When you have a team like Man City, you DO NOT finish winless in the CL group stage, it does not matter how difficult the group is. Hell, I think that they should win at least a couple there even if they did not have a manager. Oh, by the way, Mancini never does well in the CL as a manager and always find a way to lose to lesser teams. In other words, he is just not a big stage manager.
In addition, his selection is often awful. Take the Manchester Derby for example, can anyone give me a reasonable explanation why he picked Balotelli over Tevez? Surely Balotelli did well against Man U last season, but it was LAST season. Let's be all honest, Balotelli has been awful this season whereas Tevez has been City's best striker. So anyone with a brain cell should see what the right decision is. Obviously, Mancini realized the mistake and took his love child Balotelli out early in the second half for Tevez, but City were already down 0-2 at that point.
Taking about love child, Mancini is also terrible at controlling the dressing room. Kolo Toure, Dzeko, Milner, Tevez and Kolalov all have/had problems with him, surely City's superstars have a lot of ego, but Mancini's actions and words only make matters worse.
Man City would run away with the league title every season with JoMo or Pep in charge. Hell, any decent manager would have done much better than Roberto "the weak link" Mancini. Mancini is a joke and deserves to be sacked, end of the discussion.

There we go, was that so hard? That is actually a constructive post from which we can actually have a discussion rather than pointless spam.

And as I said, I actually agree with a lot of that. I don't think all of the blame can be on Mancini in Europe- the player's have to take some responsibility, and he certainly was picking strong lineups throughout the competition. His record is poor though, no denying that.

Balotelli is a more difficult issue for me. Clearly Mancini wanted to expose the United weakness from set pieces and needed a tall striker as a threat. Balotelli played that role brilliantly last season and throughout the European Championships. There is also a debate that Aguero and Tevez are similar players and thus shouldn't play together. So starting him wasn't a completely stupid decision, and at least he did the right thing in hauling him off when he realised it wasn't working.

I still maintain that Mancini is a good manager who has had a lot of domestic success in his career. Not everything he does is terrible, and he has certainly done enough right to end City's trophy drought over the last two seasons.

This isn't just an issue I have with your opinions, but with many football fans opinions- too much blame is placed on managers and not enough on players. I could name half a dozen City players who simply aren't trying hard enough or playing well enough currently. Not all of this is Mancini's fault, and these players should be punished appropriately (dock their wages or drop them/sell them...). I teach students just like this, and I can say with confidence that their failure is NOT my fault. I'd be seriously pissed if I was fired because they were lazy shits. So blaming the manager every time a team plays badly isn't right in my opinion.

And thus we have a grown up discussion...

Yes, I knew that the game was cancelled, but I felt doing the prediction here just in case I forget to do so when the game is rescheduled.

That David Luiz is such a fucking monster defending, he's doing a really good job at the final. I'm surprised no one's talking about the club world cup here, but I guess European teams don't really care for it as much as we do.

It just isn't seen as important, mostly because it is widely believed that European leagues are stronger than everywhere else, so it goes without saying that the top European team should win the compeitition easily. Lack of competition = nobody cares. In recent years this has largely been the case, but of course Chelsea are not your average Champions League winner, and have been on a significant decline for a while. I'm not surprised that Corinthians won. Another missed trophy for the blues, who now have a tricky tie at Leeds midweek on the back of all that jet lag.

Leaving Oscar at the bench at the start of the game was a mistake IMO, I'm a Corinthians fan, but I honestly thought Chelsea would control the game, but in the end, it was pretty balanced. Chelsea cared more for this trophy because they needed something to cheer on this year, but yes, from what I've seen, the european champions don't care much for it. I guess because you have to go to the other side of the world in the middle of the season while our season just ended.

Considering there were only 9 games played this week, I think we did very well to match our highest weekly average of the season. Had the Chelsea game been played, we might have even beat the record of 9.0 that I think was our best last season.

Yet another strong score from DoD takes him to joint first, but he can't knock Danny back to second. Sentio is the only player without any perfect scores, so he falls 7 points behind the pace, and (if my calculations are correct) Ejit cuts the gap between Gagsy and him to 9 points.

That's some nice adding, HH. Step it up Sentio.

Some interesting draws in Europe. Looking forward to Utd/Real obviously and Spurs/Lyon and Liverpool/Zenit look suspiciously interesting too. Arsenal look set to continue their impressive record of...reaching the knockout stages.

Newcastle 1 v 1 QPR

Tottenham 1 v 0 Stoke
West Brom 1 v 1 Norwich
West Ham 0 v 0 Everton

Utterly luckless at the moment. I predict a good number of correct results, but not a single perfect score YET AGAIN! That's one in the last 5 weeks now, which is a pathetic turnover. Little wonder I'm falling back fast.

Some interesting draws as you say, though it doesn't bode well for British teams in the Champions League. That looks like none in the quarter finals to me...

Much better chances in the Europa though, as Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool are all perfectly capable of beating anyone in the competition if they play as they can. Newcastle aren't showing good enough form at the moment to include them in that, but the Europa can spring a few surprises. I'd like to see a couple of them go far in the competition, which they should if they give it a real go.

Wigan 1 v 2 Arsenal
Man City 4 v 0 Reading
Newcastle 2 v 1 QPR
Southampton 2 v 2 Sunderland
Tottenham 1 v 0 Stoke
West Brom 0 v 0 Norwich
West Ham 0 v 0 Everton
Liverpool 2 v 1 Fulham
Swansea 1 v 4 Man Utd
Chelsea 3 v 0 Aston Villa

Perfect score.... please?!?!

So who goes into Christmas at the top of the table, I hear you ask? Well, thanks to his never ending hot streak, DoD finally takes the number 1 spot outright. Also, an interesting fact: In the entire history of this prediction league, the person on top at Christmas has gone on to win the league.

Sentio's perfect score drought continues, though this week he isn't the only one, and he manages to outscore Ejit and me. Gagsy is back from the Club World Cup, and though she didn't score as many as Chelsea, she increases the gap on Ejit beneath her.

Merry Christmas everybody, have a nice day! Don't forget to submit predictions for Boxing Day!

I had the feeling that Chelsea would get a big score against Villa. Bottled out of doing 6-0 in case I looked silly. So halfed it. 8 was nicer anyway.

The dogfight at the top continues! Danny moves back to joint first, after doing one point better than DoD this week. Gagsy gains two more points over Ejit, due to his incomplete set of predictions. The highest scorer of the week is me, with an impressive 6. Thanks to my score of 6, I close the gap on Sentio by 6 points, as he didn't submit predictions this week.
