imagine all the under age drinking that would go on, ion my opinion it would be best to lower the age, then make sure that people are told that alcohol isnt that big a deal from a young age encourage to try the odd sip of wine etc. then we reduce our nations binge drinking problem as it would just be something unimportant, part of the furniture

Personally I couldn;t give a fuck. I like alcohol, but I don't need it to have a good time.

I doubt the goverment would raise it to 21, they would lose so much money from it.

Fuck that! I only turned 18 last month, it would be just typical if the age went up just as I reached it. It would be like being 15 again.

However, I really don't think it's ever going to happen. 18-21 is a vast majority of the student population, and raising the drinking age would severely dent the profits of breweries and distributors of alcohol.

Also the government would lose out on tax. Same reason why smoking isn't banned outright, they can't afford to.

This wouldn't make a difference to 18-21 year olds. Those with any sense would just use fake IDs.The only reason you lot care is because you have to be smashed off your face to be entertaining.

Shame that most places in the UK only accept driving licenses and passports as ID.

It's the minority that ruin it for everyone else. Everyone has this image that all 13-18 year olds want to do is get pissed all the time, and the most likely reason is that they have only just been introduced to alcohol. I got all the "ZOMG ALK NOMNOMNOM" attitude out of the way when I was 13, now I enjoy my drinks rather than down countless cans of cheap lager.

Call me crazy, but lowering the drinking age would be more effective in tackling the UK's binge drinking culture.

I'd be pissed off, but I turn 21 next month anyway so it'd only be a short while before it was legal again. If they were gonna raise the alcohol age to 21 there should be certain places where 18+ people can drink, so as to let them become accustomed to it all. If people were more sensible when they drank there'd be a lot less fights and stuff every night.

My god that is the dumbest thing I've heard. Kids will just drink more, as they are allowed to. Drinking will always be regarded as a cool and grown up thing, if the drinking age was lowered then we'd have more binge drinkers out on weekends and even younger kids drinking illegally.

Drinking should be raised to 21, making it harder for kids to obtain alcohol. Also, parents should be fined if their kids are caught drinking. Too many parents (COUNCIL ESTATES) don't care when they're 16 year old kids go out drinking and driving on weekends.

Drinking Age is a joke. Most of my friends (including myself) were 14 or 15 when they were fully intoxicated for the first time.

When I worked in an off-licence, teenagers used to come in all the time trying to buy alcohol. We refused them, and some of them just accepted it and went elsewhere, but some of the little jerkoffs would steal it because we wouldn't serve them. So basically, kids are always going to be able to acquire booze until the government clamps down on under-age drinkers. Fining their parents, as you said, would be a good idea because even if their idiot parents don't care about their idiot kids getting drunk and harassing people, they're definitely going to care about it when they're being fined.

And also, I believe that anyone caught drink-driving should be permabanned from driving.

My old best friend used to get served alcohol at 14, but not from most off-licence shops, it used to be a general store type place that was run by some Pakistan's, they just really didn't care how old someone was, just the fact that it was a sale, and that is an unneeded factor in the underaged drinking problem. There does need to be harsher penalties on places that sell alcohol to kids I suppose.

Completely agreed. I also think that anyone who does a hit and run should be put away for life if their victim was killed. It's still murder and I get sick of reading in the papers that another drug using young adult has just got a driving ban of 6 months and a fine for running over and killing someone. another issue though I guess..

There was a case a couple of years ago where a Pakistani was doing something like 70MPH in a school zone and he ran over and killed a little girl. He got nine months in prison. I always remember hearing the mother being interviewed on the radio because she pointed out that the idiot who killed her daughter will be a free man once again even before the anniversary of the little girl's death.

Yep, the laws in this country suck badly. It's all about trying not to offend foreign residents more it seems.

Other European countries have lower drinking ages, and do not have the god awful underage binge drinking problem. Granted, this may be due to a less dense population, but introducing alcohol to a younger age would hopefully diminish the whole "Oh I'm cool, I'm drinking illegally" mentality.

Anyways, just a theory, and I don't particularly want 16 year olds clogging up the bars, but 24 year olds stumbling around pissed off their face threatening to smack you in the face for so much as looking at them is much, much more annoying.

There is already the task 21 scheme, and some places (mainly tesco) have a task 30 scheme operating. Umbrella much? And is it really only <18 people that drink and drive? Please stop making that generalization, there have been cases of people as old as 70 being done for drink driving, it is only a minority of complete wankers who decide to steal cars when they're pissed, not to mention the number of people who drink drive beyond that age, especially those who haven't been caught. Just to make myself clear, drink driving is disgusting, I've had a friend who's crashed from drink driving and I have no sympathy whatsoever for him, whereas I have actually been in a crash with a friend who was perfectly sober. Luckily it was only a crash barrier that he hit after losing control, but after something like that, any sort of alcohol that could be involved really hit home after that accident.

You imply that it's Pakistanis that supply alcohol to underage people? Please, I've been ID'd by more Pakistani people than I have white, and I commend them for doing their job.

Task 21 works fine, but there's always going to be a minority that slips through the net (And I used to be one of them, but I have been mistaken for 18-20 since I was 16)
Fuck the drinking age being raised to 21, it's a suggestion that's raised by elitist wankers who think they can handle their drink when the majority of crime is caused by people older than them getting trashed off their face and causing most of the grievances you hear about in the news. Or maybe you don't, since it's 20+ pages buried in the newspaper because they always seem to sensationalize underage drinking and dump it on the front page.

I will agree with you though that parents should be fined if their child is caught committing a crime of any sort while under the influence though. That frame of mind really needs to be stamped out, drinking should always be a social and happy occasion, and from drinking from an early age that is what I have learned.

Christ, this post may seem somewhat "controversial" but you haven't heard half of my experiences so far, you could write a fucking book.

That'd be a pretty shitty deal. If one day you can buy alcohol and the next you can't.
