Who uses Garageband here at NG? Dec. 4th, 2007 @ 09:55 PM Reply

I have created ALL 26 of my my songs using Garageband and I finnaly realize that it is the best free program out there. (Will... it is free with the mac you buy depending on what type of mac you buy) And I am curious... who else uses Garageband? if the people who use garageband share eachothers songs... I am sure that everybody will be majorly surprised at the originality out there.

BUT WAIT THERES MORE!

There is a program... a 400$ program... but it makes music the MOST FREAKING BEST THING EVER.. This program is epic AND I MEAN IT!!! It is called

Logic Studio

http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/

Check it out, it is used like Garageband and I recommend getting it for Christmas.

Garage band is a void of creativity. Go get a real DAW like FL, Reason, Cubase, etc etc.

Besides, Audacity is free and MUCH better than GarageBand.

Well, seeing that you obviously don't realize the abbilities of Garageband, I recommend trying it out for yourself! I mean, how would I be creative with my songs if it wasn't for Garageband? But, I do want to try out FL studios just because I want to see how it is different. But I seriosuly doubt it is better than garageband from what I have heard about it and how not many people can use it to it's fullest capacity.

I tried using garage band. I didn't like it, it kept on wanting me to use some default audio clips, and I couldn't get a decent piano roll. fruity loops is by far better, for what I have experienced, sure it may take a little before you know the ins and outs of it, and when you say "not many people can use it to it's fullest capacity." That, to me, is a good thing, it means you require skill, you need to have an understanding of music to use FL, you create stuff from next to nothing.

I would never demote myself to GarageBand. The reason "...not many people...use [FL Studio] to it's fullest capacity" is because it's so jam-packed with plentiful audio wonders. There are so many little things to make your audio unique. It's great. Sure, GarageBand may have the principle of mixing music and loops, but it doesn't not nearly achieve the depth FL has. When you realize this I can guaruntee you that you will want to rush to your nearest Guitar Center (as I did) and purchase FL Studio.

Man. I should get paide for that. I'm practically doing their advertising for them.

Gar(b)ageBand being the best program? Doubt it- a whole lot. I used GarageBand the first half a year after deciding to go music. And I must say the workflow is absolutely horrible (for me)- I just recently found out how to change the quantize value- maybe I'd use it better then- the synths are limiting the fuck out of the creativity, and the way you can't automate more than pan and volume

I could go on for ages

That's just my experience anyway

Logic is more in the league of awesome thou- I had a defect copy of 7th that I had to return, so I bet my cock I'm getting that 8th for christmas

Gar(b)ageBand indeed. I hate that program. It's such a load of bollocks. So bollocks I've refused to use it more than the twice I ever have.

And if anyone on here hasn't heard of Logic already, then they should go die. Since it's THE industry standard studio software. (I'm actually making a DnB track in it, and it's going rather nice ;))

And for the guy who said Audacity is better than GarageBand. I lol'd for even seeing that kind of comparison.

best program? lawlz. I use it, but if I could afford to use another program I would. Sure you can do more with it than most people care to think, but it takes a while, a lot of circumventing and creative problem solving. My guess is that you use a lot of presets. I'll look into your songs, but I doubt that they're any good. As far as I'm concerned you're just advertising yourself.

Yep. Presets ahoy. Samples like crazy. I hate to break it to you, but you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to audio programing. You're just like every other kid out there who thinks they know how to make music just because you can slap a few samples together in a free program. Sorry kid.

Garage band can actually be used very easily, quickly and has a lot of capabilities. I do however recomend logic pro above it though

Yes, Logic Pro does cost a lot of money, but Logic STUDIO which is the sam thing but even better, is the best program I have ever found out there. You could go to apple.com, and search for it and read the reviews.

Isn't it just a simple sequencer/editor? Like MixCraft?

Made simple and easy so anyone can use it- yeah, pretty much the Apple philosophy

It's more than an audio editor though, but that's the primary thing I use it as since I have a better thing now (but that's me)

Simplicity is always good, its certainly easier to organize things in MixCraft than it is in Audacity, however Audacity has more options as far as effects go, but whatever, more programs = more <3.

GarageBand would be better with effects, also they're actually real-time and not just affecting waveform- plus you can add all kinds of thirdparty AU's and some vst's and shit

Logic's been around for ages man where you been?

Just download it, they make so much freaking money it's sick they can charge that much for what is essentially a patched version of old software. I bit more VST activity and a few bolts tightened.

I still think Sony Acid Pro is the best, the most reliable, the most user-friendly, the least CPU used.

Pfft.

Being as morbidly retarded as I am, I never fully understood the capabilities of Garageband (though, I also don't own a midi cord. . . ) and to be honest, it isn't that user-friendly. Also, I find the Apple band VST's (or whatever they're called) to be of rather inferior quality.

admittedly garage band is as entry level useer friendly as FL, this is from my expriences from uni. Me being Cubase and all just looking down on it. What you have to remember though is it is basically Logic but in nursery school format. Thats it. Easy, simple to use, some decent editing and midi facilities. But you grow up and the toilets are bigger. For a Mac user who has never done DAW there is now better introdction. PC alternatives such as Magix or Cool Edit fail in comparision.

Stupid people don't realize the capabilities of garageband. You discredit its ability for originality because a few retards use loops.

The people who think it sucks obviously didn't take much time to learn the program.

It took me months of experimenting to even scratch the surface when it comes to features. The instruments are pretty high-end for 99$. The Orchestral JamPack allows you to use pinpoint dynamics (a violin that swells as you hold a note, for instance, can be made with a few mouse clicks). You can also use pinpoint articulation, so you can switch quickly between pizzicato, staccato, legato, tremolo, trill, vibrato, or normal; to name a few, with another few clicks of a button. Sure it's not a good program for idiots who use fl presets and basically drag random notes in, but for those who can play piano, it's quite simple. If you can't play piano, you ought to have a hell of a time learning ANY program's piano roll. After a year of practice, I can read piano roll as though it were western musical notation.

Seriously, cubase and fl aren't that good. Audacity is ok for the few features you get, but garageband is great for people who actually enjoy heavy editability.

Sure the export quality isn't that great, but oh well.

And if anyone needs to know how to get to these features (they're nearly impossible to find unless you know where to look), just pm me or post or something.

Very true, I don't understand why people think that Garageband is stupid?! I have said it again and again: I make ALL my songs on Garageband! So how would I be able to be that creative and original if Garageband wasn't a good program? Oh, the export quality is FANTASTIC if you download a 1 MB program called Switch. It is free to. And the features you get to understand after having a lot of experience with Garageband. And if you like it, just download some stuff for it for free in the audio download section at apple.com!!!

You know, you guys shouldn't diss GarageBand so much. It may be free, and low level compared to FL or Logic, but some people can't afford those. It's not always a void of creativity, as someone above me said, it really depends on who uses it. You can still do alot with it, especially if you have the extra instruments pack you can buy from apple.

Just cause you don't like something doesn't mean its shit, you know?

Wow, I'd never heard of this 'lodgic studio' or whatever other industry standard recording software that over 60% of all commercial tracks are produced with! Thanks for the heads up! I'll get a copy for my macbook pro.

EXACTLY! Ok, the best program to use is Logic Studio, but it cost 400$. So the best free program to use is probably Garageband. I like FL Studio and all, but I like Garageband better. I really think people can make some really tight stuff with it.
