Affirmative action is both just and necessary. Blacks and other minorities face all kinds of discrimination in employing, housing, education - you name it. Affirmative action is just a way of leveling the playing field, and even then, whites still have the upper hand.

I expected some flaming in this thread, I mean if this wasn't controversial then the black community wouldn't need their own everything. (And to think we thought segregation was over)

I don't want to turn this into a "which race is more deserving thread" I simply feel that a white history month would be nice. We do not spend the 11 remaining months learning about white history, as stated we learn about history in general. If that was the case Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday would be celebrated in February and people would refer to anything learned in the classroom as the "White perspective" and not "history".

Seriously though, I think every race should deserve their own month to celebrate specific achievements. I chose White History simply because... well I'm white. And the only ignorance in this thread is those that state bias reasons why a White History Month shouldn't exist... That and the KKK picture was a little uncalled for.

Christmas

Please correct me if one of these Holidays seem overly "white" to you, because my "minority" friends and family tend to celebrate them all the same with me.

Any month designated 'white history month' would be a not-so-subtle indoctrination into racism for white children.

My mate recently spent some months in America and he says that blacks are totally different over there though and everyone's really weird about racism

You can never see it the other way, can you? Consider this:

An equally qualified black guy and white guy apply for a job. Chances are, the boss, due to some form of racism, either subconcious are concious, will hire the white guy. What affirmative action does is makes the boss take another look at the applicants - leveling the playing field.

And consider this as well:
Statistically speaking the black guy is more likely to have grown up in poorer housing, with a lousier education, and a history of debt in the family. So he can come to a job interview and seem to be as "equally qualified" as his white counterpart, but chances are that the black guy has had to overcome more obstacles and has therefore accomplished more.

Actually, now that you bring them up, a few of those holidays are a little "overly white," as you put it. Thanksgiving and Christmas to name the obvious ones.

Companies aren't required to hire the white person over the black person. Most affirmative action quotas are only instated if the company has a history of picking the white person over the black person.

And as I mentioned before, the black person has most likely had to overcome more obstacles to become as "equally qualified" for the job as the white person is.

I'd suggest you use some sense. I see no where in that particular post that says "Chinese History". Asians play a huge role in early world history, and still do.

Also, I semi-agree, most media focuses around white men and women, but face it, it's the USA. It was founded by white people, and almost everything worth recognizing has been done by white people. I claim in no way that other races are inferior, but the US is a white based country, and complaining about it is about as smart as complaining that everything in Africa revolves around black people.
