3-Don't know
4-You can get a mouse with 7+ buttons lol. It's called the mighty mouse by apple and you tell the mac which buttons are which and what they do (just type in the thing in a properties thingy)
5-COMPLETLY different. Although if your looking to transfer all of your files, the mac is usually compatible with all of them as long as you have the right program in mac version.
Hope that helps a little :3

Thanks heaps mate.

If you are getting a Mac, get OS X Leopard.
It will be out in late october.

At 10/22/07 05:46 AM, icarus wrote: - Do they run/stay running faster than pc's
There are studies that show that macs generally run faster than PCs because the software and hardware is made by the same people so they integrate well together or something.
I also know from experience that macs age a lot better than PCs. For a PC to age well, it needs hardware upgrades while most macs can stay running for years at a time without any additional or upgraded hardware. The old macs at my school run a whole lot better than the old PCs and people have noticed (both are from around 1998).
- Is it annoying that some programs don't run or is this not really an issue
I've encountered very few PC programs that don't have a mac version or a mac equivalent. Heck, the built in software on a mac (iLife) is better than much of the commercial software out there that accomplish the same task. Only compatibility issue you'll have is for games, and even then the big games all have mac ports.
- Do they have a better ui? Is it annoying having no right click or better?
All mac mouses come with a right click button and often more than that, with full customizability as to what each button does. The UI is amazing and one of the reasons I use my mac a lot. Everything runs so smooth and is much more visually appealing than XP's interface (never used vista).
- Are they really that much different from pc's?
Aside from a few small details, they aren't that different to use. Nearly every PC function has a mac equivalent, and there's plenty of new stuff to discover on a mac. I still discover stuff on mine to this day (Look in the Utilities section of the applications folder, most is just system stuff but there's a few gems like Grapher hidden in there).
I recommend them greatly. If you wait a few days, they'll begin shipping out the macs with the new version of the OS, Leopard (10.5 I think?)

'K.
- Do they run/stay running faster than pc's
Runs as long as I want it to. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I actually shut mine off...
- Is it annoying that some programs don't run or is this not really an issue
It is sort of annoying that they don't read .rar files, but otherwise it isn't as annoying as you might think.
- Do they have a better ui? Is it annoying having no right click or better?
Hold control while clicking for the right click menu on a Mac. Or just get a Mighty Mouse.
- Are they really that much different from pc's?
I don't really have as much of an opinion on this since I've never actually gotten used to a PC, but I think I can safely say that they're quite different.
Overall, if you can afford one then I say go for it.
Thanks!
You're welcome.

The user interface may be better, but it's not worth it. Even if you get a PC, you don't have to use Windows, you could always get another OS. Besides, PC's have more games.

It's all depends, the NEWEST macs are blazing, but so are the newest pcs, and self built pcs can be beasts too, it all depends on your electronic skills :)
- Is it annoying that some programs don't run or is this not really an issue
Only thing i've EVER noticed was annoying was that microsoft office goes mac to windows, but not windows to mac :| ... but besides that, it's all good.
- Do they have a better ui? Is it annoying having no right click or better?
Most macs come with the mighty mouse now, it's optionally wireless and bluetoothed, and always 360 rotation and double clicks ... i'd know, i'm using one
- Are they really that much different from pc's?
No, they're really not, it's just that they ran vista 5 years before it happened, without the suck
Thanks!

Yeh I would wait for leopard if I got one..looks great.
I also wanna ask-
- Mac seems to push the 'People don't write viruses for macs so your safe" point, but surely there are some viruses out there and what happens if you get one? Is there anti virus software or some equivalent?

Well, I've heard here and there that there are a few viruses that a Mac can get, but I've also heard that they're easily taken care of.
I don't know for sure, though.

Macs come out with virus blocking stuff just as fast as windows does, but it just normally doesn't happen, but security updates are, on average, bi-weekly, and i don't exactly read what they do in specific, but it seems pretty obvious
Also, i've Leopard on reserve, i can't fucking WAIT for it to come out :).
I've never gotten a virus and i download off Limewire and such quite often, download from all over the internet, click on weird sites, the normal stuff that usually destroys pc owner's computers (as far as i'm told at least). In fact, the only thing all those hacky sites can do is crash the browser .... and that's it :|

reasons i like my mac:
1- they run faster if you get a new one. the old ones are old.
2- they don't get viruses like windows.
3- they don't freeze up and crash like windows.
4- all the applications are in 1 easy to find folder.
5- it has apps like iMovie and Garageband that help you to make your own movies and music.
6- it comes with games already installed when you get it that you can easily delete if you if you don't want them.
6.5- what good games COME WITH windows? Calculator?
7- on apple.com you can get tons of downloads, like game demos, screensavers, folder icons, ipod downloads, etc.
Reasons i don't like them:
only 2
1- everyone teases you that they suck
2- if you are a hardcore PC gamer, mac doesn't offer you FULL GAMES FROM THE STORES. there are like no games for mac. except i heard that Need For Speed: Pro Street is coming out for mac.
overall, i would say go get one. or if you're hesitent, go to the apple store and try one out. or at least ask them how to use it.

NOOO
DON'T DO IT!
our family computer is a mac, and it constantly reduces me to tears.
while it has many magical functions, runs fast and is generally awesome...
it just doesn't work when you want it to.
it really does make me cry... sometimes.

HAHA. You've got to be KIDDING ME. I use Macs all the time as a Digital arts major. I have never seen a computer crash and freeze up so many times on arbitrary things. Yes, I'm talking about expensive quad-core Mac Pro workstations. It wasn't just one lemon computer -- it's been a lot of them.
I was using Painter on a Mac with a tablet. It was working so horribly. It was changing menus and buttons by itself. It freezed for minutes when I changed windows, and Painter kept crashing. It got so bad that I had to get Painter for my Windows PC to finish my project.
They fucking freeze half the time you do Go->Connect to server. Their interface is childish. You pay a lot extra for a brushed stainless-steel designer casing. The Apple Cinema monitors are huge fucking ripoffs AND are inferior to other monitors on the market!
Any good programs for the Mac are offered on Windows too. Any program that is exclusively for the Mac has an equal or better counterpart on Windows.
After my (Constant) experience with Mac computers, I AM NEVER GOING TO BUY ONE.

RageVI knows not of what he speaks.
I use an OLD (2003) eMac. This is just about as low-end as you can get, besides Mac Mini, which wasn't offered at the time I got this one. This computer, despite its age, freezes at a rate of perhaps once per year, if even that much. And when that occurs, it's usually because I have too many crap files on my relatively small hard drive, that I've never bothered to upgrade.
I may, however, be getting a new computer at some point in the near future, though. You see, the spiffy new OS codenamed OSX 10.5 Leopard is being released in a mere three days. I would advise wait at least that long to buy your Mac, because then the new OS will come pre-installed, and you won't have to buy a new one anytime soon.
If you're seriously in the market for a Mac, you might also consider reading through my Mac thread. Believe me, it's information you'll probably want to know.

By saying this, you say that the dozens of times that high-end Mac computers have frozen and performed badly never happened. My account was one that was personal, and reflects MY experience with their shittiness. You have no place to say my account is invalid -- because it actually happened.
Also, comparing the computers I was using to an older one doesn't help an awful lot. I have an old Apple that worked great. The high-end macs I used were complete shit.
Sorry, but you know not of what you speak ;)
