anybody else kinda want to take their jobs? I mean...I hear what they're saying, but I'm a college student, so I'd probably work for less than they are making, which will be less than they're asking...and I'd flip my shit :p

But I do understand. Without the writer's the actors would have nothing. It's the delivery that we love about our actors, but the jokes come from the writers. That's why I want to have my own animated TV show and do all of it :) Voice acting, directing, and writing :)

Listen to my Demo and PM me if you want me to voice act for you, I'd be happy to help.

A writing competition?

Give potentials certain guidelines to follow, and a minimum of content, and they all have to create a story of their own based on the guidelines.

hmm, what they're asking for isn't to unreasonable. Just pay the damn writers and get back to work already.

Hehehe, SAG. No-one else finds that funny?

Hm, as for the competition... The competition could simply be what you have written, create a flash movie which supports the writers. One could create something funny with ridiculously exaggerated consequences of no movies being made. Basically the contest should be fairly broad in that sense, I think NG's artists will find a way to make it funny, put more faith in us, Tom!

Hmph.

Most people don't support the writers or the strike. But if you make a competition where money could be won, I'm sure many people would instantly become quite concerned.

Wow, I take time off for Thanksgiving, and this thread is 6 pages long already! That must be a good sign many of you are interested in the Writers Guild Strike :)

Thank you Tom, for posting this so quickly! I am still in post-turkey coma, but I'll try to make time to read over the posts and see your ideas. One thing I want to correct though:
Those of you who keep saying, I'll just watch reality TV instead... well, I hate to break it to you all, but even reality TV hires WGA writers. Every time a TV host asks a question to the contestants or narrates anything? A WGA writer wrote that. Who thought of the questions, competitions and everything the reality TV show host says? WGA writers. Ditto game shows and talk show monologues. That's showbiz, gang.

If you want some ideas, go to www.unitedhollywood.com and check out some of their live strike footage. United Hollywood is the campaign headquarters of the WGA strike - so they have the official online petition there too. Or check out the Pencils2MediaMoguls campaign. Maybe make some vids to promote that?

If you are asking, 'What's This Strike All About Anyway? I want my Shows back...' then watch these YouTube vides from their official site (WGAamerica) for a 3 minute explanation.

*Why We Fight
A 3 min video explanation made by the WGA writers to explain the strike.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ55Ir2jC xk

*Who Are They Lying To?
The WGA question big media and ask who are they lying to -- the writers or their stockholders.
http://www.youtube.com/v/RjGbHHtbZP0&rel =1

I'm going to post some links later that may give you all ideas too. Meanwhile, those of you in the US, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. And everyone else, I'm looking forward to your flashes :) Bye

Although getting more money, if a job well done is good, some people shouldn't get payed for the crap that they put into TV circulation. I don't think I am either for or against the strike. I don't really watch TV any more. Although I am interested in how long this will last, because I wonder what the writers are going to do for money since the guild will only pay for so much till the money runs dry.
Really I'm more wondering about the consequences on both sides and how much both sides will suffer.

I know that sounds horrible... But I can't help but think this way.

At the risk of being unpopular, I'd support the Writers Strike if they had actually created anything original over the past few years. Everything on TV is shit that I've seen before, millions of times. Yes, let's give Writers proper credit where it's due. I'd love to know the names of the real TV Writers who originally came up with the ideas I'm currently seeing on TV, on a regular basis; over and over and over again. I wonder how many decades ago that was.

Movie Writers? Even worse. Yeah, turn of the Century.... The 21st Century..... and what do we have to show for it? A shitload of old movies given a facelift. (Well, that's Hollywood for you).

Anyone enjoyed seeing Nikolas Cage in "The Wickerman?" Yeah, I liked it too...... back when the original was released and Edward Woodward played the same, damn, role back in 1973!

So who are the movie Writers we are supposed to be crediting?

I am a big Howard Stern fan, and the other day he had Greg Fitzsimmons (comedian and member of the Writer's Guild" on the show. He went into some detail about the troubles that the writers have faced getting Hollywood to treat them with the same respect that other contributors of the entertainment industry are treated with. Basically, the writers are not being properly compensated for the work they are providing - which in my mind really devalues a lot of entertainment media on the whole. Cost of living in Hollywood is pretty damn high. While to the average joe their paychecks might seem damn impressive, but in reality a lot of them have trouble just getting by. And consider how often new shows are cancelled. You could really call a lot of them seasonal employees.

So, what do we as Newgrounders and fans do to show support? That is tough. Can't really buy more DVDs, since the money doesn't funnel to them. Can't really watch more TV shows, because eventually everything is going to go into perma-rerun and will benefit only the sponsors.

Things are going to get dire real, real quick.

A collab might be a good way to raise awareness and maybe even morale. As for a theme, that might be tough. NG is known for over the top violence, so maybe a stick collab where Hollywood brass are fed their organs? Or maybe the sentient fish rapist can visit the studio mogals as they count their money.

Or maybe a collab showcasing a world where all of the real writers are long gone, and TV is WAAAYYY past shitty. Every contributor could do a mini "pilot" for a horrible show, like one about a guy who pastes Handi-Snacks on his chest and recites Metallica lyrics. Or one where three blind kids learn to skateboard and save the world from land-walking sharks. Those sound really shitty.

Anyway, there's my two cents.

Well, supporting that strike with a HUGE collab would be a great way to help them in their cause.

Or Newgrounds could sell T-shirts saying " Im wrinting my own shit", or something like that... Just a tought.

Why does it have to be fun? It should be stern and controversial. If you turn it into something humorous no one's going to take it seriously. And lord knows if you give newgrounds members a serious topic they usually turn it into a complete joke. Then again, most serious animations make me laugh on this site. Anyway, something that really puts a strong message out there. Maybe make a cartoon about what a cartoon would be like without writers. Not like a narrative documentary but an actual cartoon with the animator's vision being literally a cartoon that was made devoid of a screenplay or anything. If it was played out right , with the message attached , it could be very powerful.

How would a 30 minute long badly animated ms-paint-esque tribute to Jack Bauer and 30 Rock benefit the writers in any way?

you mean like we have been doing for the last 4 or more years?

the entertainment of recent years has been predictable and stale.
which is why newgrounds and other online communities have come to become places with fresh content.
We've had no choice but to entertain ourselves, I'd believe this flash needs to be above all entertaining and fun, as well as informative. No one wants to see some serious, emo collab based on crybaby writers who have put themselves in there own situation.

I say let them strike, maybe the poverty will get their creative juices flowing
