Hello and welcome to my first-ever thread!!!
The theme here is to make designs for banners to put them in the front of that ill-reputation clubs, motels, pubs, massage parlors, exotic dance shows... etc, etc.
Are you up to the challenge? Do you have the legal age? Your parents aren´t watching? Good! In that case, let me give some words of advice about your soon-to-be masterpieces of the raunchy kind...

* Inspirations comes from real-life! Pimp out your local motel banner! If you do so, add some background to the post, but refrain from giving directions or adresses. We don´t want to make publicity of such places...
* Make it show some artwork. Text-only based banners are little use here (Unless you´re a master of lettering).
* Nudity is sure to be shown here, but use it in an arty or subtle way. An scandalous banner is sure to be retired by the mayor, and besides, not everybody is able to handle penis and vaginas properly...(unless you´re Stamper.)
* No photoshopping. I mean, do not post altered or retouched photos. (unless you´re retarded and you aren´t been able to understand a simple sentence...)
* Make them sexy! (unless you want me to kill you.)

Understood? Well, if so, then it´s my turn to make an example!
But my first post is going to be an exception. I´ve asked permission to an admin (Thanks MindChamber!) to post a photo here, in the first post. Hey, don´t flame me yet. you will understand it in the second post...

This is the banner of the Nevada Club located in a town near the city of León. I see this banner every day from the bus when I go to give private english classes to my kid students... C´mon, have a look at it. It´s rather ugly, isn´t it? But it´s so kinky that I´ve fallen in love with it... I assure you that that town doesn´t look at all to the far west or even an north-american town... I don´t know in what was really thinking the owner... Is Nevada famous for its whores or something? Never heard of such thing... Maybe he wanted something to give it a Las Vegas-like look... kinda.
The photo is not very good quality, but I had to take it from the other side of a wide road, because the banner is located at a first floor level. I couldn´t make a second one ´cause a scary-looking guy who parked in front of the club started to look at me in a suspicious way... I thought it was better to live for fighting another day. And then, the bus ran off in front of me, so I had to wait 40 minutes for the next one...

And here is the real thing.
My first idea was to make two different pics, one was going to be a neon-banner and the other one a light-up banner. But it was giving me too much work, so I ended up merging the two ideas together.
The light-up was all drawn in CorelDRAW, but it was edited in Photoshop and ImageReady for the glowing neon effect.
All comments, suggestions and critics will be welcome... the shadow that´s projected under the neon tube when it´s turned off gives it a realistic look, but.. If the banner under it it´s supposed to give light too... How can be a shadow be projected? Well, let´s say it´s a very dim light... or not?

This is being posted as a sort of "Making-Of".
The picture in the left is a rough sketch I made from the original photo to give me an overall idea of the picture. The one in the right is kind of a "character design" I made for the Nevada Cowgirl in the Bizarro style. In the center, you can see the sketch I used to make the final picture. If you compare it to the finished picture, you can see that I had to made some changes in the details, due to the ultra-thick outline I´ve used. The situaition of head and limbs also were moved to fit the figure into a better composition.

Weell... The first picture post has been made by DarkBloodySoul, so she deserves some comments for her art!
Is it a sexy picture for a business? Then of course that it fits here! But it´s a pity that it´s only a sketch, I´d preferred to see the finished art. Only a figure can be seen, we can´t see the shape of the banner or where is the name of the business placed.
It´s a nice drawing anyway. But it´s difficult to imagine the whole figure fitting on a banner. I liked the detail of the hands tied at her back, so I suggest you focus the attention on that feature. You have to see it better. Should you need any help for something else regarding this picture, just ask for it, and I´ll try to give you a helping hand (If I can...)
But, you know, as you´ve made the first picture post (not made for me, I mean.)... You have deserved a prize!!! I had a look at you user page and you have inspired me to do the following banner.
Yeah, the name was inspired by that famous underwear company...
I tried to make it as fast as I could, but don´t any of you feel restrained to post your comments on it for that! Praise it or flame it, as you fancy to!

And well, here´s another original. It turned out to come out really quick, so I´m hoping to post here more often from now on. Well the figure was drawn quick and smoothly, but the design suffered from many changes (At first, the text were vertical/horizontal mixed). Anyway, I´m not too satisfied with the blinking "N" (It didn´t turned out as well as I expected) and the colors of the frame need some retouching, but I marked the deadline for today, and I can´t afford to take all the time in the world with one picture. Learn from your errors and move on to the next one. You can´t improve if you don´t move.
Ah two things before leaving: 1-This is NOT my personal art thread, so if you come up with something good, post it right here. 2-The first three pictures turned out to be animated GIFs, but this is not mandatory, just take some effort and make a nice sexy pic!.

Or at least I´ll try to... I don´t have free access to an scanner anymore so I have to go to a friend´s house in oreder to scan my pictures... And it happened to be really hard to meet him, because we both have been quite busy and we couldn´t arragnge a proper meeting until last week. But as you can see, my first priority is this thread, so I´ll try hard to make it grow bigger and better.

(Shojo Manga by Mihona Fujii about three teenage hoes or whatever... I´ve read it all the 10 or so volumes so I know what I´m talking about. Kinda.) logo... You rock. Honestly.

You were really discussing with Dookie about the quality compression!? I got kinda shocked because I don´t really think I do anything special with it... Photoshop does all the work. But each time I pass more time in Imageworks tweaking the quality to get some extra frames, so I´m learning about it. I remember Dook had a bad experience with an animated gif, so that´s why he seems so interested on that.

Well, as I told before, it was ImageReady, which is the tool that comes with... Photoshop.

Today, I´ve been taking photos a future banner. I made some test photos of the surroundings, and I took a picture of this hairdresser´s window (No whores here, I think, sorry.). Take a look at it...

It´s like fetusdoctor´s, only without rainbows!!!

Well, once again I had to ditch another picture. It´s the second one... At this rate, I´ll have to add the "Gallery of the Rejected" to my upcoming "Gallery of Failures"... It was a good idea, but I feel the picture was not really going as well as expected, so I´ll redo it with a different picture. Sorry for the delay.

Meanwhile... I had to go on to my next picture. This time it´s based in another real-life sign, the "Dani´s Show", located near the city centre of León. I´ve only been able to watch it by day, so I don´t really know what it´ll look like turned on. I know that there´s a tree covering part of it in the photo, but believe me, you´re not missing anything. Don´t you think the white background is sort of n00bish?
When I made the preliminary sketch, I found very interesting the way how the tubes are twisted and displayed to form the shape of the girl... some of them are cleverly designed... while others really don´t make sense. Have a look. I liked the detail of the strand of hair covering the nipple, it´s a pity I had to ditch it from the final design...
Note the bilingual little sign. I´ve only seen those in touristical coast cities... This leaves no doubt about the sort of place this is.
But the one next to it... "Ben-Hur"... Judah Ben-Hur?! WTF?! That doesn´t sound straight to me... Maybe the local is under new management and they decided to run it in a "different" way...? If so, they´ll have to change the neon board...

And here it is, the final product.
This time is a neon-only banner, no light-ups. As I said in the previous post, I found really interesting the way shapes are displayed with tubes in this one, so I decided to go in that direction.
Before going to the Photoshop stage, I decided to have a look at some tutorials about making the tubes to try to improve and fix my technique... I realized that most of them made the thing very similar to the way I was already making it... But it was not for nothing, I learned some things about actual tube design that I have applied to this submission.
Well, with all this in mind I tried to use a different and simplier method of making the tubes and I´m going to tell you about it. Like a sort of mini-tut...

- The tubes have been drawn on a vector-based program. Two hints about it: Make the lines thick and set the endings of the lines and the corners to Round (I forgot to make the corners round in the Original Inn, and look at it. I didn´t notice until I uploaded... I got really angry.)
The tubes also have a start and an end to them. So, if you make close shapes like circles or squares, break them with a small gap.
Also, the tubes can be quite long, but they seem to be not very short... Try to get the most of each tube.

- Now for the main part... Import the tube traces to Photoshop. Make sure there´s no background in the same layer of the tubes. Now, with the layer selected, go to Layers>Layer Styles>Bevel and Emboss.
If Inner Bevel doesn´t appear by default, set to it now. In the Shadow box, change the angle to 90º (I use 45 of Height, but try it as you like.) Change the opacity of Highlight and Shadow to 15%.
- It´s time to separate the tubes in different layers according to two criteria: Time and Color. Different color, different layer. If there are tubes of the same color but they turn on/off at a different time, you´ll have to separate them in different layers, but in this case, you can do it after making the on/off states.
- Now we have the tubes ready to turn them on. I you´re going to make animated blinking lights, you´ll have to duplicate the layers of that tubes in order to make the two states of them.If not just go on with the "On" state.
Go to the Layer Styles box (On the Layer tab or clicking twice in a previous Layer Effect on the Layer window) and enter the following settings:

>For the "On" State:
- Inner Glow: White
- Outer Glow: Similar color to the tube. I use the web-safe palette and choose a slightly brighter tone.
- Bevel and Emboss: Don´t change anything.

>For the "Off" State:
- Bevel and Emboss: Change the Shadow Opacity to 75%
- Color Overlay (Under Bevel and Emboss and Satin.): Black color. Opacity set to 55%... I change the Fusion mode to Darken, but I don´t really see much difference from Normal... Just in case.
- Parallel Shadow: If the angle by default is not the same as the one you used in Bevel and Emboss (90%) set it like that.

Well, if you don´t use animations, it´s over... If you do, just go to Imageready and make frames, switching the visibility of the "on/off" layers of the tubes you want to blink... I think 0,5 seconds is allright for a neon blink.
About optimizing... I suggest you to reduce the size of the image. Don´t make too many frames,beware with using tubes of many different colors (they are gradients, so they will use up many colors of your palette. I´ve used 7 this time, so I´m afraid it´ll look like crap.) Try to use 128 colors instead of 256 if you´re still exceeding the filesize, and if all that fails, use the Loss tab in the Optimize window (If you have to set it over 10, i´d suggest you to make major changes in your design or try harder in my other advices...)
Try to get the image as smooth as possible because when uploading, the quality will surely drop if it wasn´t very high.

Well, it´s over... These words are not carved in stone, experiment and make comments if you find something interesting (In last minute I decided to include an extra black layer with the opacity to 35% to darken the board and the tubes.). As my Photoshop is in Spanish, some terms may differ, correct them if you find something. I´m using layer styles only to keep it easy and simple, but I used Gaussian Blur before for making bigger, controlled halos and things like that. I´ve made this to encourage you to use it and post some more pictures here (Although there´s not necessary to use neon in your banners... my latest didn´t have any of them.)

Yeah, It appears like the neon tube is malfunctioning. Try a slower pace next time.
One more thing... What kind of place is it supposed to be placed on? Looks like some sort of music store. Unless you´ve got an unhealthy fetish desire for electric guitars, the sexy element is missing. Next time, remember that we´re going for that "Red Lights" district look.
The tubes seem nicely drawn, though. You should´ve commented on how you made it.

Ok... Now, let´s talk about this pic. Originally, it was called "Cheeky Chicks", that´s why her buttocks are so round and prominent. The idea was to animate a hand spanking her or something like that... but the display design really gave a hard time. Why? Because it didn´t come out at first, so I had to make many sketches and, in the end, I only drew the girl figure on the rough. So I had to improvise on the screen... I made this shading that gave her a pinky look to her skin, and that´s how the design took shape at last. Thank God I´m quite satisfied with the result, after all... but I´d have liked a little more contrast between the on/off states of the animation. But I want to finish it now, and start another. I have to try and produce them in a more regular pace.

Hmm personaly it's your worst one, to many sexual refrences. E.g the penis shaped "18's" and the jap eye @ the end of enter. They don't need to be there.

Well, Look what that guy Dudo has done.I´ve been busy working with Digital Painting Tutorials (with no success, by the moment. I´m afraid I´m really dumb when it comes to PhotoShop. Oh, well.) and that guy goes by and bumps this thread. Attracting some comments demanding attention. Forcing me to make another lightboard ASAP. Oh, well; I needed a break from bitmap, anyway.
The truth is that I´ve been on a sort of a creative crisis lately. I had good ideas, but my drawings came out as crap. It happens to me from time to time... Now that I know there are people expecting me to do something good, I hope to overcome that eventually.

To Nacco and PrinceFlea... Ha,ha... Except when stated otherwise (look the photos), I just made them up. Here´s a tip: In most of them I start using a pun for the name. A bad, dirty pun, even better. That suggests me an image and that´s how the thing starts. Although sometimes it´s the other way round...
