Look, you don't live here, so you don't understand. Guns are a way of life around here, esp. in Michigan. That's how it goes.

Guns are a big part of America, one of my teachers lived in a state with a very small number of guns in it. The crime rate was huge there apparently. As soon as the gun rate increased, the crime rate dropped. I'm not saying I'm all for guns, but some cases make a lot of sense to me.

Exactly, the gun culture.
Look, I don't care if you ride around on a horse and hunt foxes but if you're opposed to people dieing then I don't see why you're opposed to stricter gun laws. It would keep guns away from criminals and anyone who's mentally unbalanced. Gun culture created timothy McVeigh and resulted in the death in hundreds of men women and children.

Allow me to do the next best thing to a drawing, as well.
You are awoken in the night by the noise of wood splintering and men cursing. It is after midnight, dark, and you have no idea what has just happened. Fearing the worst, you grab the .357 you keep in your dresser and wait. Then the door of your room is broken down, and 2 men come in. You hope that they will not notice you, but they do, and, thinking that you are sleeping, turn and proceed to rummage through your things while plotting to kill you or not.
The robbers both turn around quickly when they hear a hammer clicking in the night, but cannot react before they are both shot by you.
Unfortunatley, this acually happened to me. I once had a gun only because I lived in a bad neighborhood. I now have many both for the protection of myself and the preservation of history.
If everyone was a carebear like you, Criminals would be free to rape and murder without fear of retribution. Because the criminals would still have guns, Only this time you wouldn't.
Well here's a thought, let's keep guns away from criminals, psychopaths and sociopaths. Do we at least agree on that?

Dude, how thin are your doors? It takes more than one shot of an axe to break down a door.

I can agree with that.
There is still the black market, but that can never be eliminated.

there is absolutely no way to do that. if we outlaw all guns, then the criminals and psycopaths would buy them from the huge black market that would spring up as a result. if all guns in the world were destroyed, they would use knives, axes, or other improvised weapons to murder, rape, pillage, etc. i would rather take the risk of allowing people to legally own guns to defend themselves than live in a country where I was at the mercy of criminals with no way to defend myself.

It took a guy who was about 6'8 or so and looked to weigh a good 200 pounds 3 or 4 rams at the door with his shoulder to break it.

It doesn't matter how thick your door is. What matters is what the bolt lock on the door nob is inside. When you close your door most of them go into a piece of drywall, molding, and sometimes a 2x4. When you break in a door you kick right next to the door nob. But once again thats most residential homes not all of them. And not all burglars enter homes forcibly.

I will tell you why guns are here people. Because we have evolved and we are the supreme species on the planet. And swords are no longer a neccesity!!!
Except for microbes. They are superior because they have no predator and they survive that giant meteor thingy in the dinosaur times!

Too true too true. I live in Holland. The best thing to protect yourself here from being mugged etc is a giant rolled up piece of paper with a lot of hash in it.

nope, can't say I have, but I would if it came down to it. if anyone ever tried to hurt me, my family, or my hypothetical children, may god help them. i am not a woman to be victimized. i also have not shot a deer in my residential area because that is against the law and i am a law abiding citizen and plus it would really piss off my neighbors. and yes we did build a huge fence, but no dice, they still got at it. bastards. lol.

It's phallic. And grow up.
We need to get guns out of the hands of the criminals. Any suggestions about how to do that or should criminals and psychos also enjoy the 2nd amendment?

moses almighty have you not read anything i have posted in this topic????!?!? you are NEVER going to get guns out of the hands of criminals and psychos, there will always be the black market.. and even if there were no guns they would find other weapons to use. if a criminal or a psycho really want to kill, they are going to no matter what kind of laws or restrictions you place on them!

We already have laws to that effect. Guns require background checks and waiting periods, they can't be sold to convicted criminals, etc.

The black market which is created by the over-production of guns due to non-existant gun laws. The only reasons that guns get into the black market is that too many guns are built.
and even if there were no guns they would find other weapons to use.
Such as what, a knife? I can run away from a knife. I can't run away from a fired bullet.
if a criminal or a psycho really want to kill, they are going to no matter what kind of laws or restrictions you place on them!
ok, but why make it easier for them?

Yes but they're applied in only 18 states. How many times must I link to the same post?

States should have a more common set of gun laws so the system can't be exploited, e.g. buying guns in one state and smuggling into another (this is purely hypothetical).

How crime ridden is it possible for a country to be that everyone feels the need to carry guns?

And one might wonder what causes a violent society.

Oh, that's easy, lack of respect for other human beings, seeing them as numbers, animals, or things. Much like corporate culture teaches us to think of others. Criminals think,"There are lots of old ladies. They are of no value to me. But they own things of value. Let's get rid of something with no value in exchange for something of value." You see, in order to hurt, kill, maim, threaten, etc., there must be a certain lack of value for strangers.
Basically, criminals think everyone else sucks, and deserves to die. Of course, people who are idiots don't help this thought pattern. We need to increase exposure of valuable humans with honorable goals to criminals, instead of concentrating criminals in prisons. We need to realize there IS such a thing as a hardened criminal, and individual whose very existence helps to negate the idea of the value of ALL human beings.
In simpler terms: Exile and reeducation for "salvagable" criminals, death for hardened criminals. Better examples of human behavior for children.

i used to be so much more liberal until i actually tok a geopolitics class and then about a year later started posting on ng.. that got rid of my idealism pretty quickly.

whoa, there's a big difference between war and murder. War is government sanctioned. Youre killing armed soldiers, who are trying to kill you. In war, it's kill or be killed. If youre killing civilians, even if youre in military uniform, it's still a crime, only on an international level. Violence has it's place in society, and that place is in retribution of wrongdoing, and in defense of the homeland.

War is murder on a big scale. *Restrains from using word 'oil'*
