My entry.

Finally someone else who believes authenticity is more important in this contest than "teh awesome beats and sounds." :]

The atari/NES authenticity should definitely be a judging category in this contest.

Yeah, that's important. I'm using a bunch of VST's that I d-loaded, so hopefully they're good. I've finally learned some music theory, so maybe that'll help with writing chords to accompany the melodies and such. Best of luck to all!

MAGICAL 8BIT PLUG! All of the other plugins are kinda poopy.

http://chiptunes.free.fr//music_kit.zip <- use that for percussion!

Well, I submitted my first entry. And it was for this contest. Hopefully it is 8-bit sounding. I worked about an hour on it. I tried really hard, but I'm not quite sure if I got it just right. I just got to wait to be approved and then I'll post the link in here =]

I didn't use FX, cuz I didn't know if they used them in 8-bit. For the drums, I just made them plain and... loud.

Generally I would think not, there are only four channels in the original Atari chiptunes, and all are normally monotone without reeverb.

Reverb: No. Basically those games with reverb mimicks had delay and release.

drums: gameboy and nes allowed wav samples imported into low qualities. As for snares and hihats, a lot of chiptune uses noise. I posted a link to a bunch of gameboy drum samples earlier.

One good trick is to run it through a highpass filter - it'll sound like it's coming from a tiny speaker.

I've managed to get a decent drum loop out of it. only uses two sounds, but minimal drums sounds more like 8-bit I think.

Also- Covers! 8-bit covers of Christmas songs.
I don't get it... the way your instruments sound is decided by the judges, so if you use unoriginal notation, it's like you didn't have to do any real composing at all >:( I call it lazy!
Original Christmas tune ftw!
I actually composed my song, and it fits with the VG style even without 8-bit instruments and it sounds like Christmas because of the feel of it, not because it's an already existing tune. Come on people, LJCoffee mentioned something earlier on in this thread called "artistic interpretation".
I think this competition would turn out pretty average if it were all just remakes of Christmas carols, how boring would that be to judge! And would it really be worth a prize?

My two cents, you know they be true.

Is there a place where you can download '8-bit sounding' generators? Sytrus sounds too real and advanced to be computer-game-like. If not, which generators are best to use?

Alright, here's some stuff to get you started! These are VST plugins that work well in FL Studio. Sorry if I can't help everyone, wish that I could :)

-Atari VST
-Realistic Atari sounds, have fun!!!

-Tweakbench
-Tweakbench offers some VST's that are realistic to nintendo gameboy sounds. I would suggest triforce and toad, but look at all the other VST's, you never know :D

-Anything specific? I'd be happy to look it up! I'm sick at the moment, so I'll be at home writing music and doing any homework for AP class (hate and love relationship lol).
