Live next to it, in Sweden. Where quite similiar, although we have life prison (though it's rarely used) and a little bit worse economy. Still doing great, though (until now when rightwingers have government, now it's getting worse).

Because people who belong to certain minority groups statistically score lower in certain areas that are considered when determining healthcare quality. Things like infant mortality and life expectancy are low among the prominent minorities in the US, thus skewing the national average. But people of similar races in the US and Norway score about the same.

People talk about Norwegians living longer and claiming it's due to their healthcare but it's not. It's due to a whole host of factors that are unaffected by healthcare. Remove those factors, and the US has the highest life expectancy in the western world (which includes Norway of course).

The US has a large, diverse population over a large area.

Countries with smaller populations that are well-to-do are better at managing their country because it's easier to organize a social system when it only caters to a few million people who belong to a homogenous group. When you have 300 million people, tens of millions of illegal immigrants, 100 million minorities and isolated minority areas... over large areas, this creates a disconnect.

I'm not saying the US should get rid of minorities, because I am a minority. I'm saying that the simple fact is that statistically speaking, the US has an unfavorable situation in a comparison with other countries in certain health areas. It makes comparisons with other countries that consist almost entirely of white, norther Europeans completely beyond the mark.

More like, they are a country with little immigration (compared to the US), with a small population, surrounded by successful countries, protected by a blanket of protection (provided by the US) so they don't have to spend very much on military to assert themselves, and they stand on the shoulders of countries that they depend on economically.

They have the luxury of having lavish social programs because of their situation.

So your saying if somone who wasn't incompitent was president... They would be able make it so that

- The US didn't have such a large and diverse population
- it was a smaller more 'well to do' country, as cellardoor put it.
- it wasn't bordered by 3rd world countries
- it didn't have huge numbers of illegal aliens entering the country?

Maybe if we elected adolf hitler as president we could solve a few of these issues.

But they have lavish social programs. And they work. The issue here isn't which country in the Western World can juggle with the largest amount of issues of every kind while maintaining a stable society (and the US is probably up for taking the cake there, I'm not contesting that), it's simply which one's got a better working healthcare system. But I can tell you that Sweden, which is right next to it, has nearly the same status. It's like norway, just a little bit worse. And we DON*T have a homogenous population.

And that was 2004. Since your war in Iraq, we've been having FLOODS of Iraqi refugees. Sweden has 18 times as many of the Iraqi refugees as the US, on a much smaller population.

I would love to go to Norway (or Sweden) one day, and I think I will... But everything is so expensive out there.
