Is it really as "amazing" as the media portrays it to be?
I don't know anyone that owns one, to be honest.
People own it through consoles, much like most Blu ray players are owned through playstation 3s.
I'm thinking of getting the HD-DVD player for the 360. I'm not sure yet.

I always thought it had it built in, i was very dissapointed when i found out id have to buy some stupid shit for my 360 for it to be able to play HD.
This is the stupid thing
I didn't really get the whole HD thing till I went to Best Buy one day and they had a comparison thing. The picture is a lot clearer, and you can see it on things like sports, and shows with people and stuff. It looks like you're right where whatever you're watching is, it's awesome. It honestly made me want to get one, and I used to think it was really stupid.
Don't even have, nor want, HD TV yet.
I understood the jump from VHS to DVD, but HD-DVD and Blu Ray is just stupid. I'll get it when it's necessary.
betamax vs vhs all over again except no one cares and they both suck
It´s gonna piss me off big time when HD-DVD or Blu-ray is standard and my 200+ DVD collection will be out of date and worthless >:(

Me neither. It seems they are, so far, highly overrated . . .

I guess I'll have to agree.
But I still think it's useless.
And what's even more useless, is that eventually, we'll have two 'standards'; Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.
Fact is, however, that HD-DVD's can contain, for now, for up to 250 GB's of space, while Blu-Ray discs (only) contain up to about 100 GB's.
So, basically, It's just a faster and bigger version of a DVD.
And even more basically, doesn't that mean that when a movie is small enough, you can use the rest of the space on a DVD for extra image quality? And up to HD?
It's probably like HDTV's. They look so fuzzy in the store. :(
Please disregard the above post.
I recently got HDTV as provided by direcTV, and it's quite excellent. Planet Earth series, all sports programs, and 'How It's Made' 'How it's Done' are all fantastic.
I find myself watching stuff in HD I maybe would consider skipping otherwise. It's good with the right programs.
Sometimes it's shitty, etc.

Heh, yeah. That's definitely one of the things that made me not want to get it. I considered maybe getting an HD-DVD player, but then I found out there were two competing types, so I didn't because I didn't know which was better. And I also really didn't see the quality difference yet, so I assumed it was an overrated new type of DVD and they could have just applied the technology to regular DVD's instead of starting their own thing, a small advance. Like the advance from 8-track tapes to cassettes.
I'm definitely not in a hurry to get a Blu-ray or HD-DVD any time soon, but in a couple years, when it's less hyped about and there's some new SuperHD-DVD and Red-Ray's that everyone's getting, maybe the price will drop, and I can totally see myself buying one then.

Not really. Both players can play DVDs. They even make them look better by upscaling the image quality.

Where did you hear that? I thought HD-DVDs carry up to 30 GBs in Dual Layer while Blu-rays get 50 GBs in Dual Layer.
Anyway, I think Blu-Ray has better technology. And there are more movies for them than HD-DVD.
i own the 360 hddvd player, it's amazing actually.
the dvd's are quite expensive though.

I own one, it's much better than a DVD but not worth an extra $350 or whatever.

I don't. I hear blu-ray is better though.
I think...I hate... dick.

Agreed.
Although I really weren't there when the 8-track tapes advanced to cassettes, the 'revolutionary' advance from tapes (and floppy's) to CD's was pretty usefull.
Though I really don't know what use it is to have high-capacity DVD's.
Better image quality, hooray.

Heh. Red-ray's.
You know that's basically the same as normal DVD's, don't you?
They switched to Blu(e) rays, because that's way more powerfull, thus needing a smaller ray to burn on a disc, thus leaving more space for eacht ray.

I thought I read it in a magazine, and on a pretty reknown Dutch tech-site.
I'm not really sure though =/

Well, eventually, this difference will fade.
I just don't know the real difference between the two.
I mean, both offer HD-quality gaming, video, etc...
Both have a much higher capacity, if what you say is correct, of around 50 GB's.
Still, that's pretty much the only difference, and I'm not sure what causes the difference in the amount of storage between the two.
I guess I'll stick to DVD for now.
More reliable, and with Blu-ray discs and HD-DVDs there'll be a lot of space unused.
hd only looks really good on medium sized tvs. Get too big and then the pixels start to show again. Still... Planet Earth. Can't have it any other way besides Blu-ray.

i cant name a single person that does say a hd dvd player GOD LEARN ENGLISH OR I KILL U IN HOUSE

No, people own Blu-rays through consoles, but you have to buy an add-on if you want to play HD-DVDs on a console.
Zing!
@ OP: No, HD-DVDs are about as overrated as the Wii.
; Once again, Zing!
Even though I have a 360 (meaning I can get a cheap player) they're still around 500 bucks. Than you gotta get a TV that costs 1 grand, than you have to get a $700 sound system to fully enjoy HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
I don't wanna pay that much for something that isn't really that much different. Nor does anyone else, that is why the only person I know who has a HD player is my friend who happens to own a PS3. And guess what: he only has one Blu-Ray movie for it.
*Raises hand*
I have an HD-DVD, a DVD, and a Blue Ray Player.
and Unless you have an HD TV They are not really all that great.
I have an HD-DVD player but I don't have a HDTV.

Well, you have to remember that you need not only an HD Player, but an HDTV AND an HD-DVD disc.
I think...I hate... dick.
