, they love bashing on them Americans.

Unfortunatly, we don't. In the world of dutch/european politics, america is sacred. Perhaps on SOME of the news channels, America is just another countly, just like france, china or azerbeidjan. In wich case, it features honestly pro's and con's. The last one, you don't see very much back in the great USA.

b) A distorted democracy, in wich people without the majority of votes can still win elections
Thats why its called a democratic republic. Where we vote for the people who are going to put the leader in charge.

And before you bring out that card again, realize that has only happened twice in the history of the US. The first one being with Abraham Lincoln.

We also have democracy, in wich we vote for our leaders, instead of voting for who has the right to vote for our leaders.

c) A sense of patriotism bordering almost Nationalism. (As displayed in this thread)
So being proud is a bad thing?
Maybe thats the big difference with us and other countries, Americans are proud and other countries try to act humble and shamed.

Being proud is one thing, being overly proud is another. The last one started two official worldwars allready.

d) A country ruled by money: Coorperations have all power, politicians are there to defend these coorporations.
Thats what capitalism is, and its also the major reason why poor poverty stricken immigrants come running to our country. They get a shit job, their kids go to college and get well payed jobs, and then they move into middle class.

Boom, in two generations a family can do what the previous 10 couldn't because thats why people come to the US.

a) yes, that is what capitalism is
b) no. They get a shit job. They live either on the streets or in crappy neighbourhoods. Their kids get no education, because, as you said, crappy neighbourhood = crappy education. The kids get either a crappy job, or go and become criminals. Yay.

f) Enviromental killers. SUV's and McDonalds.
Which have spread like wild fire across the world.

Couldn't have said it better myselve.

What are you talking about? If a kid is smart he has a better chance of getting into college then a wealthier kid of equal intelligence. Because the government and (sometimes) the college is willing to help foot the bill.

You can thank the 10 year old kids with shitty taste in music for that.
But with all the crap being made now, its only karma something great is about to come out.

Unfortunatly, we don't.

Well I dont regularly watch European news. But usually when watching Canadian, UK, and other European English news casts they have negative views about the US.

We also have democracy, in wich we vote for our leaders, instead of voting for who has the right to vote for our leaders.

Really you would have to look at our history about why we have this system to figure out why, and it does make sense, but the truth is that in todays modern culture we don't need it but people are so threatened by change it wont be changed any time soon.

b) no. They get a shit job. They live either on the streets or in crappy neighbourhoods. Their kids get no education, because, as you said, crappy neighbourhood = crappy education. The kids get either a crappy job, or go and become criminals. Yay.

I guess you would know, because obviously you've gone through it.
Seriously though, that is what often happens. Because people expect to be given things when they come here, and when they realize they still have to work for it they give up and accept what little cash they can get.

Or they can work hard and accept whats given to them to work out of their shit hole situation. Because lack of funding does not mean you will get shit grades and shit education.
You still get text books, and most cities have libraries. If a child was truly motivated they could go anywhere in life. But unfortunately many kids growing up in poor cities are given the choice of gangs and drugs. Both of which can offer quick and easy cash. A kid growing up in a wealthy area usually doesn't have that choice, and they are actually expected to go to college.

Yeah, and the point is....?

We had a reason.

While I'm going to try my best to stay the fuck out of this discussion from this post on, I just have to say that the Netherlands abolished slavery in 1863, a mere two years before the US (as a whole) and two years after Russia. And I wouldn't use the term "democracy" to describe the republic prior to the reforms of the 19th century, since peasants had no say whatsoever about who was to be sent to the Staten-Generaal as a provincial representative I'd rather call it an oligarchy or aristocracy and the stadhouder was a de facto monarch rather than an elected sovereign. William III even led a personal union with England at one point, which indicates that they were generally seen as monarchs.

I thought we were talking about oldest as in longest-running.

And, you haven't reacted to the other points, wich you stated and I have more or less tried to prove wrong.

What are you talking about? I never reacted to any of your other points, and never stated anything you tried to prove wrong.

our country is wack, our corrupt government caters to the concerns/whims of corporations, we have an incompetent coke-head president, there have been far too many scandals/controversies for me to respect the office, we treat our own planet like shit, we treat our own ppl like shit, our country has the fattest ppl, as for being a democracy, HA!
capitalism and democracy are NOT synonymous.
its not even a true democracy its turned more into a republic, in which everything is controlled by the same ppl so it doesn't even matter who wins the election

i like living here but i hate the ppl in charge.
