Definition of religion

a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

Well what do you know, I just gave the best reason for Buddhism to be a religion, no need to give 4 more

The eightfold path and the belief of the original budhha (as well as all budhass in some sects) as deities make it a religion, and those are just off of the top of my head.

I've always thought of it as "Religion Lite" or something of that nature, because it is a lot more philosophical than "religion" per se.....

Cool stuff nonetheless though. Christians would do good to look into Buddhism as well, the two are pretty comparable.

Neither. Introduction of "Hitler was a Buddhist" comment and thread devolves into another WWII "America did more than your crappy country" thread.

(I think I just won the thread).

My best friend grew up both Catholic and Buddhist. As he grew up, he and his brother were offered the choice on what to believe. They chose Buddhism.....can't say I blame em.....

To Asians before they were familiar to these crappy middle eastern religions where everyone has to do what the priest says, there was no difference between philosophy and religion so really its just a difference in definition that you have a problem with.

I hope what you say isn't true, wanting to kill people who insist Buddhism is a religion.
Well, Buddhism takes off from Hinduism. Buddhism (my information may be inaccurate) does not concentrate on deities as much as Hinduism and focuses more on being a good person, and believes in an afterlife (by that I mean reincarnation.)
That's pretty much what religions focus on -someone to worship and an afterlife, with some "be a good person" rules.

BTW, Christianity has no place in Buddhist affairs, and the Buddhists should stay clear of negative Christian influences.

But still. Secularism is the way to go, and Buddhism is a pure religion, Christianity is not. And 'anyone who thinks otherwise is a neocon. '

if you allow an impure religon to 'learn about' a pure religon, you run the risk of a sycretism, and buddhism is far less simple to disprove as a pile of lies and slander than chrisitanity; it's for the best that the two religons remain separate.

Isn't it? I've always thought of it as a "Religion Expansion Pack". It's basically compatible with most religions if you skip the nontheistic view, which isn't necesarily a quintessential part of their philosophy anyway. Still, religions tend to get pretty messy when they mix so probably it's better to leave them just the way they are and leave the mixing to a reducted group of ageing hippies.

Atheist buddhism is as much of a contradiction to itself as the annoying christian creationists. the Goals and objectives of buddhism, as well as karma and the middle path are in direct defiance to the explanation of why we are here, the fact that we exist to exist, and for this reason we continue to exist.

Buddhism offers individuals a path to mental and spiritual harmony [The spirit is a fake entity] but doesn't explain how that helps, when you die, you cease to exist, and the world continues existing to exist, and for this reason, it continues to exist.
