"As with previous particle accelerators, people both inside and outside the physics community have voiced concern that the LHC might trigger one of several theoretical disasters capable of destroying the Earth or even the entire Universe."
Yeah, we're going to die.

Well basically, we're all going to be crushed together in a black hole that formed inside the earth's core.

I've heard about particle accelerators elsewhere, but I guess this will be the biggest and best one.
Don't they smash together particles and atoms in an attempt to analyze the inner workings of quarks and atoms?

They're trying to recreate the events of the big bang.

If it ends, it ends, why should I care? There would be no way to prevent that sort of thing. War, I can try to prevent, A destructive singularity? nope, no prevention there, it is better to just not think about it.

It is also the only way to prove the existence of otherwise theoretical dinguses.

That's a pretty scary thought, but I heard somewhere that the rays that Stephen Hawking discovered might destroy the black hole before it forms.
Still, don't turn it on...

I hope they never prove that the big bang happened. This coming from an atheist. We need people to have faith, otherwise, life would be a free for all. Belief in a deity keeps society in line.

Bah-humbug, that is an assload of crap. People know what is right and wrong without faith. Belief in a deity doesn't keep society in line, Society keeps society in line.

Don't be so sure. You cannot deny that people don't do certain things out of fear of eternal damnation.

What about humanists? Their goal is to improve do good things in order to improve the quality of life. There's no threat of eternal damnation if you do things wrong there.
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Don't worry, I'm calling Al Queada.
Note to any Secret Service agents reading this, I'm using sarcasm, I'm not really going to call Al Queada.
But mind telling them to NOT start any particle accelerators, in the case that those things can destroy the whole universe?

Saying that it's going to make black holes is kind of misleading. Last I heard, any black hole made by the Large Hadron Collider would be so small that it would take about 1000 years to suck up one atom. The only way it's going to destroy the world is if it turns out that theoretical physics has been wrong and you really can make the Big Bang again by running some particles into eachother. Even if that were how it happened, it would have happened somewhere else in the universe by now anyway.

Unless that gets sucked up as well, in which we get stuck in Limbo forever.

Besides that, if we're going out, chances are we'll be hit with something from outer space. Either that, or it'll be something really retarded, like some guy falling asleep on the "Launch Nuclear Missle" button, and everyone starts declaring war on each other.

The black holes that the "Large" Hadron Collider are theorized to produce, would be so miniscule as to be a near impossibility to measure.
They wouldn't have the gravity to suck in a fingernail, let alone the whole universe.
This particle accelerator is not being made for the purpose of creating black holes, anyways. Scientists are trying to nail down proof of the final elements of the periodic table.
Since after a certain point, atoms become to physically large to hold themselves together, it is possible that we are on the verge of completing the periodic table, if we can provide proof that elements 113-118 really exist.

cant wait....
there gonna turn it on may 2008. that my birthday :*( why cant they do it after.
im a lil superstitious.
But the lhc is incapable of creating lasting black holes according to stephen hawking. This is a scientific marvel, i like it perhaps on the brink of knowing everything?
