The last time police came by his Tripe Street home to investigate complaints about drug dealing in the West Ashley neighborhood, William Gates made it clear to them that he had had enough.
"I told the police, 'Bring the coroner and body bags the next time you come out here,' " he said. "Nobody is going to run me out of my home."
The coroner and body bags weren't needed Friday morning because when Gates made good on his statement, he only wounded the men he shot. But it wasn't for lack of trying.
"I shot to kill," he said. "I'm not going to lie to you."
You gotta love onery old men with shotguns.

damn, that's a good argument for guns. If a gun can make an honest old man able to stop drug dealing in his neighborhood, then every old man should have a gun.
My band Sin City ScoundrelsOur song Vixen of Doom
HATE.
Because 2,000 years of "For God so loved the world" doesn't trump 1.2 million years of "Survival of the Fittest."
Imagine this, someone robs you, you pull out your gun to defend yourself, have a shoot out with the criminal and then some old bastard shoots the lot of you.

Ha Ha grandpa riding around on his segway taking out drug dealers with his WW2 rifle. Sounds like a good idea.
So... two people outside make some noise, some old man shoots them and suddenly gun nuts everywhere have a gun party?

An old man protects his property from violent criminals who are enagaged in dealing drugs, trespassing and shooting up a residential neighborhood. I see this as a good thing.

But what if it had been someone shooting in the air as a warning to a man that was raping a woman? The old guy just went outside and shot them assuming they were drug dealers. It could've been Johnny Lawful defending his family for all we know.
By the way, they weren't trespassing, he wasn't protecting his property and he's as violent as them.

These crazy old coots...they'll shoot anything that moves on their property, just like those old McCoy cartoons with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. It's a sad state we're in right now.

But who will protect you from the old men with guns? The police? I think not! We must buy guns to defend ourselves from other people with guns!

Or we could just make laws that prohibit ownership of a gun by any man or woman able to collect social security. Yeah. That'd be much better than turning this into another Guns and their Uses thread.

Too late. Use for guns #135: protecting yourself from old men trying to kill you for your little plastic bag of "medicine".
We really need to get rid of that law that lets people shoot anyone who wanders onto their lawn without written permission. With all the laws out there trying to keep us safe, there should be one that says that wandering onto someone else's property doesn't make it okay for some crazy old man to start lobbing his WW2 grenades at you.

So, basically, killing OAP's.
Besides, a gun isn't meant to protect squat, it's a gun. If you want to protect yourself walk around with a shield and a bulletproof vest. Those are meant for protection. Guns are an assault weapon, they're the ones causing all the shit you're all trying to protect yourselves from.

*sneaks up behind punk_disease and shoots him in the ass*
That's what you get for not buying the bulletproof ass plate you cheap bastard.
C'mon. What's your solution? Outlaw guns? It doesn't work. The only people who would give up the guns are law abiding citizens. You can't disarm criminals with new legislation. The best defense is a good offense. If some crazed lunatic breaks into your house, you should have something to keep him from killing you. You might say that if you have a gun, then he must have a gun, too. Yeah, that's right, but he has a gun either way. This way you have better chance.
But, I'm willing to compromise. I say we pass a new law mandating that every gun come with a shield and bulletproof vest (ass plate sold separately).

I figured they'd be funky fresh bulletproof cargo pants.

Not at all, hunters may hunt all they want. I wanna get the guns away from the psychos and criminals though.

Metal detectors.
You can't disarm criminals with new legislation.
No, but you can keep them from getting more weapons than they already need.
The best defense is a good offense.
If you want to live in a state of constant prarnoia.

Yes, but the whole point of stricter gun laws is to get guns away from psychos like him.

But how will we safely go to the bathroom? :(

It's honestly almost impossible to pass gun control legislation that is strict enough to have a great impact. We all know some moron would complain that it's not fair to the gun owners/hunting community or something stupid to that effect. Sure, there are occasional innocent bystanders who are shot, but usually if one wishes to avoid a bullet up his ass, the easy-to-follow phrase "don't be retarded" works very well. I usually find not walking into a strange person's house to be a good way to keep myself in one piece. Anyone stupid enough (or not a fast enough runner) to get shot by the old guy's WWII rifle probably deserves it. Besides, it helps decrease the "surplus" poplation :)
Let's make things clear, they weren't tresspassing, they were in front of his house. They never shot at the old man, yet he shot to kill. What does that tell you?

Like I said: the elderly should not be allowed to possess firearms. Just as we revoke their license to drive after a certain point, we should revoke their ability to carry a firearm around and blast people who aren't even breaking the law. I used to walk down my street every day back when I was a young'in in Chicago, and the same old man would always spew profanity because I was trespassing on "his sidewalk". Now, if he would have had a gun, there wouldn't be a second thought in my mind as to when he would have used it -- on me.
Holy crap ...imagine the good times that could happen in retirement homes.

That he's a crazy old guy with really bad aim.
Please tell me what kind of gun law would have prevented this old man from shooting at the guys on his lawn. He already had the gun. Perhaps at one time, he was sane enough not to use it to shoot at crack dealers in front of his house. What law could you pass that would protect innocent drug dealers from angry old men? (Outlawing guns in general isn't an option. People wouldn't stand for it.)

That all depends. If you vote for JMHX for President, with running-mate Shrikey, we're going to push for a new bill, the "Elderly Recycle Plan" that provides food to the homeless and people below the poverty line by recycling anyone over the age of 65.

Mandatory administrations of a psychological analysis for anyone over, let's say, 60 who owns a fire arm.

Maybe if the government fucking LEGALIZED drugs, then there wouldn't be the problem of drug dealers "destroying good neighborhoods". Then we wouldn't have insane old men shooting guns at people, and the NRA wouldn't have yet another argument for letting everyone in America be heavily armed.
