Do not, I repeat, DO NOT make this a faggy topic about the current generation of consoles.
I started gaming early and the first ever console I ever played was a third generation console, the NES. Back then I wasn't at school yet and just enjoyed the Duck Hunt game with the light gun. I then moved on to the Megadrive and the SNES of the 4th generation, I recently helped cleaned out the loft and found a Megadrive box with a Mega CD and there was a price sticker on it and it was over £100 which is what you would pay for a DS or a PSP. My SNES had my favourite game Punch out but back then it was Mike Tyson's Punch out. It got stolen along with all the games I had for it when I went on holiday. I was an avid Sonic fan as I never had an interest for Mario, so yeah I prefer Sonic over Mario but I play Mario games now.
The generations previous to the 5th gen was before I was at school and never really knew how passionate people were about consoles. I was just happy to play video games. I started school and the 5th gen was about. The top contenders were the Sega Saturn, the Playstation and the N64. The other consoles were pretty unknown and I read up about them, it's amazing what you can learn. At that time the 'original' Dreamcast came out, I call it Dreamcast because it suffered the same fate. From what I know it was released first and boasted powerful hardware such as being 64 bit rather than the other's 32 bit. This console was the Atari Jaguar and it died by the hand of Sony, Sega and Nintendo. I put more emphasis on Sony because they also killed off the Dreamcast in a sales sense.
Anyway when I was at school I support the Playstation along with a friend and another friend was for the Nintendo 64. There were a few Sega fanboys but I never really played the Saturn except once at some guy's house. My dad bought a Playstation for his bedroom, I would play a lot and eventually passed it down to me as my mum didn't like the idea of a video games console in the parental bedroom. I used to play the huge disc of demo's that was in the Playstation box including an extreme sports game where you use a skateboard, roller-skates and others to race a course and sometimes run down 2D rabbits in the road and punch other racers. A couple of years laterwhen I left primary school and into secondary school I go to a cottage somewhere in the country for holiday and it was boring as there was nothing to do. So we went to a Woolworths in the local town and we purchased a N64 with pokemon casing. It came with Pokemon Stadium and I was well chuffed, best game I played for the N64 apart from a Star Wars game. I got ill later because my arm was enlarged because of shuddering when taking an injection so I couldn't play my Pokemon Stadium.
The sixth generation was looming and Dreamcast was announced. I never really cared for Dreamcast because I didn't really know much about it but a lot of people bought one until Sony came along with a sequel to their successful Playstation, Playstation 2. I WANTED ONE. After they came out they literally destroyed any hope the Dreamcast could ever have to being the best console of that generation. This was truly the end for Sega to be producing any consoles and perhaps limit them making games because I haven't seen a new game by Sega for a long time except for that Olympic one. Xbox and Gamecube came out about a year after the debut of the Playstation 2 but the PS2 was holding strong. I got my PS2 with Smugglers Run which was a mediocre game but I was stunned at how far we've come. Eventually I got an Xbox but at the time I hated Microsoft for creating a completely new console out of no where without having an interest in console producing. I had the HUEG BEEFY HUEGBOX controllers which I never swapped.
By the end of the sixth gen the PS2 had become the most successful console ever sold with over 100 million shipped units compared to Xbox's over 25 million and Gamecube with slightly less than the Xbox. During the start of the seventh gen my original PS2 broke and I got a slim line one, I had the Xbox sold with the majority of it's games to get an Xbox 360. I've had my Xbox 360 break down twice and had to exchange for a new one. My relegated my slim line PS2 out of my bedroom to to the computer room. They say the 7th gen begun with the Nintendo DS and my brother got the original chunky silver ones way before the 360. Last February I managed to get a Nintendo Wii after trying to get one for Christmas 2006. For Christmas I got a black slim DS. Now is the time to complete the seventh generation. I'm going to get a PS3 like I said at the start because I was a Sony fanboy back then. When they revealed the price tag I said I would get the other consoles first then get this. So after many years of gaming I am going to purchase my first games console. All the others were gifts or the family's consoles. I want to buy my own to show that I can be independent and not rely on mummy and daddy. Anyway I won't bore you with stuff we've heard all before about the current generation. It feels strange to call the next gen the current gen as we've fought about it so many times that we're right in the middle of it happening.
You know the reason I was posting this thread was to tell you about how my friends discussed who would win the Sony-Nintendo-Sega console war but I expanded on my gaming life and just made the topic pretty redundant. I spent like 30 minutes thinking and writing this poorly written story of my gaming life and at 5-6am in the morning. I would like to end this with a little fact and a list of consoles I played throughout my life. Feel free to add your own.
Nintendo have been around the video game's industry since the beginning since it was originally called Marufuka in 1889. Apparently they helped shift the sales of the first ever home video games console: The Magnavox Odyssey. I feel a sort of patriotic urge to salute them despite not being top console producers since the SNES-N64 era.

Well I only know how certain consoles worked if I played them. But here's a little history of the patent war of the Odyssey and Pong. If you ask anybody which was the first ever console and they will say Pong which was wrong as any video games expert will tell you that the Odyssey was first. The Odyssey had many games built into it including a ping pong game, Pong only had ping pong and it did not play any other games which is probably why people remember it more as it's emphasis was on ping pong.
The Odyssey was the first to have a light gun, it was a rifle instead of the typical pistol light gun. If you look up the Odyssey's controllers they were certainly different to the ergonomic controllers we have now. If you want to know who starting researching video games first than that's when it gets cloudy. Baer who created the Odyssey and the maker of Pong both looked into these type of oscilloscopes (It was probably something completely different) to make space games. From what I can get from the top of my knowledge that the developers of pong started the video games interest in the late 50s and Baer in the late 60s. But don't take my word for it.
What happened to the companies that developed the first ever console? Magnavox opted out the video games industry and continued making televisions and Atari who made pong still make games and the odd remake of consoles. There was another console in the first generation called the Connecticut Leather Company (Who made cabbage patch kids apparently) now know as Coleco (COnnecticut LEather COmpany) who made the Telstar which was typically a clone of the first two but more so on Pong as it's only game was ping pong but with three variants.

This is the reason why console threads were banned. In fact any discussion on video games is frowned upon because people can't stop talking about the current console war. Video games have a huge village but people can't stop talking about the last two years.

I would sit for hours and play this ninja game. Then I didnt get anything else until the N64, I loved super smash bros. Then I got an PS2 and a Xbox, now I have a Xbox 360.

I kinda have to disagree with your generational listings. I consider the NES to be 1st generation. All those things before it took place before the big home console crash that NES dragged the industry out of, so those are really more "B.C.E." systems, with NES onward being "C.E."

If you read the history it will make sense that generation listings are correct. A book I recommend is The Ultimate History of Video Games by Steven L Kent which is a great read and I got it the other day as Wikipedia is not really a reliable source for getting information which is where initially I found about the start of the video games console but because I wanted to make sure I got the book. I will agree that most people had a Nintendo console as their first namely the NES, SNES and if younger the N64. The console crash of 1983 which coincidentally is the same year the third generation started was big. In 1984 the Famicon was released in Japan and 1986 in America. You may know the famicon was marketed as the Nintendo Entertainment System in America.
If Nintendo did indeed help end the video games crash because I haven't read much into it they are even more nobler than what I thought they were because I consider Nintendo the biggest part of video games that I can't even understand how they can increase their positive outcome as it is then. I still think the categorisation of generations should be how it is. However it means nothing as the generations were devised by Wikipedia and I haven't seen this categorisation elsewhere. It may be mentioned in this book but I haven't got as far as I'm in the middle of Atari's attempt to build itself up with Nolan Bushnell and Al Alcorn selling the pong console. I do agree with the generation format because it's simple instead of BCE and CE.
You should get this book as it describes in detail the first ever electronic game "Spacewar" by Steve Russell on these huge computers. They first used these computers with tubes attached to it but were removed to be replaced with transistors.

my first console was the ps1, but i never played it because my mum only let me have dance dance revolution, and i ain't playing that!
then i found donkey kong on the n64, and i spent literally half a year playing donkey kong and mario
who ive been raised up on since i was a kid, then i finally got bored of mario and sonic and donkey kong
then i got a ps2, and found a great love for a game, gift, it is perfect, the comedy mixed with the storyline plus a hint of horror, it was genius
then i found an xbox and the first games i loved apart from gift and crazy taxi (me and my brothers were really competitive on that)
i found halo
now, most people will call me a fag for likeing this, but hear me out
i didn't have a computer nor played duke nuke'em befour, so i loved the game, its second only to bioshock at this moment in time
halo ones storyline to me was a little vague, but i had fun playing it, and thats what gets me confused sometimes, why do people put eachother down for playing a console they like (die you ps3 fags) (that was a joke, just so you know)
lately ive taken to getting myself some computer games, i have been collecting them for 4 years and now, thanks to a couple of generous donations by my neighbors , i have well over 100 in my collection, including unopened copies of phantasmagoria, ripper, mist, and the complete alone in the dark series
once the xbox 360 was announced, i got a paper route and began earning my xbox money, and i was finding it really hard not spend it, £300 is a lot of money for a simple minded 13 year old to have (or 12, i forget how long the 360 has been out) and finally brought it
now i was proud with my purchase, and managed to get myself gears of war, oblivion, overlord, bioshock, halo 3, guitar hero(my brothers) ghost recon, command and conquer 3 and dead rising (which i later swapped for saints row )
i am planning to get myself a ps3, once the console picks itself back up, sonys really dieing out there, and even though im a xbox fan all the way, it would be sad to see such a great gaming company die...
...even if they are lieing like hell to keep themselves afloat
(heavenly sword for instance, all you need to do is program a game to make it increase the difficulty to your skill level, not some shitty lie about blue ray)
and i believe thats got to be the longest post ive ever done
ps just to piss you guys off
HALO 3 RULES
FURRY RULES
KITTY CREW RULES (now i seriously didn't mean that, im gonna punish myself later, with a whip!)
thank you and goodnight, time to try and complete beast and the harlot on expert on guitar hero if the disc actually lets me finish the song, it has a nasty habit of crashing on the last note
and i did spellchck most of that, but i think some words might still be wrong, forgive me for that
