What do you mean by 'testing it within the ,fla'? Do you mean just pressing enter and letting it play?
If so, maybe you've got some stop commands?
Or maybe it messed up the exporting? Try reexporting...
Tell us what kind of thing it is, check any AS you have, explain...

I mean testing within the .fla by going to Control, then Test Movie or pressing Ctrl + Enter. A window pops up within the workspace that plays the movie as if it were a .swf. Know what I'm saying? It works fine when I do that, but not when I open the stand-alone .swf file. The file contains some API code, but I don't think that's what's causing it because I have other flash that has API code and tey work fine.

When you press ctrl+enter, it's basically just playing the .swf.
Each time you do that, what happens is that it's actually exporting a fresh swf then opening that. So if you open that same swf (normally given the same name as the fla file) it should behave identically.
The only difference that comes to my mind is that when you open the swf it doesn't always necessarily open at the desired size, depending on how you open it. Other than that it would be the same file as you just tested.
Quite an odd problem.

The top picture is within the flash file...it works fine
The bottom picture is the .swf file...see how the text looks different and also some variables didn't show?
what the hell is going on?

Really, I'm sorry I don't know enough to help you more.
All I can suggest is that you make a dynamic text box tracking all the variables that matter? Maybe one of them is playing up and that'll give you a clue?

Wait... Are you making the .fla in Flash Professional 7 or higher? Cuz then that means you're default flash player is version 6 and the only time you use version 7 is in the flash document.
I'm assuming you're flash player is updated to at least 7 or 8 for when you watch .swf on the internet, so the thing to do would be to take the .swf file (the one that is not working) and right clicking>open with> firefox or internet explorer. If it works, come back and we'll talk about it.
hope this helps.
Yes, that does work...but it still doesn't work otherwise...what's the next step?

not so sure.. but check the most simple things taht turn out as a problem.. did you put a stop script to your flash?
it's your flash player. Your standard flash player isn't neccisarily the same as the one flash used to test your movies. Try reinstalling your flash player and you should be fine.
