RIP Pakistan Democracy.
It has been clinically dead since Musharraf seized power eight years ago, this is like punching a body that's about to be defibrillated. On the bright side, this might earn the PPP some sympathy votes in the upcoming elections (if Musharraf doesn't postpone or annul them). If they manage to find another powerful leader from among their ranks they might even save the country from a pandemonium that only extremists will profit from. But the country's situation is of course far more likely to worsen.
RIP Bhutto.

I'm not sure which is sadder... the death of one of the greatest hopes for democracy in Pakistan... or the fact that I am completely unsurprised by it. After several previous attempts... if they continued, one was bound to get her.
Tis better to sit in silence and be presumed a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

I can't see why everyone's getting teary-eyed, considering Bhutto was no friend of the West. Did anyone give a shit when Jerry Falwell went?

Disastrous.
But they don't know who did it.
Did Musharraf kill off his last opponent, or was it the Islamic extremists?
Either way, it's the Pakistani people who will suffer.

Probably these guys. The BBC says that it was a suicide attack, and I don't think that Musharraf is a Hirohito who instills the sort of respect in his subjects that makes them willing to blow themselves up for him.

Don't the extremists always claim responsibility for these attacks?
I'll wait for one such claim before I fully believe it.

Al-Qaeda have apparently "claimed responsibility".
I'm sure that lot just sit around in their boxers playing Xbox waiting for something shit to happen and then give the press a ring - "yeah that were us lol".

I would have to say that the people who did it were those who do not care for democracy, but for tribal rule. That is what Pakistan will remain as long as they have a say in it.

Well Pakistan is more of a military dictatorship than tribal rule. Aren't you thinking of Afghanistan instead?

At 9:57 am my Journalism teacher sent us all an e-mail with a link to CNN, I just started bawling, this is horrible! All hope is officially lost in the mid-east. It may be in the title, but R.I.P. Mrs. Bhutto.
I'm too 'tarded to get a picture in here, so I'll write something instead.

Ha ha, you were actually surprised. Also,I though Pakistan was considered a South Asian nation, and doesn't the middle east usually refer to western Asia and north Africa?

I think the people who killed her would like to have tribal rule, but there are also those who wish for military dictatorship. The two types of rule run hand in hand, anyways.

It is but under certain UN guidelines they would categroize it to be in the middl east.Although genrally the line is drawn between Afghanistan and the Pakistani border.

I am very sad at the Martyrdom of Bhutto. However, I do remain hopeful about the prospects of Pakistani Democracy.
Yes a significant part of the population thinks legitimacy (even democratic legitimacy) comes from the point of a gun or a suicide bomb and not the ballot box. However, I have a female classmate who is over here learning about Democracy and plans to return to her country.
Today may be black, but that does not mean the sun will never shine again.

Well, it is sad, but basically it was bound to happen, I mean when a lot of people want to kill you, it is generally a good idea to not wave from the sunroof. But this potentially is as bad for Musharaf as it is for the PPP. If the PPP can rebuild it's leadership, they can use the wave of sympathy votes to swing victory their way. As long as Musharaf doesn't decide to "postpone the elections in light of the tragedy." which I would never put beyond him.

You can't compare the two--
Bhutto was intelligent, moderate, and to a huge extent-- The Last Hope.
At least-- for the Democracy of America (not in Bush's way) that keeps both Pakastani tradition and peace.
She fought for Pakastani women's rights...
She fought against the Taliban...
Plus, she had that "lovable" factor that not much people have.
Okay--granted that she had a few contraversies in the past, but I think the pale in comparrison to what she did and was going to do for Pakistan.

To be fair though.
The chances of her every bringing her corrupt form of democracy to power were about as likely as Chavez to praise the US.
She was mearly another player in the game for political power, one that didn't last.

I was rooting for her too.
I can't remember which thread, but I posted about how good it would be if she became the leader of Pakistan. Because although she was western-friendly and wanted to defeat radical Islamists like Musharraf, she actually had a lot of political support from the people of Pakistan, unlike Musharraf.
Yay, Obama won. Let's thank his supporters:
