People, in general, what do you think of lyrics in music?
For a lot of the songs I hear today, the lead singer's voice completely drowns out and ruins the music. I think if the singer's voice is really good, it should be 90% instruments, 10% voice.
If it's rap or a funny song, then it's alright for me.
In my opinion, instruments make up most of the music. I don't like the sound of a human voice compared to an instrument. I hear it all the time, and no matter how high or low it gets, it's still a voice. There isn't enough variety in voice, but there is in instruments. Plus, some of the lyrics in songs really just are not well written, or the singer does not do a good job of voicing them.
It's just my opinion, but if there was less lyrics and more solos with more variety of instruments than drums and electric guitar, music would be much better.
That's why my favorite music does come from video games.
I like music from bands, but battle music, simply instruments with no words, gives me an adrenaline rush that the radio cannot give me.
So NG, what's your opinion on lyrics?

I gotta admit, a lot of people write some craptastic lyrics, but there are some really, really, good signers out there.

Hehe... not a fan of lyrics? Well, for me, if the lyrics fit the song, and the vocalist has the right stuff for the song, then it should come out perfectly.
I disagree with your regard that vocals do not have variety. Rock/metal vocals differ from that of a balladeer's. And you can't place Jay-Z in a Rage Against The Machine song... it just won't fit.
There are pathetic lyrics, and there are excellent ones. Personally, Sting would have the best lyrics for any pop song.

If the lyrics are good, they should be heard, if not, then the music is more important - simple logic.

im not a lyric kind of person, most important for me is the unity of the song. in most cases the voice serves as an instrument in my ears, and i pay little attention to the actual lyrics. i usually don't care to listen to whats being said (sung) until after a few listens, unless I know that the lyrics are something special that I should pay extra attention to.

i think that lyrics aren't usually important because most people listen to songs that they think sounds good not one that sends out a message you know

I don't really like lyrics myself.
Some lyrics are OK, Like Metallica's and Slayer's earlier works.
That's why I'm a fan of Groove Metal, like Machine Head's Burn My Eyes. A Few bits of lyrics, then an instrumental bridge. Also, Sepultura are good at this with there classic Beneath The Remains, and Chaos A.D.
Still, I am still wanting to find a full instrumental heavy metal/thrash band.

I didn't mean ones that send a message. I just mean a bad voice or crappy lyrics.

Lyrics to a song is like sugar to coffee (or chocolate milk, if you want) -- you can drink it as is, or sweeten it up a bit.
If the music is bland, it can be sweeter with lyrics. Most ballads are like that -- the music from the instruments is very basic; listen to it alone, and it may be bland. Add lyrics, and it comes to life. Listen to the Carpenters or almost any pop hit, for instance.
There is also music that is flavorful without lyrics. These are usually full instrumentals with an instrument leading the melody. These can stand alone without lyrics, and sometimes, the flavor gets ruined if you put lyrics into it. Examples here would be Yanni, Dream Theater, and most classical pieces.
Personal preference? Depends on the coffee (or chocolate milk).

All the bands are nothing short of lyrical genius that have the eact amount of lyrics in each song. Except for Finches song Ender. I don't want around 2:00 minutes of lyrics w/ instruments and then 9-11 minutes of a shitty instrumental
All the cool kids have signature text
