But part of the reason that it is unpopular in public opinion is that it's harmful.
Part, mind you.

i had been smoking weed for quite some time and just recently stopped and i found over the four months since iv quit that i have very few instances of cravings proving (to me at least) that the point made earlier that weed is just good not addictive is true.
although i have also had alot of short term memory loss (although it could be because i'm very disorganized) but i dont think weed should be legalized because that would further impair efforts to make ciggaretts illeagle and although i have nothing against ciggarett smokers i hate ciggaretts wich are extremly addictive i was smoking ciggaretts for about 2 years and went through hell to quit and i definatley dont think that they should be legal.

You people are coming to some pretty illogical conclusions. I smoked crack for quite some time, and I quit that cold turkey without any problems...does that mean crack isnt addictive? Its a relative issue, and it comes down to wheather or not the person has an addictive personality. This doesnt mean that the people are the ones with the addictive trait; vs. drugs being so. Some people have no trouble using drugs and quitting when they choose to. They are addictive, and personal stories dont prove otherwise very well at all.

u make a good point and i'd be hard pressed to argue against it yes i agree that in many cases having an addictive personality does become a factor but i beleive in many cases it also depends on whether the drug u are useing is addictive enough to change u so u begin to have an addictive personality wich is where i think the whole weed being a gateway drug arguement comes from.

Okay. The whole 'marijuana is/isn't addictive' argument shouldn't be an argument at all. The fact is, there's two types of addiction: physical and psychological. Physically, marijuana is not addictive. If you smoke a lot of weed, then suddenly stop, there are no withdrawal symptoms, there's no jitters, shakes, cold sweats, hot flashes, anything. Anything physically addictive will cause those things, if used enough. Cigarettes, alcohol, any narcotic, barbituate...all that stuff will cause withdrawal symptoms if there's an addiction.

Marijuana IS psychologically addictive, especially for people who have ADHD. It slows them down enough to be functional, I've seen it happen. Nirvana made the best point here. Marijuana should be used for recreational purposes only (the only exception, of course, is medicinal). Once it becomes something that's done every day, all day, blah blah blah...it's time to stop. That's likely a psychological addiction, but not a physical one.

Psychological addictions don't necessarily require medical attention. Just a lot of willpower. Physical addictions (and withdrawals) can be fatal.

Whether or not marijuana should be legalized shouldn't rest on the addictability of it. Alcohol and cigarettes are a prime example of legal addictive substances. My argument for legalization?

Money. Plain and simple. The government spends billions of dollars on a War on Drugs that will never be successful without tearing the Constitution to pieces. The government could MAKE money on legalizing marijuana. Taxes, age requirements, all of that...it would start to take it out of he hands of children. The money troubles that many states are having now would be eased a bit, and ...well, this is something that can't be proven, but how many people here (over 21) drank more before it was legal for them to do so?

I did.

It was the thrill of doing something that was 'illegal' that was part of the fun. Take that away, and more than a few people would cut back. This is a guess, but it's also simple logic.

There's alot of other things about the marijuan plant that are useful. It's a huge renewable resource that can be used to make clothing, paper, common necessities like shampoo, chapstick, lotion, food, et cetera. Think about it. PAPER. People are always screaming about recycling and saving the trees, when hemp paper is stronger and easier to grow.

Anyway, I'm done psychobabbling. :D

*DAG light is ON*
Question to BWS: If the reason why some people can quit and some people cant is a personality difference, are addictive personalities defective? What if therapy can change an addictive personality for the better? HOW DO WE KNOW if a personality is addictive? Wouldn't drug and alcohol usage be a good indicator of this defect, and in the end BE HELPFUL to people with addictive personalities?

Of course this is a major victory to the fellow potheads!

Next the Crack addicts will say crack is harmless and get some trumped-up findings to support it....

The best thing is to not have to know that a person has an addictive personality. If the person never takes drugs, drinks, smokes, etc, it will never be an issue.

That probably won't happen. I have enver seen a person yet that is over 15 that hasn't drinked or smoked. It is easy to access (most of time) and peer preasure and media help. Marajuana is escpecially favorite among the media. All the "cool" rappers and stars do Mary Jane. That is what i got started. Couse, Snoop Dogg told me to.
