I think they realize they are new, I don't think calling them a "n00b" increases their awareness. If anything you are going to do one of two things: A) Alienate them to the point where they just leave (and anyone with any internet experience can tell you that a board without a steady influx of new people is doomed to die), or B) they feel afraid to ask questions and then just do a bunch of other stupid things because they never really understood things. And yeah I know you can learn a lot by watching, but you are still limited to events and circumstances that actually are seen while you happen to be online and even then if you ask why something happened you get called a "n00b" on this board. Newbie bashing is never a positive thing. If they are being pricks, then nail them for being pricks, not for being new. If "noob" represents newbie, and you use it as an insult, then anyone who is new feels attacked every time you use it. So it just builds a general resentment and a feeling that new people are unwelcome.

to be honest, post count doesnt determing n0bbishness at all. there are huge newbies who have high post counts nowadays. if anything, level is a factor. you can disagree, but from what ive noticed there are only a handful of n00bs who are high level users. and also, their level does reflect the amount of time theyve spent here. so does sign up date, but no one ever bothers to check that because OGM POUPULARITEE SCAMM!!!1!!!

also, theres a difference between a site newbie and a BBS newbie. but thats a whole other rant.

bashing n00bs is a part of human nature. some are nice, some are not. the ones that can take the bashing are worthy of being on this forum, if not, they should probably just leave.

ever since mankind has existed, they have excluded the new ones, make them feel bad. as they gain senority, they get treated better. it's a part of us, and that's how things go. it's in schools, forums, politics, just plain simple life. if you cant take the bashing, then fucking leave. no one wants you. some people will say that the people that bash n00bs are immature, but it's simply human nature, and it's also human nature for someone to be friends with them.

though technology, style, and society change, some things never change, human nature. it's been happeneing for ages, and we should accept it.

edn.

I have never read such drivel.

Schools: those who pick on other kids are labelled as "Bullies", at least where I come from. Even if newcomers in schools are picked on, they do at least have the rest of their year behind them. There isn't the same sort of backup on the forums, because it's "Every (wo)man for himself" on here.

Forums: well, you've just proved my point - your closed-mindedness is exactly the kind of reply I was expecting in response to the topic.

Politics: so, let me get this straight - you think that when some new politician comes to the floor to make a perfectly valid point about something serious and all of his/her peers get up and leer, "Newbie!!!"? Please.

My main gripes about the attack on new members is that:

1. People who can make perfectly valid points are deterred from making them because they don't see the point in getting ridiculed for doing so.
2. When you get to the forum listing and read the first few topics and all of those topics contain some comment about "n00bs", it doesn't make for very interesting reading.

Grow up.

I'd rather have dickheads leave than people who just aren't willing to put up with consistently being treated like shit.

I know a few people who I introduced to Newgrounds who stopped coming here because of that. There was one by the alias of seasickcrocodile, and after being called a "noob" in a political debate without the offender offering anything else to argue her points, she decided that Newgrounds was not a place she wanted to be a part of. It's sad really. All you guys could have had another avid female poster on the Newgrounds BBS. God knows that's all you guys really want anyways... =P

That's a nice idea and all, but I think most of them would miss it and then get flamed 10 times worse for missing it.

People like popular stuff so they always use the word "n00b" coz it is so damn popular over the NG, and maybe some other places !!! As you mentioned, it's just a sheep logic, all about following the trends !!!

well i still stand by what i sad about n00b just being an insult like any other. if someone cant take being called a newbie, then they sure as hell wont appreciate being called fuckface or any other common insult.

people just need more self esteem. wusses will always be wusses unless they make a stand and do something for themselves.

If you ask me, the word n00b means "I'm a bigger loser than you." It shows that you have an ego over how much you visit a damn website, which really isn't much to brag about.

In short i'd like to summarize what i want to say with a simple paragraph that i think you should read.

My first topic was "How to i make a preloader" or something to that effect. Even though i myself have said 'Newb' or 'Noob' or something to that effect, it doesn't matter. You may find it hypocritical but its not. Its just not being true to your roots. Me refraining from insulting people who ask dumb questions is like asking me to not counsel/make fun of asshats at the skatepark who aren't as good as me and don't wait there turn/get in my way.

I usually don't call new people noobs. Really.

But i'll do it if some new guy asks an unusually dumb question (i don't call someone a noob based on there signup date/level icon or whatnot.)

I used to call people n00bs, but it's much more fun to go along with their insults and pretend that they hurt you. Or just call them an asshat and move on :o

I do what I can to help answer the questions defined by the newcomers in a good manner. Branding others "Noobs" for their questions is not of equal prejuidice.

What's sad really is that you're friend lets one dickhead make them stop coming to newgrounds. They never even made it through the n00b cut, they are sad.

Actually, she came here looking for intelligent conversation. I think that was Mistake #1. I guess that after she "debated" with that guy, she decided that she should look elsewhere for a forum that would suit her better. And she did. I believe she is now a regular on a site called Going-Nowhere.net. Looks interesting too. Check it out sometime...

I often use the word n00b as a tag, like male or female, young or old. I think people who discriminate on whether or not you spend as much time on a website as them are just stupid. They should also bear in mind, that I could call a lv 1 a n00b, but a lv 20 would laugh in my face. It all depends on your perspective.
