It's called branding, and yes it does work.
Tips: - No numbers - Avoid arbitrary capitalization - Don't use words that are existing brands of widely recognized products - Generally, six characters or less will be easiest to remember (ex: Zerok, Maus, fli). You can get away with more if you use alliteration (ex: poxpower, bigbadron).
