http://www.godaddy.com

I like them, some people don't. There shared hosting is nice and cheap and would probably be pretty good for practicing.

I second this. My original webhost sold to another complany and I was never able to access my information. You want to avoid the hassle of small companies, trust me. GoDaddy is relatively cheap, (but not the cheapest), and has good support too. I submitted a ticket and got a response within a couple hours (compared to my old webhost who would take at least a day).

GoDaddy is a good. And you're not paying that much more for quality service.

I also agree, GoDaddy is very good. Instead of sending a ticket though, you can always give them a call. If you're looking for something even more cheap (26.60 USD/year for 9999999999999 everything) (It is a small Web Hosting company, but you may want to give them a look.) http://www.terabytewebsolutions.co.uk/ho st/whmcs/

Plus any one know how to make a website secure like neuro cam did?

Neuro cam is a secret website of an alternative reality game in Australia that draws people in by being mysterious and when people tried to pick it apart with programming smarts to figure out who owned it, it was to no avail. How is this done?

Not to mention is this a good place to ask for html, web design and of the such advice here on newgrounds?

And also to fish for flash artists to help out?

Yeah but if you want to know how to do it, it's the worst place to come unless you try it first and get stuck.

And also to fish for flash artists to help out?

Flash artists are in the flash forum but again, they're not going to help you unless you get stuck.

Helpful...

Although, to be honest self hosting is much easier for newbies (and free), as (without being funny) no one is gonna go on your site...

You can still put up a link with dyndns or no-ip, and it would be just like having a host, except its free, you have full control, no bandwidth limit and you can use whatever services you want and you don't have to upload anything to remote host
I see alot of people trying to get paid host services here, and honestly, that's just stupid unless you're serious. And by serious, I mean going to host a site which people are going to visit. Without anyone living in denial

webhost4life

Some fellow coworkers, and myself in the next month or so, have used webhosting4life. They use it primarily for .net projects, but it as unlimited bandwidth and the online management interface is really nice.

No such thing.
It may have unmonitored bandwidth, but i'd never trust a site that offered that.

I have thought of that as well, but the bottom line is that you will not be charged with exceeding bandwidth fees.

So then why are torrent programs legal? They use the IP's bandwidth to distribute files and content.

No? They use your computer to host the file. They are P2P programs.

What I am getting as is bandwidth usage. I would suspect that your average person supplying/downloading torrents would eat up much more bandwidth than someone and their site which will get very little traffic. Furthermore with streaming media, I could download every song from Rhapsody and it would run for months eating up bandwidth, far much worse than serving small website content.

Although I don't believe its illegal, slower upload speeds from ISPs could be the thought about deterring people from doing this.

Well I talked around the office some about this and it seems you are right. From a bandwidth point of view in makes no sense, but from a business point of view it would make more sense for them to regulate this to make more money. Greedy bastards.

Actually some hosts will if you crash the server causing everyone else's stuff to go down as well.

Well as long as you know where you are doing (which in most cases doesn't take much) that problem shouldn't arise. Although for the poor bastard it does happen to, sorry bout em :)

If you use the coupon code 97USA when signing up, you get $97 off your purchase (first-time customers only). This brings the cheapest package down to only $23 for the whole year.

It happened to friends of mine who had a really popular fansite for an indie singer. They crashed within about 15-30 minutes of opening the site because people were streaming and the host that they were on weren't happy with them. I think that if they advertise unlimited bandwidth, they need to be made to honor that, but in reality, there's no such thing at all.

Now if you host your own site, your ISP may have a problem with you doing that. They may have a special plan like mine that you can upgrade to in order to host a server at home where they give you the bandwidth needed for something like $15 extra a month.

Is that the price with a dedicated IP, or just the OK from the ISP to host a server?

Thats almost to the point were you better off buying your own semi-dedicated/dedicated server. Unless server administration is your thing or something you want to learn.

Well, internet is $35 a month I believe, plus the extra $10 for Boost (if you have both voice and internet) then if you have voice and cable it's extra. They give you webspace and a domain if you want them to host it (though they only give 1GB of space). http://www.optimum.com/order/boost/index .jsp

From what I gather (correct me if I am wrong) if I host my own website, I do not get an ip address, thus making it private. Problem is the bandwidth and my ISP will get pissed at me doing this for I would be eating up their bandwidth and no one would go to my site. Why no one would come? Is it that lack of advertisement or a technical reason? If the former, then it would be easy to overcome by paying a advert hosting service (like project wonderful or google.) If it is the former, please recommend a good advertising service that is affordable and honest (not going to screw me.) Ideas, suggestion and comments about this?

Now the better question is what would you recommend for me to be able to host my own website? What do I need to know and do? Recommended equipment?

Now I was thinking maybe I could give a shot at starting my own ISP. I am getting the feeling this would be outa my current abilities and resources, but just for debate and fun, what would it take to make one?

From what I am reading, I thinking making it would be best to go the a free webhosting site till I get my skills down (geocities and the like still exist?) and until I get a small crowd, then move to a paid web hosting site then host my own stuff after getting a small following. Questions are: Do you think this is a good plan? Second question is what do I need to know about transferring files from one website to another? Any other advice?

The final question is dealing with security . What things do I need to know? What problems should I expect? and how should I counter them?

What kind of site is it going to be? Make the content interesting and as original as possible and people would come. I wouldn't pay to advertise a site unless it's a business.

Now the better question is what would you recommend for me to be able to host my own website? What do I need to know and do? Recommended equipment?

Get a cheap host and domain, no need for an expensive service unless your site really takes off.

Now I was thinking maybe I could give a shot at starting my own ISP. I am getting the feeling this would be outa my current abilities and resources, but just for debate and fun, what would it take to make one?

That could run you a lot of $$. Again, you're better off with a commercial service already in existence.

From what I am reading, I thinking making it would be best to go the a free webhosting site till I get my skills down (geocities and the like still exist?) and until I get a small crowd, then move to a paid web hosting site then host my own stuff after getting a small following. They exist but they suck. I would go with http://www.superfreehost.info to practice with. Transferring files is no big deal. Get yourself an FTP program and you're good to go.

The final question is dealing with security . What things do I need to know? What problems should I expect? and how should I counter them?

You don't need to know about security unless you're using an advanced language like PHP and MySQL. I don't know what your skills are but you don't need to know about security if you're just using HTML & CSS.

At first it is going to be a political website with nothing but text with a black background to make it easy on the eyes. Make it an alternative news source and a commentary of what I want to say.

After I get things going, perhaps start adding audio and a forum. I would like to be able to host my own videos cause you tube tends to censor stuff.

Then when I am good enough, perhaps my own internet radio show and other original art work and ideas.

Hell might put a game in their or two.
