I have developed a theory. A theory on why there's so many little teen gangsta's that have actually grown up in nice nieghbourhoods and had a very good life.
It's the fucking parents and schools.
And no I'm not just going to say that they don't know how to disepline there kids. Plenty of people I know have grown up in pretty strict house holds and are still walking around in there suburban thuggery, being little middle class hustlers.
It's the fact that they can't cope with having a child that isn't an allstar. Every where kids go they get praised for every little positive thing they do! "Congradulations jody, You tied you're shoes! Go get your agenda and we'll put a sticker in it!" is what I heard walking through my sisters elementry when I went to pick her up. I mean seriously, teachers aren't critisizing there students cause they're worried it's going to hurt there self-esteem and that it could be unhealthy for them. Well they need it! It's not just schools either, I bet some of you unathletic gamers played atleast some sort of sport when you were younger and I can bet when your team placed outside of the top 3 you still got a medal. Why? Cause apparently when you were younger thinking that you weren't a little Ronoldo is bad for you and reality will just harm you.
But you know what happens when little Sally and Bobby grow up and start realising that they're not these rising stars? They can't handle it! They were raised thinking that they're little worldbeaters and are just these great child progidies and then they get older and have to start coming to terms with the fact that they're about to fail math or that they didn't make the schools basketball team and it's incredibly dificult for them. This leads them to get stressed out, then that stress and frustration leads to them ignoring there parents or teachers or anyone they should listen to. Think about it, how many times did you come home from a bad day at school where you failed a test or something and acted like complete pricks to your parents? And yes not all of you are little gangsters but those kids that either really took all that positive praise to heart or just can't deal with frustration very well have a much higher chance of starting to do shit like drugs, like going around and being dicks just for the sake of it.
Back in the days when your parents grew up there were no little gold stars for cutting striaht down the line with a pair of siccors or fuzzy stickers in your agenda for doing something that you were assigned to do. And guess what?
I can garuntee there were hardly any little suburban punks causing shit for the sake of it.

You really want to know what'll knock a kid on his ass?
Applying to college.
I tell ya, it's a real wake up call to see yourself stacked up against the rest of the country. Really humbling and distressing at the same time...
Still, mommy says I'm smart.

I never got a star for tying my shoes. Now I want one.

I haven't gotten the superstar treatment and guess what? Most of my teachers gave up on me, ignored me, or criticized rather than taking an extra five minutes to help me. Now I'm constantly scared shitless of failing and I won't ask for help for fear of being criticized. Yeah telling kids they fail at life really helps, really!
The problem is the fact that they're over doing it. A sticker for tying up a shoe? What kind of school did you go to?

Not really, especially if you get into a good school with little problems. Classes are harder and you're on your own...whoop de doo
Still, mommy says I'm smart.
She did tell me that, and she was right.

A normal public school.
I'm not saying call kids stupid or something, just don't make them feeling like little einstiens for getting a question right on a test.

These words have been said by thousands of people around the country, and guess what? Nothing's going to change.
Parent's are too afraid to mess up their kids, so they'll go along with the system. And, right now, that system is spoiling your kid. My cousin recently attacked her parents with a pair of scissors for having to come in the house and do chores when she was talking to her friends. Her friends were also still there when it happened!
An elementary school in Minnesota stopped marking their papers wrong when they got a wrong answer. The reason is because the parents revolted and complained that their children were coming home crying to them with a bad paper. This immediately made me puke in disgust.
My parents never gave me the superstar treatment, and now I blame my problems mostly with myself, not on my parents, upbringing, school, economy, 9/11, etc. (Yes, I know someone who blames their problems on 9/11. It's probably because he ran out of excuses.)

Now, their are some things that kids need to be yelled at for, but praising them doesn't turn them into "thugs and gangsters".
Basically, no matter how much you praise or hit your kid, they will never respect you untill they leave the rebel stage.
If you are strict to your kids = You will either install fear or hatred into them, if you install feat into them it will take much longer for them to rebel, but they will still find a way to do it.
If you praise your kids = They ususally don't turn into thugs, they usually just do bad things and think that they'll get away with it, because you treated them so good as a child, but then you have a chance with them doing good things now all the time because they hope that they will be praised for it.
Really, it is all a chance thing, no matter what you do, you may or may not let your kids succeed.

My parents keep me from getting spoiled. But I see what you mean.
There is a little kid that used to ride on my bus when I was in elementary. When we waited in the school gym for our bus (we had to sit on the floor and wait, no standing, no moving) he would get up, run around giggling and screaming and hitting people with his various things. When we got on the bus he would stand up backwards and jump, yell, and cry all the way to his house. Every time he got repremanded at all, he would burst out in a fit. I couldn't stand it. I was a safety patrol on the bus (we had to keep people in their seats, make them obey rules etc...) and most days I had to hold him so that he wouldn't stand up and scream!

I agree with Gawdz...
surely, if you mistreat your child severly, its gonna affect them...but if you never discipline them, it may be worse.
And mostly EVERY kid goes through some rebel stage

You could say nothing. It's not that crazy to just let a kid do something without feedback.
