Hey.
I want to make a forum for all of Newground's Programming forum users to just talk about... whatever the fuck they want.
Just like General, but with less retards.
I figured that it's awesome talking to you guys about programming, but I want to get to talk to you about every day shit, have discussions and debates, and just fucking have a good time.
I've been dying to go to General lately because I just want to talk about other shit then programming without having my threads locked/deleted, but then I see the top 6 topics... 3 about masturbation, 2 about atheism, and a fucking stupid parody topic.
I need your help with just one thing...
I get hosting from a friend. I intend to buy hosting in the near future, but for now I get a subdomain on a friend's site.
I don't have access to any SQL databases.
If anybody can donate some MySQL space to me for this, I'd be highly appreciative.
Just send me a PM with the details so I can open up this forum.
I'll design it sooner or later... For a while it'll be the default SMF theme, but I'll probably make it look like Newgrounds or something so we're all at home.
:)
Thanks.

That's only one thread though.
I'm talking about a bunch of forums. Different topics, zone-in on some discussions while not interrupting others.

Oh okay. I misread your post. :-)
I think there was a project for this but it may have been abandoned... usually this forum suffices.

It's cool.

Well, I'm willing to give it another shot.
This has been on my mind a lot lately, and I've just now taken the initiative to actually try it.

This is what the Programming Regs Lounge is for and I think there's an IRC channel as well

Again, this goes on in the Regs Lounge
I've been dying to go to General lately because I just want to talk about other shit then programming without having my threads locked/deleted, but then I see the top 6 topics... 3 about masturbation, 2 about atheism, and a fucking stupid parody topic.
That's because General is trashy with no real "brains" behind the topics

The problem with this is that the forum won't be hosted on your server, it'll be hosted on whoever else's so you won't be able to really integrate it.

Again, programming regs is just a topic. This is a bunch of forums so you don't have to just stay in one place... I've never been able to get into the Programming Regs Lounge just because it's just a topic to talk about whatever in. I like to move around, see different topics and shit.

Exactly

And THAT'S where you lose me.
I don't really intend to do much integration until I actually own a full server with MySQL and shit, THEN i can start making the site cool.
For the time being, it'll just be an SMF forum with (eventually) a newgrounds-like layout.

See, this would only be for a handful of people, so it's kind of a waste of resources. I wouldn't want to join another forum because it's easier to stay in 1 place.

If you host the SMF on another server, you'll only be able to link to it and it might look like you're using one of those forum hosting services. I would offer to let you use some of my space but I don't think I can create a sub account with a subdomain to give you access to the files. There wouldn't be a problem with the PHPMyAdmin access though.

Eh.
I just like hopping around to different topics and forums and shit, so it seems like a good idea to me.

It's my friend's server, but I have complete access to the subdomain files and shit (FTP). He just doesn't give me MySQL access.
Plus, that's only temporary.
I'll soon be buying hosting from dreamhost

Go make a forum here, problem solved. If you ever get your own server, just contact the admin and he'll send you the SQL dump for the forum :)
But I don't think we need another place to discuss stuff. If it's a programming community, programming will always come back.

I think that if I did make a forum at one of those places, less people would go... You know how people are.

Well, it's not a programming community, it's a community full of programmers discussing other things.
There will also be a forum that is "Programming" that just redirects to the NG programming forum.

Heh. Nah, what I'm gonna do is just use a free SQL server... it's not the most reliable thing, but it'll hold up for a month or two before I get my hosting.
Setting the forums up now.

er.. it's not necessarily where the forum is at, just that it's not here. Yeah the NG general forum sucks but I've never been a big fan of random forum convo anyway, the forums I go to are all for a specific reason. Kirupa, NG, sitepoint, etc

About your first comment about where the forum is at -- I know, but a lot of people think that (for one reason or another) if you use one of those your forum sucks.
Anyhow, I've always been a fan of random forum convo. And I know what you mean about the specificness, but still... I love the Programming forum and all the people in it, and I think this is a good chance for us all to come together in a community rather then the Newgrounds programming forum to talk about whatever the hell we want.
On a side note, I just realized that SMF cannot make a forum that redirects to another site... so I guess that's out of the question. I just won't make a programming forum... hell, you all know where this is.

perhaps I could help. I'm fluent in PHP and know a bit about MySQL, and a basic forum wouldn't really take long to make - it's just the bells and whistles that make it aggravating and tedious.
get on MSN, and we'll discuss it then.

Cool, man. That'd be appreciated.
So, whole thing on your server or just the SQL, and the rest on my shit?
PM me, we'll discuss.

Thanks for the offer, man, but as of now it's just easier to use a premade forum software.
Annnd I just formatted my hard drive, don't have MSN atm.

I've got 100 GB of space and plenty of room for everything else. I'd rather program it from scratch, but that'd take too long and I'd give up after the first few lines of code. A heavily raped phpBB3 will do.
How should the forums go? I'm thinking something like this:
Misc.
- General
- Web Hosting
- Development Software
- shitting fucks
- porn
Programming
- Desktop
- Server-side
- Markup
- Other
Graphic Design
- some other shit
etc.
Also, what should the name be? I already have http://blobfish.net and it's not being used.

I'd throw some random shit in there, like "Art/Design" and other shit that I have on the one I showed. Also, porn... Eh. I dunno. We could have a poll for that one.
Programming
- Desktop
- Server-side
- Markup
- Other
I like.
Graphic Design
- some other shit
etc.
very nice

I was thinking "Programmer's General" or "Programming General" or something along the lines of that, but I dunno.
programmersgeneral.com isn't being used, but that's a bit long and I can't buy a domain right now.
Getting a job in a bit more then a week, then I can put a bit of money towards this after a while (already saving for an external hard drive).

As for a forum layout, well personally I don't believe in having a general section - it encourages spam and useless posts, rather than meaningful discussion. I don't think I've ever posted a sensible post in a General forum (one that is long/insightful/good).
The forum should be divided up into key areas:
Design Fundamentals
Key elements of design, such as typography and the grid, colour theory etc.
Usability Issues
What makes our design more usable? How can we improve?
Code & Tools
What do we need in practice to make websites? Discuss the building blocks of web development.
In Practice
Showcase your site to our visitors.
I've probably forgotten a few. Those four are good starting points.

How 'bout a blog/forum/tutorial website for programming and design? I just shat out a layout that could be used.

Hell yeah, man!
We could all run a site (you, me, and another few choice users). That'd be kick ass.
Have users submit tutorials and shit... Come up with some way of rewarding them (maybe have some VIP forums that only tutorial writers can view and post in or something... i dunno).
