New game, "The Snowball" 2007-10-20 16:51:03 Reply

Ok Newgrounders I am going to give you all a sneak peak of my new up coming game. It's going to be called "The Snowball". You control a snowball and have to complete 40 levels of traps, spikes, yetis, and more. I have never seen any other game like this.

The Snowball is a platformer game. It has a nice rotating camera that rotates parent to where your snowball is! It adds a nice touch. There will be 4 stage changes, Pure Snow, Murkey Snow, Dirty Snow, and Cavey Snow. The stage changes every 10 levels.

So far for the Demo I am about to let you veiw I have made 5 levels. These levels include Spikes, Yeti's, Spike traps, Cliff traps, Hills, and more. You have to get to the end of each level and touch the portal for the next level.

I would like you to tell me what you think about it. Like how do my Yeti's look, How is the gameplay? Is the rotating Camera a nice touch? How is my Snow Bitmap? Are you looking forward for this new game?

And Lastly do you have any suggestions, like for a new monster. Maybe even a new type of trap? Perhaps a diffrent type of stage change instead of Pure Snow, Murkey Snow, Dirty Snow, and Cavey Snow?

Here is the first 5 levels of the game!

The Snowball Demo

And heres the graphics I drew up so far!

The Snowball Graphics

Thanks!

It's good, but I fell through the level on the hill-trap on level 3, and then the stats started to drift down-wards xP.

Apart from that and the over-used music, I like it :3.

Lol.... Trust me it wouldn't be nearly as fun without the dizzyness...T_T

and to Jindo...

I'm glad you liked it. Do you have any other music suggestions? I was planning on changing the music every stage change. And with the cliff trap, if you go full speed over the edge you will fall off the map if thats what you mean. You have to take it slow. If you noticed too you insta-die if you look at your health when you fall off stage.

I like this game, should be lots of fun when its finished. Maybee you could add something with fire as an enemy, or even water ice capped and you have to avoid falling through. just a thought. o and what about a jump feature. Cant wait.........Dizzying

I couldn't do a jump. I think it will be good without a jump though, don't you? I'm glad you liked it. And the fire is a great Idea. The ice cap seems like a great Idea too... More about it in the NG Alpha section if you want to check it out!

Lol. Does anyone else have any comments on the game? I'm on Level 7 just to let you know. I can do about 5 levels a day MAX before I go crazy with bordom. So probably about an avrage of 2-3 levels a day.

Is there strategy involved? I mean, the whole time I was playing I was just holding down the right button, what's fun about that?

I'm not crazy about the way the snow looks and you definitely need better backgrounds, maybe even a couple of layers of backgrounds that scroll at different speeds. The Yeti is ugly and poorly animated. Get someone to help you with the graphics.

That is my constructive criticism.

Finally someone that's negative! I'll look into have a double scrolling background. You didn't like the snow? And is the Yeti that ugly? I might look into getting a graphic desinger for it, I was NEVER that great with graphics... Actionscript was my thing.

Oh And it seems I forgot to answer you statement "What stragety does this involve?". If you noticed that theres diffrent "Traps" as I called them. Like with the cliff trap you have to take it slow, the spike take it fast, the yeti you have to have timing, ect.

Oh god, the physics of the snowball are so off!

The yeti artwork and portal artwork definately need fixing up, and PLEASE add in jump. All you have to do at the moment is hold down right. Do you know how boring that is? Add in a jump, then you can have things to jump over and what-not.

Your killing me lol... Is the physics that off... I guess I could do a jump... And you don't have to hold right all the time. You have to have timing too...

The snow is passable, but isn't great, the Yeti looks really bad (sorry). I can't judge the actionscript because I don't know enough of it to tell if that game involved a lot of advanced AS or very little, but it seems like you probably worked hard on it despite a couple of glitches.

Yeah, I only got as far as the spike traps so I didn't encounter the other ones. It just seems, to me, to be lacking in some really fun element, something that keeps you hooked and challenges your skill. I think of Aggressive Alpine Skiing when I play this game, about how that game hooked me and I couldn't stop playing it until I beat it (which took me several days).

Good luck on the game, I thought the camera was an interesting and unique touch.

I went through the first 3 levels without taking my finger off the right key. Honestly, that was the most boring thing ever. Now, if I wasn't there assesing the game, I would have stopped half-way through the second level. You really need something to draw in the viewers attention, which this game is lacking.

And yes, the physics are very off.

I'll look into a jump, hopefully that will make it funner to play. There was "somewhat" of a jump before but it made it extremely glitchy. Like when you touched the side wall it shot you straight up. So I might just rewrite the whole script I dunno... I drew the yeti and fully animated in about a 30 minutes or so. I guess I could look at some pictures of yeti's and learn how they look. Thanks for the advice!

... Well on level 3 I held the Right key down and what do you know? I fell off the map. Anyways these are the first 5 levels, there meant to easy. And are you sure the physics are that off? As in so off that it's just no even considered a platformer. Also are you sure your not confusing the physics being off with the rotation of the camera? Thanks for the critisim.
