Amphetamines.
Until about 1950, they were standard issue to all soldiers in the military. They belived that the temporary mood-elevation and euphoria felt by the soldiers while taking these drugs was a good way to combat depression. It also made the soldiers more gung-ho and willing to put themselves in danger.
It wasn't until the drugs were taken out of the military before they actually discovered 'berzerkers syndrome'.... But that's beside the point.
