It's a start, but you should try experimenting with different fonts and font colors, that would mesh well with the background. If you have a neutral background, and vibrant font color, it just throws the whole thing off. You need to find a common ground, so to speak, and pick something around there.

well, thats a start. the green text just doesnt come with the mono background in the right way. if you made the green to something black, it might stand out on the whitish-greyish back.

What he ^ said.

Start of with a base colour/gradient, and a render or stock to work with, then blend the stock/render according to the colour of the gradient you choose, make it fade into the background so it dosen't stick out to much, like i didn't do with my sig... -__-'

Then, if needed add a few extra things in, like brushing, scanlines and perhaps a gradient map set to soft light (for a photoshop user) to top it all off.
